Kobe facilitates, L.O. finishes, Lakers lead 3-2

Lamar Odom (photo. Tim Tadder)
Lamar Odom was your playoff MVP last night. In the Lakers’ Game 5 win over the Nuggets, L.O. was all over the place: Applying backcourt pressure to force turnovers, crashing the boards, driving and drawing, hitting threes, dunking on cats — he had his entire game on display, that Derrick Coleman skill-set that everybody’s been expecting him to deliver for so many years, that he doesn’t utilize nearly enough. Odom (19 pts, 14 rebs, 4 blks) hit a huge three that tied the game late in the third quarter, and in the fourth he crammed on Birdman as part of an 11-0 run that opened the door for L.A. to take a 3-2 series lead. That dunk was the second of a pair of crucial momentum plays that really lifted the Lakers; the first was Shannon Brown‘s smash on Birdman’s beak that highlighted a 7-0 run in the third … While L.O. had that KG/Ewing sweat gland working overtime, Kobe (22 pts, 6-13 FG, 8 asts) barely seemed to break a sweat. Why is Kobe the only scorer in the League for which announcers use the term “facilitating” when he’s not getting a lot of points? We’ve never heard anyone say Paul Pierce or Dirk Nowitzki or Danny Granger is “facilitating.” Even if they drop 12 dimes, it’s either “trying to make plays” or “getting his teammates involved” or just “He’s not being aggressive.” … True, Nene‘s technical foul in the fourth was a classic example of these Nuggets shooting themselves in the foot by not being able to check their emotions. At the same time, though, you have to accept those kinds of moments with this group, and George Karl knows it. If Nene, J.R. Smith, K-Mart, Birdman and the rest weren’t so emotional, they wouldn’t be as good as they are. That’s why they blow teams out at home, because they thrive on positive energy from their crowd and let their emotions carry them. Chauncey Billups can keep the team at an even keel (when they need it) for the most part, but he’s just one man trying to impose his personality on 14 others … One time Carmelo (31 pts, 9-23 FG, 12-13 FT) got a tough fadeaway and-one in the lane, and on the replay you could see Lakers assistant Kurt Rambis staring in awe with a “I remember when Larry Bird used to give me buckets like that” look on his face. ‘Melo was the only one of Denver’s scorers who had a rhythm going. Chauncey (12 pts, 5 asts) was actually getting having problems getting his against Shannon Brown, and J.R. Smith (3-13 FG, 1-10 3PA) was just off …

'Melo on Dime #25
ESPN was doing the celebrity roll call, and right after they showed Zac Efron sitting by himself tapping on his phone, Hugh Hefner was shown in his luxury box, slobbing on three 20-year-old blondes with amazing racks … Mark Jones in the studio at halftime: “There are two types of players in the playoffs; those that make things happen, and those that wonder what happened.” Dude, PLEASE stop trying to quote The Chronic and validate the ‘hood pass you don’t have … K-Mart (12 pts, 5 rebs) actually got worse as the game went on, and we don’t think it had anything to do with fatigue. He was Denver’s second-leading scorer in the first half, but in the second he was throwing up terrible shots that weren’t even coming close. By late in the fourth quarter, he was pretty much invisible and had been replaced by Linas Kleiza … Lakers fans are gonna want the League to upgrade Carmelo’s foul on Kobe in the fourth to a flagrant, and they might get their wish. ‘Melo kinda looked like he was going for the ball, but he also caught a lot of Kobe’s face in the process. Maybe the refs have been watching all the “Kobe and ‘Melo BFF” segments (Kobe’s own little psychological dig at LeBron, perhaps?) and didn’t think ‘Melo could have meant to hurt his buddy, but Stu Jackson will want to protect the League’s cash cows … If you want to hear the sound of 20,000 people ready to dump in their pants, turn to Cavs/Magic tonight and keep the volume up. The Cleveland crowd went from nervously energetic in Game 1 to cocky euphoria by the end of Game 2, and now — with their squad on the verge of elimination and TNT just waiting to break out the Ernest Byner, Michael Jordan and Willie Mays clips — the Q could play host to another heartbreaking loss for the city. LeBron has never been in a more important game in his life; bigger than any of his elimination games in years past because the Cavs were supposed to win the East this time. And if they win tonight? They have to do it all over again in Game 6, and then again if they make it to Game 7. How’s that for pressure? … We’re out like Hef’s bucket list …

This is the key for WCF/ECF play-offs: someone’s support cast has to show up:
Lakers: Ariza & Odom, Shannon Brown
Denver: Birdman, kleiza, JR
Magic: Rafer, Courtney Lee, Pietrus
Cavs: Only in the first half (Delonte) after that they all just witnessing
Great game by Lakers, hope Odom shows up next game. I’m taking a waiver that he won’t though.

