Dahntay Jones Trips Kobe: A Dirty Play

When asked about Dahntay Jones sticking his leg out and tripping him during the third quarter of last night’s game, Kobe simply said, “Good defense” with a little smirk on his face. Mark and Phil Jackson weren’t so coy about it – both called it a dirty play. You be the judge…

All them fake thugass cats who think them be all that. This cat ain’t got shit y’all, he can’t ball and can stop Kobe by being a cheapshot thug. The Black Mamba is gonna bite this cat’s ass tomorrow night in LA.

    True thugs never lie.
    Tyrone

  2. E$ says:

So, he a dirty player…LMAO – The biggest job in Dohntay Jones career, trying to stop Kobe. Yeah, it might get alittle dirty. Stop cryin’ & man up!

  3. Frank says:

dirty play indeed… but as he didn’t get caught I’d have to agree with Kobe: good defense…
plays like this are part of the game, kobe also has a lot of tricks in his book…

  4. netstar882211 says:

Jones is getting too frustrated guarding kobe. rather than channeling his game, he is getting too physical and playing dirty. It is time for the refs to get their heads out of the sand and start reviewing game tape.

  5. Rafa23 says:

jones said he was just playing hard after phil jackson criticized that play. but playing hard is something different.
i thought he played it ok against paul, being borderline dirty.
but those plays with shoving in the back or tripping can get real ugly for the other guy. just grab the guy for gods sake.
and please dont say man up. kobe didn’t say anything to the press. but why keep the refs ignoring this shit? I’m not saying the nuggets are favored, because they are not.
but seeing the flagrants called in these playoffs I dont understand the refs not blowing the whistle there…

  6. fallinup says:

He’ll probably get a shot from the league. He might not even play next game.

Overall, when I first saw it…it looked like it wasn’t intentional at all. But after some slo-mo…you can see that it was a pretty good trip.

Like it’s been said though…he didn’t get caught so thats a good play. Everyone has their sneaky tactics. Jones just pulled one off and pissed off Kobe. haha

  7. king says:

its not a foul if the whistle didn’t blow. everyone plays dirty you just have to be reserved with it so the refs arent always zoning in on you looking for it. if hes getting away with it why not do it. his job is to make things tough for Kobe , not stop him as no ones iks going to do that and dahntay is doing his job.

  8. BERN BROGDEN aka BINO BROWN STR8 UP N DOWN says:

Crazy, only way they can stop that guy is with BODY BLOWS, SHOVES, and TRIPS. But this is the NBA not UCF so…

    KOBE = UNSTOPPABLE

    Nifty trip Dahntay!
    Real nice!

Now Kobe will SLAUGHTER anyone who’s replacing you for your suspension game.

And then, he’ll SLAUGHTER YOU some more, when you come back.

His team might lose, but it’ll be fun to watch.

  9. Big Mike says:

    Dme family,
Ya’ll are amazing. When Kobe hit Artest with the chicken wing, everyone was talking about Kobe being dirty. He didn’t get called for a foul but everyone said he was dirty. Now, a guy blatantly trips him & pushes him in the back while he’s in the air, and everyone says since he didn’t get a foul called, it’s good D. Really… I’m sure if someone did that to you on the court, especially pushing you in the back while you’re in the air, all hell would break loose. I know I’d be swinging. Dirty play all around. Hate Kobe all you want but respect the game.

  10. Marques says:

And Kobe doesn’t play dirty? He doesn’t throw elbows at defenders?

  11. Dagomar says:

This was a dirty play, and Jones should be suspended for a game. That said, big Mike, Kobe’s also a dirty player. Love the guy, but he’s a dirty player.

  12. Simon says:

I think once we start slo-mo reviewing every non-call we can find a lot of dirty tricks and fouls. Was it dirty? Yeah. Does everyone have their dirty tricks? Yeah. Does everyone have their plays reviewed? No. So let’s just leave the game calling to the refs.

