We Reminisce: Wilt Scores 100!

47 years ago, on March 2, 1962, Wilt Chamberlain achieved the impossible. Obliterating his previous NBA scoring record of 78 points set less than three months earlier, Wilt shot 36-for-63 from the field and 28-for-32 from the line (remarkable, considering his career free throw percentage was 51%) to reach the century mark.

While this is clearly one of the greatest games ever, most fans have this somewhere in their Top 10, but not No. 1. If scoring 100 in a game (and getting the W) isn’t the gold standard, then what is?

It is #1 and should be the single greatest basketball game ever. Mj is still the GOAT but best single game is Wilt.

wish i had been alive to witness

  3. Vinny says:

Guy Rodgers was the point guard on that team -may he RIP. He was a ref here in LA(in his sixties) in a league I played in.-real nice guy-great stories.

  4. dirty thirty says:

obviously an unbelievable game – but it was “only” double his season avg. of 50.4 ppg
    to me, jordan’s 69 (and 63) and kobe’s 81 are more impressive

  5. Luigi says:

damn wilt is amazing.. its crazy to see that Wilt doesnt get talked about in GOAT convo’s…i could only imagine him playing in the 80′s-90′s…same era as MJ.

  6. Ian says:

best game ever played best player ever

i think this is more impressive because jordan and kobe had the three point line i still like the admirals and icemans final day buckets to win scoring titles more also.

wilt always said (messin of course in case someone takes this for real) that if the three point line existed back then he would have scored 150

he is not left out a couple of months ago there was a article here about the best ever and i think wilt had more votes than jordan and magic so hes not as overlooked as u think

  8. Jones says:

Good thing LeBron and Wade are playing against each other today. Perhaps one of them can attempt to go for this number…will take LeBron 100 shots though

Shaq in his prime vs Stilt in his prime- what happens??

  10. Prof. TX says:

Wilt’s legendary game probably is the gold standard for a single game performance, and I’d put the quadruple-doubles as the second best because of how difficult and rare they have been.

  11. Ian says:

    prof tx
    agree

  12. Al Qaeda Jada says:

Wilt’s other scoring record is even more impressive, haha

  13. AY says:

By dirty’s logic, laker’s sun yue is on pace to have the greatest single scoring game in nba’s history with his season average of 0.6 and single game high of 4. That’s almost 7x his average, that would be like wilt scoring 350points in his season where he averaged 50! Now that’s the gold standard.

Seriously though, how about wilt’s single game 55 rebounds? That is not even a standard, it’s just impossible.

    @ dirty thirty

You must be out your rabid @$$ mind if you think that a 63, 69 or 81 point game is more impressive than 100. All two point field goals and free throws? No benefit of a three point line? This is a record that is a safe as it gets. No one is cracking 100 in the pros.

  15. fallinup says:

MJ may have had the 3 point line. But he wasn’t allowed to grab rebounds right off the rim. There were times where Wilt would snatch his own teammates shots off of the rim and cram it back home.

Don’t get me wrong. Big Dipper was the shit. And 100 point game is the greatest single moment ever for basketball. in an era like that, with a game still eons away from diversity…if not for that moment, the NBA would not be what it is today.

  16. Luigi says:

wait wait. yo dime. dont u think u’ll lose sales if u put ur magazine online where ppl can c it for free?

  17. dirty thirty says:

dudes .. i’m not saying it isn’t an unbelievable record or anything, but if sun yue scores more than double the leading scorer’s average, i’ll be impressed.

if wilt had a 40 point game that one season, it was a sub-par game – can anybody imagine that?

so if kobe scores 81 when nobody has averaged more than about 30ppg over the season for 20 years, this is at least as impressive to me.

  18. vinny del negro says:

    @Ian

I hate when people mention David Robinson’s season ending game to win the scoring title as one of the great games. He spent a lot of time cherry picking. Dude didn’t even come across half court on some defensive possessions.

  19. bsteezy3 says:

Bottom Line: Wilt’s 100 point game is one of the most unbreakable records ever. In fact, I don’t think anyone will ever break it. I was highly impressed by Kobe’s 81 (shit…some of his 60 point games were very impressive too!), but I don’t even think that anyone will catch Kobe’s mark. The 100 point game in the NBA will NEVER happen again…and there’s no footage of this! Al Qaeda Jada–I’m with you dude. The rumor is that Wilt has slept with over 10,000 women…someone has a better chance at breaking that record than the 100pt. game…(still both are very impressive).

  20. Ian says:

vinny del negro first thing u r the reason robinson didnt have a shot at the title second dont make stuff up u know there is a rule against that even if he did that how many people can score 71??? yeah thought so.

  21. Mark says:

True testament to how you don’t have to look good to nab 20,000 women.
