THE GOONS ARE OUT. That was the e-mail sent by one of the Dime crew last night during Lakers/Rockets, around the time everybody from typically fiery Kobe and Ron Artest to mild-mannered Derek Fisher to teen heartthrob Luke Walton was issuing chin-checks and techs and getting themselves ejected … With L.A. down 0-1 in the series, Kobe (40 pts, 16-27 FG) came out on a seek-and-destroy mission. He dropped 15 points in the first quarter, including a buzzer-beating fadeaway that put the Lakers up 14 at the end of the period, wearing that trademark cocky/angry sneer the entire time. Pau Gasol (22 pts, 14 rebs, 4 blks) was also locked in, wearing his trademark “Something stinks, and it might be me” sneer … One of Houston’s advantages here is their depth, and the bench totally outplayed L.A.’s reserves in the second quarter to make up the deficit. Kobe hit a three with five seconds left before halftime to tie the game, then came out in the second half in kill-mode again to give the Lakers another big lead. The Rockets got within single digits in the fourth quarter, but every time they got close, Kobe would hit another shot to keep them out of reach. The coldest dagger was when Kobe had Shane Battier draped all over him, so he ducked under Shane and tossed a pass to himself off the backboard, then scored on a tip-in over Yao. If Mamba had been able to dunk that, it would have 1.3 million YouTube hits already … As for the hooligan antics: After Lamar Odom, Walton and Luis Scola were hit with technicals late in the third quarter during a stretch where playoff fouls were being handed out at a pace Kurt Rambis would’ve been proud of, Fisher got tossed when he fought off a Scola screen by elbowing him in the throat so hard he made his teeth click. Scola’s “I’ve been shot” fall didn’t even seem like a flop, either. Artest (25 pts) and Kobe got into it later on, and Artest got ejected after allegedly making a throat-slash gesture. Ron swore afterwards that he wasn’t doing anything bad, but he has as much trust going with the refs as Mike Tyson would at, well, any place where there’s a lot of women … Von Wafer also got sent to the locker room, after he got into a spat with Rick Adelman and the coach told him to take a walk. Wafer needs to chill out with the Ricky Davis stuff. He’s like three steps fresh out the D-League … Thanks to foul trouble, Yao was quiet with 12 points and 10 boards. And if Yao was quiet, Andrew Bynum took a veritable vow of silence, playing just eight minutes and committing three fouls to go with zero points and one rebound …

Charles Barkley put it best when describing the Orlando Magic’s effort last night: They played like they were satisfied having won Game 1 in Boston, and didn’t ever expect to go up 2-0. Even with Paul Pierce playing just five minutes in the first half due to foul trouble, the Celtics dropped 61 points in the first half and were never really challenged throughout … Eddie House was the biggest benefactor of Pierce spending most of the night on the bench, and took advantage with 31 points on 11-of-14 shooting, 4-of-4 beyond the arc. Eddie even threw in an actual layup, which we haven’t seen him do since he was at Arizona State … In the second half, House hit a three and accidentally hit Rafer Alston on the head during his celebration, and Rafer very intentionally smacked him back on the head in retaliation. House spun around and the two went chest-to-chest, but no real fight broke out … Rajon Rondo was just incredible. From the outset you saw his plan: Get into the lane, draw Dwight Howard (12 pts, 12 rebs) away from whoever he’s guarding, then set that guy up for a shot. Rondo had 12 dimes by halftime, and ended up with 18 assists, 15 points and 11 boards. In the second half he took a pass cutting to the rim and threw down a nasty dunk between Howard and Rashard Lewis … NBA TV’s Andre Aldridge calling the highlight of that Rondo dunk: “Something stank, and I want some.” What? … Rondo (2nd) and Howard (1st) were both named to the NBA All-Defensive team yesterday. Check out the rest of the selections here. Our only big issue was Kevin Garnett making the first team despite playing just 57 games all year. A lot of people seemed to have a problem with Chris Paul and LeBron making the first team, but since when is it odd for the guy who leads the League in steals and the guy who’s constantly on highlight reels blocking shots and headlines the NBA’s #1-ranked defensive squad to get accolades at the end of the season? … We’re out like D-Fish …