If Kenyon Martin got a $25,000 fine for his blatant push on Dirk, I don’t see how they could warrant giving Jones a suspension.

  13. Ian says:

i like it but then again my laker hate doesnt let me judge this for what it is hehehe.

  14. Rafa23 says:

    @ marques
    so that justifies jones’ actions?

  15. Rafa23 says:

    @ ian
and this coming from a nuggets fan!!!

  16. Big Mike says:

    Dagomar,
Little elbows are part of the game. Everyone does that. I don’t consider that dirty. Pushing in the back while someone is airborne and tripping is dirty. I’ve played ball all my life and little elbows, not measured/calculated elbows, are part of it. thats just my opinion.

  17. QQ says:

When you can’t defend your man, trip him. Great advice from Dahntay Jones to all aspiring ballers.

You could also slap him in the back of the head, like Skip did, for a little variation. (and this coming from a Magic fan!).

But then again, who wouldn’t want to hit Eddie House.

  18. PWEEZY says:

Dahntay Jones wins 2009 Bruce Bowen award shady moves

  19. RonNation says:

    fuck kobe

    .

  20. E$ says:

It was good D vs hornets, now it’s dirty?

  21. Phillyfanatic says:

How is everyone trying rationalize D Jones’ play??? He had two dirty plays in consecutive games! Kobe or no Kobe, he made a couple of dirty plays. We all know that the games would have been stopped, someone would’ve threatened to go to the trunk or the game would have been straight hard fouls the rest of the way, if it was on the streets.

  22. Rare Air says:

That play was pretty weak – cred to Mamba for shaking it off in the post game presser – refocus and go get those cats tomorrow night back home – The big story still remains Denver’s energy and their abaility to crash the boards. They are making Pau, Lamar, and Bynum look straight up goofy. I hold a similar disdain for this Denver team that I had for the 90′s Knicks, but damn they come to play!!!!! LA hasnt answered the bell once this whole postseason. They have to start soon or this will be over.

  23. E$ says:

Leave it to a Philly fan to take it to the streets

  24. Taj says:

Yeah thats a dirty play… But if thats what you gotta do to stop the best player in the world, then do it as long as you dont get caught.. I remember playin on the blacktop growing up. When you’re staring “game point” in the face, you foul your man any fuckin way possible so he doesn’t score if you don’t get a steal!! This era of the NBA is too soft.

  25. Michorizo says:

That was as dirty as Kenyon Martin’s lady.

  26. E$ says:

Ask Kurt Rambis if it’s dirty, I’m sure he’s seen alot worst

  27. JayTea says:

Like Mark Jackson said “You are what you do” I have not seen jones play enough other than this series, but watch him, he has two hands in the back a lot. I think the ref’s will be keeping a close eye on from here on out. PJ is gonna kill the lakers by sticking with Fish. And did I hear that Sasha is shooting 15% for the series? Kept the wrong VIC I guess…

  28. Frank says:

    @Big Mike:

That’s why there are refs on the court, to judge these situations…
Like I said, it is a dirty play, and the push in the back is even dirtier, I totally agree…
But Jones’ job is to stop Kobe, and that’s what he’s trying to do… The refs should’ve blown their whistles, but they didn’t, so tough break for Kobe… but I assume he knows how to retaliate.. he just has to hope the refs don’t catch him…

  29. haq-a-shaq says:

The lakers aree getting lazy with defense and rebounding, but the nuggets ARE playing dirty basketball. Kobe might get a little elbow here and there but thats because he never gets calls going his way. Dantay Jones needs to get suspended cause both those plays in game 4 were crap. But those plays just make kobe come back the next game and kill you. So get him mad all you want.

  30. Kudabeen says:

They didn’t even talk about the undercut on the jumpshot. When Kobe went up for a shot Dantay stepped under him to the point where Kobe slipped sideways.

