We Reminisce: Jordan’s 43 At 40

When I saw that today was Michael Jordan‘s 46th birthday, there were a multitude of clips that I wanted to post. But when I thought about it, there was really one that stood out among the rest: MJ’s 43 points at 40-years-old.

Four days after droppin’ 40 on his 40th birthday, MJ scored 43 points in 43 minutes (including the game-winning layup), as the Wizards beat the Nets in front of a sold out MCI Center crowd. Becoming the first 40-year-old in NBA history to score 40 or more, MJ was unstoppable, making 18-of-30 shots and 7-of-8 free throws to go along with 10 rebounds and four steals. It was Jordan’s 173rd 40-point game. Happy Birthday Mike!

he should of stayed retired after the “push off” in 98… Those are the moments I will be telling my kids about… Not when he came back as a former shell of himself. Good game though

People who talk shit about Mike’s wiz days can fuck off…I got to watch Mike drop 51 at age 38 in person, and for me the entire comeback was worth that one night. While it hurt not to see Mike just fuckin dominate, it was cool to see him consistently drop buckets without the athleticism…Just the jumper, the will power, the mind and the moves that he developed with 20 years of work.

  • that’s whats up

what about Ewing scoring 43 all season when he played for the Sonics?

  • Bermuda Boy

    Who’s with me…

For one Season: MJ @ 40 over Kobe @ 30

    Happy Birthday G.O.A.T.

  • karizmatic

I think people forget how nice he still was with the Wiz, 43 at the age of 40 is amazing.

    Happy Birthday to MJ.

  • SWAT

    @bermuda boy…i’ll fox wit ya.

  • http://nike.jp/basketball/bg/home.html asmaticasiatic

Alot of peeps forget that along with being 40, Michael battled injuries that entire time wit the wiz; from numerous knee issues to a broken rib courtesy of Ron Artest during the summer b4 his second year,so he really wasn’t at full strength during that entire run…Only knock I have on Mike is how he’s trying to keep America in recession by selling his broke 2009 kicks for $190 plus tax, horrible…… The consumers have to pass up those joints and send jb a message…

  • http://nike.jp/basketball/bg/home.html asmaticasiatic

On that note, Mike needs to lower the price of his fantasy camp too…..

  • CLUTCH

Mike at 40 could dominate on any given night, he just couldn’t do it night after night after night for 82 games anymore. Still if you had mike during that season play just one game he still would be the best player on the court. That might still apply actually.

  • Rafa23

the broken rib he suffered from artest was before the comeback.

  • akash

lol at richard jefferson tryin to fake contact at 0:09 seconds of that video, what a loser

  • doc

Mike stunk 4 out of 5 games that year.

  • MoxWestCoastRep

@ Bermuda Boy- Lemme get some of that ish your smokin dogg
MJ is the GOAT tho. Happy Birthday 23

  • Bermuda Boy

@ MoxWestCoastRep, yes mate, we got that good ish down here blood but check this:

Led by MJ @ 40, fully healthy, fully fit, playing one game, on the big stage (let’s say MSG for shtz in giggles)and it’s for all the marbles, pride, pain, love, it all comes down to this, balls to the wall, his 6 rings for ya boyz 3 rings, against an exact equally talented team led by Kobe @ 30…and tell me you don’t have SERIOUS cause for pause before putting down this month’s paycheck as bet your bro.

  • fallinup

look, I love MJ. He’s the reason why I love basketball so much. It was an honor to watch him play….but your off of your rocker if you think MJ @ 40 is even comparable to Kobe @ 30….LOL hilarious some folks on here are.

  • fallinup

    And happy BDay, MJ!

  • http://www.dimemag.com Aron Phillips

One play, right now, who do you take. Real age, real talk.

  • fallinup

    @ Aron

    TimmyD

Was really torn by Kobe. But you can’t knock Tim’s consistency.

  • MoxWestCoastRep

@ Bermuda. Ill take Kobe. No question. If they were the same age even mike at 35 probably MJ. But at 40 he just didn’t have the legs that Kobe has.

  • K Dizzle

OHH! And Randolph with the right cross!!!

  • Bermuda Boy

    @ #14 and #16,

    Real talk?

I was high, ha ha ha hiiiigh when I wrote that man!

Seriously though, did want to stoke some debate, well, at least put a devil’s advocate position out there…MJ 40 v Kobe 30 miiiiighta been a stretch but point was G.O.A.T (somewhat) past his prime, i’d take over 2nd Best Shooting guard off all time anyday, allday.

So, my question is (if this makes any sense whatsoever)…at what age then, did MJ (comparably) equal/stop being being being better than Kobe?

  • K Dizzle

    sorry, left cross…

and yeah, Kobe all day, stop playin

  • K Dizzle

and mike stopped bein better than Kobe right after he slapped Russell’s ass for the chip

  • floRida_evans

hold up(waaiit). Are you seriously suggesting that Mike isn’t STILL better than (candy)Mamba?actually you can’t use his age as a marker,he skipped years due to retirement, came back for two,and was off and on effective…

  • hooper5013

DWIGHT HOWARD must low key hate Emeka Okafor.

    45 and 20 boards tonight….WOW!!!!!