Andre Aldrige is a damn fool. I think he get’s paid to say some of this wack ish. Lolz. Sometimes the way Eric Snow looks at that fool say’s it all. And for Ron Artest proud of him. Not that he got ejected he shouldn’t have. If somebody elbowed me in my throat i would tell them what’s up. It was funny seening Coach Adelman talking to him. Its not farfetched that Rondo might average a triple double threw out the playoffs. They deeper they Celts get, the bigger the feat ofcourse.
If Howard got suspended for his elbow on Sammy, i expect the Lakers without Fisher and KB next game. They both did the same thing D21 did only they actually both connected with their elbows and both in the throat area!

After reviewing, fisher didnt actually throw an elbow, just hockey checked Scola, so if Rondo didnt get suspendid for his wrestling move on Kirk, Fisher doesnt seem likely to get suspendid. But Kobe? See you in game 4.

Great win by the Celtics. That was the Celtics basketball that we used to see during the season. Orlando just couldn’t keep up with the pace. Rondo is averaging triple double, can u say the best point guard this post season. Imagine if we play with Garnett, this would have been a sweeep. Ok im going way too far ahead, lol. We tied at 1. First and foremost. THANK YOU RAFER ALSTON! I can’t stand Eddie House, I don’t care if he drop 50. I really wish Rafer would have done more, especially when House turned around. I already knew he wasn’t going to do nothing. Alston should have Z-Bo’d him. Still the slap was funny and needed!
Fisher should be suspended. He alreadys said he saw Scola pulling at L.O’s jersey before so that is the reason he “stepped in”. Even if you look at the play you can see him looking for Scola well before, Scola comes and he steps into him clearly before any picks are set really.
For anybody calling it a “flop” that is nuts. I don’t care how tall or heavy Scola is compared to Fish. Fisher is very strong and when anyone is hitting you with a football style shoulder you gonna go back. Most def. wasn’t a flop. Premeditated action and Fish should honestly get 2 games but at least 1.
NBA refs owe Ron an apology. Kobe clearly elbowed dude and they actually call a foul on Ron. Matter-of-fact it was a lot of suspect calls the Lakers got. Hope Houston gets the same love in H-Town. Kobe …like Eddie House, clearly wasn’t going to buck. He saw Ron coming at him and had visions of Chris Childs in his head.

Scola was blindsided….Fish SHOULD get at least 1 game. It was intentional, just look at Fish’s lack of surprise when the foul was given out.
Barkley made an interesting point post game…Houston has a whole bunch of pitbulls. So we’ll see if LA comes with the fugazi tough guy swagger they were trying to pull last night. I don’t think they can keep that up…just like I don’t think Kobe will carry his team like he did in the next couple games.

I think Fisher and Rafer will get suspensions and no one else. Rafer’s smack was week but too obvious a swing and clearly after the play. Fisher straight up Polomalu’d Scola’s ass…he saw him coming over to set a pick and really just laid his shoulder into homeboy’s sternum as hard as he could. I don’t even think Scola’s fall was a flop, Fish is stronger than a lot of people think and Scola wasn’t expecting the contact since he was just coming to set the pick and hadn’t really gotten there yet.
Kobe’s elbow wasn’t anything like Dwight’s elbow on Dalembert. It looked like an inadvertant elbow when him and Artest were both fighting for position…Dwight’s was well after the play and clearly intentional. Kobe should have been called for a foul on the play…not a flagrant or anything, just a foul. And finally, I never thought I’d say this but, Artest did the right thing and was actually very smart about how he did it…apparently the NBA truly is where amazing happens.