No matter what advantage to Denver if the Refs are going to look elsewhere. It is very interesting to see the calls Kobe don’t get. We talk about superstar calls, but some superstars actually have to work for the call.

  31. ERIC says:

If either of these plays happened to LeBron, Dahntay Jones would be thrown out of the league… Kobe gets no respect from the refs, and definitely no “superstar” calls..

  32. Yoooo says:

I guarantee if that were LeBron Jones would have gotten thrown out… They treat that nigga like he still gets breast fed

  33. Phillyfanatic says:

@ ERIC….I agree 100% with that! LBJ gets every call, let his headband get touched and their calling the paramedics!

@ Rare Air…LA’s bigs are playing like some kids and that should be the topic of discussion, not D Jones’ tactics

  34. Jason says:

Personally I think the push deserves a fine but the trip should have just been called a personal foul.

  35. jboogie says:

I’ve seen Chris Paul do plays like that thousands of times but nobody calls him dirty……

  36. doc says:

Yall asking for a suspension for that nut ass trip?He Ding the fuck up.How else is he supposed to stop Kobe.As I stated in the other 25,000 is he a dirty player post.If u not a dirty player u wont play period.Of course yall dont wanna get tripped because yall aint playing for no marbles.U think Kobe never tripped a motherfucker that got past him?Jones doing what the fuck he supposed to do which is why his team 2 games from the chip.Yall know who dont play dirty?the fucking Toronto baby Asses so if yall wanna see team play put in a DVD of Kobe giving some pussies 81 points with not one clothesline trip or flagrant coming his way.Kobe said good d with a smile.Words from a true baller.

  37. doc says:

If they pushed Bron like that he wouldnt have even went nowhere.@philly fan-Of course they would do that in the street.Thats why they bum asses there in the first place. And in the Illadelph cats pulling guns out the trunk if u block the shit clean anyway.

  38. doc says:

When he was doing the same shit to CP3 yall was happy talking shit like CP3 getting exposed and all that shit. Now he giving yall man the same treatment he dirty.Yeah well I bet ya ass the whole state of Colorado dont think he dirty.

You asking for alot, he did rape someone daughter

  40. heavy d says:

A dirty play? Yes. We already established last series that Kobe’s dirty as well, so I have trouble being too worried about it. Neither act merits a suspension and I’m not even sure about a fine. Both should have been fouls. Pushing in the back happens on a lot of rebound plays. The refs missed the trip and the refs in the next game will probably be watching and quick whistling Jones to either make up for it or send it a message. It won’t make a difference. Jones job is to slow down Kobe for as long as he can stay on the court. He’ll just be off the court quicker.

  41. doc says:

Kobe had his chance at the superstar treatment but he took some ass and Stern made him second status after that.Whos fault is that.Only thing dirty is Kob dick.

  42. Rafa23 says:

well doc, jones played cp3 hard, no obvious dirty plays like those 2…

  43. Yucca Man says:

Come on, let’s not be a bunch of wimps. A little trip like that is dirty? As if Jones is suddenly the basketball Satan? It’s nothing compared to this:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7r6vXeOfyQ

And McHale got just a foul. No flagrant. No suspension. And listen to the announcers: “That’s just part of the game.”

Man I wish fans and refs could handle a little more dirt in basketball these days.

  44. nick says:

the play wasn’t all that dirty. jones was gonna get beat by kobes cut so all he could do was trip him. he prob was gonna accept the foul call instead of giving up a layup but the refs didn’t call it. so now everyone is calling it dirty.

now if it had been carmelo that gotten tripped by kobe would ya’ll still call it dirty?

  45. Ian says:

    LOL@15 never gets old

  46. flegman says:

whoa… unanimous pick for this year’s Bruce Bowen Award is… Dahntay Jones!

  47. doc says:

@flegman-Yup u said it right. And thats what u need to win.Ask San An,or the 90′s Knicks or the Bad Boys is Dontay dirty.Matter of fact, they should ask MJ is Dontay dirty so he can laugh in their faces.Cats was pile driving Mike to the floor and for real Kobe loves that shit out there. Its the fans complaining and bitching.Kobe gonna elbow Dontay in the chops next game and yall gonna say he just boxing out though.