  • K Dizzle

Nash to Amundson is ridic. Phoenix doin all kinds of dirty to the clips. 73 first half points and still 2 mins left…dirty

  • no j mayo

Much as I love Mike, Kobe fucked Mike in his mouth when he was 40 that year and Kobe was like 25…stuck like 40 in the first half with 7 threes or some retarded shit. Youtube it. Prolly would gave his old ass 70 but the busted ass Wiz with Chris Whitney and Popeye Jones got dusted. It was a laugher by halftime. Godamn it’s hard to believe Popeye and Whitney were allowed to start on the same squad. Neither of those guys in their best day could get burn on today’s Thunder or Grizz.

Should have paid homage in today smack NOT AFTER watching NBA coast to coast on ESPN2. Or learning after 12 hours into the day!

TRACY MCGRADY DONE FOR SEASON WITH MICROFRACTURE SURGERY.

I think this is good. Now it’s resolved. Bottom line is dude won’t be there and they still have a great 3 with Von, Ron and Yao.

Jacked up thing will be if they get past first round and Tracy is not there for it LOL. Tracy might just quit the game on some ish like that lol.

Anyway what’s done is done, I hope Tracy gets better and now get ready for the Rockets to roll!

  • fallinup

With the age on his motor, and the surgery….man. It wasn’t long ago when this guy was regarded in the same breath as Kobe. And now, I’m just hoping he makes it back and at least is half that player that he was when he does return.

Take all the time in the world Tracy. Even if you don’t come back next season either.

  • Zhess

Damn akash, I was about to mention the Richard Jefferson flop of the century! I played that part back 5 or 6 times too see why he faked getting hit in the head. I guess when someone like MJ gets to the hole and you can’t stop him, you gotta start faking injuries and offensive fouls. Pathetic.

  • http://www.luckylester.com Bryan

What a will to witness – nothing like it since.

37 minutes a game, 20 points on 45% FG, 6 boards, 4 assists, 1.5 steals, at 40…. Come on, the clown that says he was garbage 4 out of 5 is a doctor in dumb…

  • http://www.myspace.com/lilpenny23 JHov

The greatest ever..no doubt!! The reason why I love basketball! Happy B-day G.O.A.T

  • Dragonyeuw

At Bermuda boy- Firstly I’m from Bermy too bruh, nice to see a fella onion on here haha. Second to answer your question, I would equal Kobe @ 30 with Jordan @ 35,the last year of his 6 championships. In that comparison,Kobe has the athletic edge but MJ has the experience factor but enough athleticism to match up. In that matchup, I think they’d cancel each other. Mike at 40 can’t hang with Kobe now, that’s just due to mother nature taking it’s toll. Mike wouldn’t have the lateral quickness to either get around Kobe that much,or keep Kobe in front of him. He’d have to take jumpers all day,and if he was off, Kobe has the big edge there. Still though, Mike was one of the best players at 40, not night in night out dominant, but still an all-star.

At No J Mayo, Kobe was guarded very little by MJ the game he went off for 42 in a half,55 overall. Most of the abuse that night was directed at Jerry Stackhouse.

  • Dragonyeuw

Speaking on Tmac, how sad to see this guy the way he is now. The prime years of his career being offset by injuries. We won’t ever know how good he could have been because injuries stunted his overall growth as a player. He was never better overall than Kobe, but it was a relevant debate 6 years ago.

  • T

All ya dumb that keep saying Kobe better than Jordan. Nobody better than Jordan. Kobe not even best in the league now, that would be Dwade. All this talk about Kobe being so good, we saw just how good he was in last year’s final. Stop riding the man’s jock. I don’t care how much points he avgs in the regular season or none of that, once it was time to win a championship he got bitched by the Celtics. The year before same thing happened to Lebron, and the year before that Dwade dominated.

  • Dragonyeuw

No-one is saying Kobe is better than a prime Jordan. But you’re a fool if you think 40 year old Jordan is better than 30 year old Kobe. That’s just ignorant thinking. Yeah Kobe came up short against the Celtics last year, but saying D-wade dominated the Mavs 3 years ago to make a point is faulty logic. The 2006 Mavs aren’t the 2008 Celtics, especially defensively. Would Dwade have done any better against the Celtics last year in the same position? Lebron got punked by the Spurs in 2007 because they were smart enough, and good enough defensively, to make Lebron into a jumpshooter, still a ‘weakness’ compared to the rest of his game. Dwade exposed the Mavs as being unable to stop a dominant perimter player,Kobe in 2006(the year he averaged 35ppg and dropped 81) would have carved up the Mavs that year too.

  • Bermuda Boy

@ Dragonyeuw, i’m happy you’ve got your electricity on to wax eloquent on the historical comparisons of the game bruda.

Add 1 or 3 more years on the G.O.A.T..as in 37 year old MJ (yes, I’m aware he’d be making a special coming out of 2nd retirement, pre 3rd retirement for this match) v 30 year old Kobe and I’ll say we got a game.

    Much respect Lion.

p.s: Been thinking about organizing a NBA Live ’09 and NBA 2k9 tourny at Little Theatre, sorry Speciality Theatre over Easter…think there’d be enough gamers to make it worth while?