I called scola floppin and i’ll say it again…I’m 6’5 225 (which is smaller than scola) and played football and pro ball so I’ve been in incidents like that. And the fact still remains, if I’m “blindsided” by a guy, specially one who is smaller than me, ya i might fall cuz i’m not expecting it but my feet are not flying off the ground like I was hit with a mario kart banana sending spiraling back 4 feet. Scola got checked with fishers elbow/tricep. Its not like he turned and caught him with a street fighter uppercut. Sure it was a cheap shot but don’t act like scola didn’t sell it at all. A guy could run up and elbow me as I’m typing this and I’m not flyin halfway across the room. It was a elbow, he didn’t spear the gum. And I’d expect Gee to argue since hes a houston fan, just like laker fans who hyped up bynum even though he still sucks and they just overlook it now lol.
The one thing I hate about kobe and lebron and i’m noticing more and more is they think their above stuff. Like kobe was gettin interviewed about the foul and he just goes “well…it was playoff basketall” almost as if he didn’t kno what was going on or what had happened with the elbow. It reminds me of rasheed with that “both teams played hard” line. I’ll tell you this: I gained a new respect for Artest last night. He could have easily went off the deep end, especially when the foul was called on HIM, but he didn’t. He told the ref what Kobe did, and when the ref acted like he didn’t wanna hear it, he went straight to Kobe, and let him know he’s not gonna put up with him puttin’ his damn hands on him like that. That was it; he didn’t try to whoop the dude or anything. He even explained it after the game, and made complete sense.
My biggest problem is if you’re gonna do some shit like that (Fisher running through picks, Kobe elbowing Artest in the throat), then own up to what you did. Don’t try and talk your way around it (Fisher), or disguise it as playoff basketball (Kobe). We all saw Skip slap Eddie House silly, and he didn’t try and act like he didn’t do anything. He owned up to it. I’m all for physical basketball, as I’m sure others are too, who actually play basketball, but when it becomes wack and/or dirty, then it becomes a problem.

the refereeing last night in the lakers/rockets was a joke. they didn’t want anything to escalate and so they called a bunch of crap on both sides.
at first i thought ron artest did a throat slash at kobe but if you watch it again he is telling the ref that kobe hit him in the throat with his elbow. i don’t think it deserved a second t, but the refs had stu in the stands and were not about to give artest the benefit of a doubt.
how they called a foul on artest when he gets elbowed by kobe tells you how ridiculous the ref’ing was. and it was on both sides. lakers got called for a lot of tick tack stuff. refs took a lot of steam out of that game.
where are all the andrew bynum fans?? that guy is proving to be less valuable than scalabrine!

Ron-Ron seems to always try to plat mind games with Mamba but he fails. Kobee definitely has that “D-Bo” mind control over Artest. This series just got worse for the Rockets. Meaning, with the physicality of the game, the refs started blowing their whistles all over the 4th Q. The Rockets play a physical/grabbing/holding game which will be closely called in game 3, benefitting LA. Stern will not allow Goon tactics, giving LA space and freedom. LA wins game 3. Plus, Artest will be trying to prove a point and score 50, which we know he can’t do. Ron-Ron should leave the MAmba alone.