  48. loc says:

    The NBA is getting pussified.
That whole Bynum flagrant on Birdman was horrible!

It wasn’t the cleanest nicest play, but no one got hurt and people need to suck it up. kobes lucky no one has smashed him in his smug mug these playoffs.

  49. Mark Dockery says:

Looks like a legitimate basketball foul to me.

Wrong to do? Yes. Dirty? How so? What risk was there for more serious injury versus all the other types of fouls you can commit?

Would I have done it? Probably not. Maybe that’s why I’m not in the NBA. The NBA is full of “tricks”, dirty or not. Watch basketball more if you just can’t accept it.

  50. Claw says:

The Dahntay trip was a foul but that is it, guys grab jerseys, step on feet so they can’t jump, elbow in the post, its flipping basketball.

Suspension? When Bowen played the Suns he kneed Nash in the balls and kicked Amare as he went up for a dunk and they sent film but the NBA didn’t do anything, tripping Kobe wasn’t that bad and not as bad as when he elbowed Artest in the chest/neck area. Refs have been quick to blow the whistle and I’m sure the Nuggets hope Kobe gets pissed and starts trying to beat them on his own because they’ll lose. Kobe plays his best ball when everybody is involved, like the close out game against the Rockets not when he trys to take over.

  51. E$ says:

“I’ll show you dirty” – Rick Mahorn

  52. Ray says:

What happened was Jones got beat on the cut, and he had to do something to stop Kobe.

I didn’t watch the game live, and when I heard it on the radio, I thought it was something big. When I got home and saw on TV, I didn’t think it was a big deal. Maybe a flagrant-1. Should’ve been a personal foul of course.

But again, if this had happened to anyone else then it wouldn’t be a big deal. Kobe has gotten away with a lot worse. And I’m tired of the ESPN commentators blatantly siding with the Lakers/Kobe on every call.

Their tone is very passive when its for the Nuggets, e.g. “Yes, it did looked like Melo may have been touched on the way up from this angle. No foul called.”

But, it gets stronger and less passive when its for the Lakers, e.g. “Kobe was obviously hammered. No foul called?” This is the constant theme throughout the playoffs.

Let them play their games. Lakers fans are having their thongs on to tight now, since the Lakers aren’t getting the ticky-tack calls they’re used to during the regular season.

I do recall a lot of cheering by the Lakers fans when Fisher threw an elbow to Scola’s face. Oh, but wait, that’s a savvy veteran play that is showing the opponent who’s really tough in the playoffs. B.S.

  53. Jerry says:

If you hate Kobe then this is a great play if you can get away with it, that’s all.

Just wait til Jones trips your own beloved favorite player and see what you say, hypocrites

  54. Deacon says:

The problem here is consistency. Bynum gets a flagrant 1 for a basketball play where he made a play on the ball, and slightly tweaks Birdman’s headband. Jones gets nothing for blatantly tripping Kobe.

I agree the game is getting pussified, but if you’re going to call it, call it both ways and call it consistently.

    @43 (and others)
Rambis thought it was a good hard foul, and didn’t bitch about it, but I’m sure he’d freak the hell out on the refs if he made a similar play and they called a flagrant on him.

  55. ishlifyhead says:

Memo to Kobe: That’s what you get for kneeing Battier in the face and elbowing Artest in the head (or near it). Funny how karma works.

  56. scruz808 says:

The job of the referee is to control the game. If someone does that to me on the streets, no words, that means they are looking for a fight. Anybody thinks that is fair that plays basketball is ridiculous, there is no way that anyone with some heart would let somebody push them in the back like that and just keep playing.

  57. dirtydbags says:

Dhantay’s face will get called for fouling Kobe’s elbow…count on it.