You know what, I like Kobe. I really think he did a lot more with the team he has than Lebron did (although I think Wade did more than both of them with the team he had too), but the NBA and Stern were (are) determined to crown Lebron as the second coming! With that said, that was NOT an inadvertant elbow. Anyone with half a brain that isn’t already hardwired to see only Laker gold and purple has to admit that that elbow was intentional. Honestly, I don’t think Artest would have even tripped about the elbow if he hadn’t been the one called for the foul when it was so clear that he was the one fouled. What I saw (prior to the elbow) was two players trying to box each other out when Kobe got muscled under the basket (and thus out of reach of the rebound) when he purposely hit Artest. The messed up part is that Kobe didn’t even pretend like he’d been fouled and gave no change in his demeanor to indicate that he’d been fouled which leaves me to wonder what the hell the refs were looking at on this play (conspiracy anyone?)! The league isn’t going to suspend Bryant (even though they should because that elbow was similar to what Dwight did) although I do expect Kobe to get a hefty fine. As for Fisher, that Will be a one game suspension for two reasons: 1) he intentionally looked over his shoulder at the oncoming pick and then intenionally squared up and put an elbow and a shoulder into an unsuspecting player and 2)it was an absolute disgrace that Artest was ejected in the first place so Stu is going to make sure that the mistake is remedied at the expense of the Lakers. And for anyone talking about Scola flopped all I can say is this; have you ever been hit unexpectedly by someone anyone? Even if it didn’t put you on your back, you were likely moved more than you would have been had you been expecting it. Yes I know Scola is 6’9″ and Fisher is 6’1″ but, in the NFL, corners and safeties are routinely between 5’10″ to 6’2″ and habitually put larger backs, ends, and linemen on their collective asses. Anyone on this board talking about they could take a shot from any athlete simply because the opponent is smaller, they are full of BS. Consider this; Derek fisher is bigger than Ronnie Lott, Deion Sanders, Rod Woodson, and Champ Bailey.. four former Pro-bowl shut down corners in the nfl with two of them being Hall of Famers while the other two probably will be getting in later. By the logic of some of you, Liston and Frazier should have knocked out Ali, but we all know how that turned out. In any case, all the scraps last night were a direct result of the Lakers’ frustration with not being able to put the Rockets away. And let’s face it, it took for Yao to play a limited (and ineffectual) 20 minutes (10pt, 12 rb), Artest to get ejected (the Rocket’s leading scorer), Kobe to score 40, and Gasol to score 22 for LA to escape with a win… and I do mean escape because the game was a lot closer than the final score which ended up being skewed in the end because the Rockets lost their primary scorer for the night and had no one to turn to in the waning minutes of the game. And let’s be real, ALL of those things are not going to keep happening every game in this series so the Lakers know they are in a fair amount of trouble. Additionally, if Kobe does resort to his “I am going to save this team” mentality, he not only runs the risk of alienating his teammates after a beautiful regular season run, but also giving the Rockets a more focused attack during games which would be come double effective since Kobe’s domination will have taken everyone else out of their game. Don’t believe me? Lost amid all the celebration of the Laker’s win and the fights dispersed in between is the fact that the Lakers only put three players in double figures: Kobe (40), Gasol (22), and Fisher (12). No one else could find a rhythm because it was the Kobe show. Yes the Lakers won with this new formula, but it is not the formula that got them to the second best record in the league and the best in the West. Incidentally, the Lakers will need their regular season winning formula to beat the Rockets… and Kobe has already strayed away from that.

I don’t think Rondo triple double was overrated. His shooting was horrible but he did have 18 assist with only 3 TO. Rondo just had one of those Jason Kidd triple doubles games. I can’t believe I am going to say this but Jackie Moon returning from injuries is the best thing that happened to our bench. This dude actually played 35 minutes tonight. Orlando just doesn’t have that mental toughness to compete in a drawn-out series, even though they have a big talent edge in the frontcourt with KG out. I still say Celts in 7.

It’s not so much that he’s a bad one-on-one defender. He’s made strides in becoming a better defender. It’s just that there are other defenders, on-ball defenders, that perform that aspect of the game better than him (Artest, Wade, Battier, to name a few). I love The King as much as anyone, but when I saw he came in SECOND for DPOY, even I had to admit it was extremely ridiculous. The crazy blocks has a lot to do with it, too. That’s what makes Sportscenter.
I’m witcha on the Rockets-Lakers series. If H-town won BOTH in LA, then I would think they could pull it off, but I don’t think they have enough firepower to beat the Lakers. They’re definitely not afraid of them; they’re just not as good as ‘em.

The Rockets play a physical style(grabbing&holding)as you saw Battier grabbing jerseys all night and Stern isn’t going to let Goon ball back in i.e 80′s/90′s b-ball. This will take away from the Rockets defensive scheme. The game will be tightly called which will favor LA. LA isn’t a rough and rugged team, Houston is but the refs will control game 3. That benefits the Lakers.

Oh, and another topic I wanted to touch on why Houston lost (besides the obvious; Adelman lost that game too and I would bet that Wafer got sent packing for telling his coach the same thing I was yelling at the TV midway through the third quarter which was “put the guys back in the game that got you back into the game”! We all saw Kobe and crew inflict a damaging first blow in that first quarter which would have probably folded a good ninety percent of the other NBA teams only to see Houston’s bench (along with Artest) absorb the punch and throw one of their own. The lineup on the floor that got Houston the lead was Artest, Hayes (playing center), Landry, Wafer, and Lowry. However, we never saw that lkineup again for the rest of the night. If that isn’t bad caoching, then I don’t know what is! Additionally, how does a man that scores 16 against the Laker starters and bench in one quarter not see the floor again until 59.7 seconds left in the third quarter. Landry should have had about 30 points in last night’s game and Wafer should have had about 20 at the pace he was going. ironically, if either of those players were having those kind of nights and ere being coached by, say, Phil Jackson, you can rest assured that they would have stayed on the court. While I respect Adelman, I think I have got to side with Wafer on this one because I KNOW that speaking (pretty much) what I have just written is what got him exiled. Okay, maybe he shouldn’t go at his coach in such a public manner but it clearly shows that he knows how to read agame. I gaurantee you that if Wafer and Landry would have been allowed to restart the third in the same lineup, the outcome of that game would have been different. And the jacked up part is that Adelman is consistently guilty of this. It’s like he feels like he owes his starters or something. As a coach, the hot hands play and the off people sit; it’s as simple as that. I understand that you want your starters to keep their confidence and give them a chance ti find their groove, but there is now ay Aaron Brooks should have still been in the game at after the midway point of the thrid quarter. And then to compound his bad choices, adelman finally puts Lowry and landry in (after they’re down 12) in asituation where the refs are calling the game in a way that is not benficial to the way either of thise guys play so guess what? Yep, you guessed it! Both Lowry and Landry are whistled for fouls that had not been called against them the whole game (albeit they were legitimate fouls). That type of thing takes away from a player’s rhythm which neither player was able to find for the rest of the game. afew other things I want to touch on is the inconsistent officiating on both sides of the ball, but more so against Houston. The most egrarious examples were when Yao (in the fourth) picked up a charge that was drawn by Odom. Now let me be clear; it WAS a charge since Yao back heels were on the line in the restricted area! However, less than 3 minutes after, Lowry was whistled for a charge even though Vujacic’s heels were clearly on the line as well; a play that ended up negated Lowry’s bucket an a chance at a three point play with 8 minutes to play… which would have cut the deficit to 6. Also, another play (which others have already brought up), was the play where Lowry got a steal and went the length of the floor to the rack, missed the lay up,with the rebound being cleaned up by Landry. The points were whistled off due to offensive goal tending although it the ball was clearly out of the cylinder as evidenced by Landry having to lift the ball back over the rim but also by the fact that every replay showed that the ball bounce off a down in front of the rim. Now, I am not ever going to believe that refs can get every call right because the speed of the game is so fast. However, in a hotly contested game, these types of mistakes are unnacceptable because both of these plays, and a few more, are what i like to call momentum changers; plays that give or take away from the confidence of a team and its players. In both plays, the Rocket’s were mounting comebacks to cut the deficit to 6 and 5 (respectively) but each time the points were erased by officials. This type of inconsistent, obvious bias is what makes my NBA experience most unpleasant.

Anyone that plays b-ball has thrown short elbows while fighting for position. Ron isn’t use to someone doing that to him, he even said that in the post game interview. It’s the playoffs, that happens but Ron needs to remain cool because he won’t get the benefit of the doubt from the refs. He did more harm than good to his team by getting ejected. Other than Yao, he is the only one who can score consistantly on his own.

But to have the foul against him was absurd. We’re human (well maybe not Artest) but anybody that gets abused like that and then gets called for a foul would be ticked off too. That aint playing physical that was just wrong and the refs missed it.
Ron didnt even argue with the refs that long.
And the Rockets didnt lose because Kobe refuses to lose. blah blah blah. The Rockets lost because Yao was in foul trouble and only scored 12 points. It don’t matter how many points Kobe (or Lebron or Wade) scores; they can’t win games all by themselves.

I turned off both games last night. Orlando quit so I took the dog out for a walk. I come back, start getting into the Laker game and then the BS happens. I am actually done with basketball now. Fish was BS, Kobe hit Artest flat out and then Artest getting tossed was complete crap. First thing this morning, my buddy starts talking about how tough Fish is and how Artest deserved the elbow. Unreal. And I forgot whether or not Sasha was on the whiner/never commited a foul list, but I’m sure he was. I honestly want to get into a fight today because I am so mad.
That and I think I may have a Tyler Durder split personality thing with Scalabrine as my friend pointed out. Nobody has ever seen us together yet we do look a little to similar.

If Kobe got suspended for game 3 while Rondo threw Hinrich into the scorers table and got nothing then hell is certainly freezing over. Y’all are missing the point. Its not about playing rough. Its one thing to play rough and another to get hit in the neck and then get called for the foul. I think dude would have been cool if the foul wasnt called at all. The refs blew the game. I dont think Kobe deserves a suspension, i think Fisher does, but you know people are going to cry “superstar treatment” if #24 isnt.
I dont think all that affected the outcome of the game that much.
1. Yao was rendered almost useless in foul trouble. That won’t happen every game.
2. Scola had two okay offensive games in a row. That won’t happen every game.
3. The rockets now kinda have homecourt advantage. If they take care of business at home then its over for the lakeshow!
Its hard to say who has momentum now. You can say LA cuz they won but the rockets just got grew a chip on their shoulder.

I don’t have a problem with players getting down and dirty in any game (it let’s me know that they care enough about the outcome to put a little more than what is required into winning) but, like Mutumbo, Artest, Rodman, Ewing, Shaq, Kevin Willis, and countless others… be a man about it and not hide behind some contrived bullsh*t that only serves to make you look like even more of a di*k than you actually are!

1. fish got ejected..and jackson talked about this during the game..the EXACT SAME thing happened with deron williams doing it to bynum in the first round..all he got was a regular foul..and i feel it was mainly cause scola fell like a little bitch cause fisher is that hard and bynum didnt..it wasnt the hit..it was the effect of the hit which caused the refs to throw fish out of the game..which is stupid..call it consistantly and i dont think half the people complain as much as we do now about officiating..
2. again the effect of the hit..if ron doesnt run up to kobe and yappin..no one discusses the elbow..more than the actual elbow being thrown (which in my opinion..and i may get shit for this too..was justified..expect to be played rough if you play rough)..it was the aftermath of the elbow which is causing all of this conversation..

Phil Jackson needs to watch the replay before he compares it to Williams/Bynum. Not the same scenario.

Not to mention that Denver came into the playoffs strong and as a cohesive unit.
The Lakers started the season very well but their coach, their offense’s creator, and the rest of the league have noticed their weaknesses as well.
Being that the Lakers are the higher seed, technically they are facing more favorable competition so for Denver to be playing better than the Lakers means something. Not for nothing but even a few easy wins can put a team into a Zone, and there’s is nothing harder to beat than a team that is clicking on all cylinders.
And Fish didn’t lead the Lakers past the Celtics last year, neither did Kobe. They’re both 0/1 in the Finals since Shaq daddy left. I dont think Fish can handle Billups like he can Brooks or Lowry.

You’re right that Portland is better than N.O. but they’re also better than Utah. Teams are seeded according to the regular season standings, but that doesn’t describe how they’re playing going into the playoffs as well as how they’ll play in the postseason.
As am example last year and before then, Toronto owned Orlando in the reg season, but the Magic ate the Raptors food in the postseason, so the fact that the Lakers spanked Denver in the season means absolutely nothing if they match up this year.
The point about the Finals wasn’t DFish against Rondo, even though Rondo is the better player right now, its that when the intimidation started, Fish wasn’t enough. Now that Turiaf is gone, Fish is once again all by himself. None of the moves the Lakers made this year made them tougher. Yeah Radmonovic is gone but for Morrison so they cancel each other out.
Fish is all by himself to protect his teammates. Now, Kobe will tough it out physically, but what are Gasol, Farmar, Sasha, etc, etc, supposed to do when they’re being shoved around?
You’re right, ofcourse Phil Jax knows his team’s weak side the best. But for Tex to be dissing their execution and calling them very much beatable is not a good sign. For teams to catch the Lakers sleeping like they did is not a good sign.