@ tp, i don’t see anyone here saying LBJ is unstoppable. Orlando just caused him 8 turnovers last game. Even the usual posts here say that he’s good cause he gets officials to whistle for him.
Kobe has that unlimited range and moves, which destroys defenses cause he can light up from anywhere. LBJ still doesn’t have that despite a slight improvement in his shooting.

Anybody else notice every time the Nuggets started to make a run the refs would call a foul on Nene. So he would have to go to the bench then the Lakers would get back in the game. His fifth foul were he supposedly pushed off(Kobe does this every time he is posting)and got called for an offensive foul that was the start of that huge run they made to blow the game open. Nene has at least 3 calls a game that aren’t fouls. If you don’t believe watch some tape. Also his last foul that blocking foul even Marc Jackson and JVG were saying that was a charge on gasol and a HORRIBLE call.

What’s worse then all the bad officiating in this years playoffs? Everybody bitching about it, that’s what. Dime commentors tend to be bitchy on the regular but they putting in overtime since the playoffs started.
I agree, the officiating has been questionable at best but this is nothing new. It’s been like this for years. And as bad as it’s been I wouldn’t say that not one game this post season has been decided by the refs.
Bottom line is any team worth a shit should be able to win despite what the refs are doing. And that’s exactly what we’re seeing happen. The Magic are the better team and despite the refs they’re up 3-1. Denver will most likely even the series tomorrow so the team that comes to play Sunday in game 7 will win despite the refs.

He’s not “freak of nature”-type athlete but is crafty, smart and a born leader with elite scoring/playmaking skills at just 19 years old. Plus he has a 6-11 wingspan.
The Thunder would be smart to draft him.

I don’t see how everyone is saying the Cavs get every call. The Magic took 51 free throws in Game 3 (still more than the Cavs if you throw out Dwight’s attempts). And don’t get me started on how Turkolgu pushes off, then travels every time he drives.
May 28th, 2009 at 10:20 am
knock knock says:
ey Tom, you have to be blind if you watch the cavs and think they dont get every call. Lebron himself gets around 20ft a night if he isn’t shooting the ball well. And your argument that orlando got more ft OVERALL, that doesn’t make any sense. You would realize that at the end of regulation, lebron isn’t clutch, all he does is drive to the hoop and draws a phantom call. It’s happened in all the games this series so far. You have to be nuts or don’t know the rules of bball if you think otherwise.
* if you want to talk about turkolu traveling, what about the call last game where they called a travel, and instant replay shows he took only two steps. That same game is where we see Big Z take three steps on the way to drawing an and1. I’m not even going to begin with lebron’s crab dribble we see every game.

Just some observations:
I believe we saw LA’s 2008 BIG THREE come thru!
Just like the good ol’ times.
DIME : When one of the best tries to get his teammates involved or is trying to make plays…he aint TRYING.
He’s DOING it.
He’s making things EASIER. The BEST is bringin’ out the BEST.
He’s FACILITATIN’
And he probably wears NIKE.
Oh yeah, about the game:
As much as Dahntay was OFF in the paint. JR was OFF in outer space.
4Q – Denver was trailin’ as much as 11. When Nene left after his 6th, LA’s lead was down to 4. Then KMART came in and LO immediately went SHOPPING. And the lead NEVER got closer.
Thoughts on that: NAY NAY gotta get outta Pau way if need be. You can’t battle down low wth 5 PERSONALS DAWG. Against Pau!! Pau just got his Hollywood beard trim. C’mon – when’s the last time you’ve seen Pau shape up his scraggly beard?
The LADIES and STARS were there and he was obviously there to BALL.
MELO gave ‘em 31 points. But he also gave ‘em 5 TOs. LA EARNED 7 NET POINTS off of those turnovers. LA WON BY 9.
Did I say LA won by 9?
Well, KMART gift-wrapped 3-POINT PLAY to LO. Props to Odom by the way. So, yeah KMART gives LO the And-1. LA EARNED 3 NET POINTS off that play.
LA wins by 9.
Denver gave away 10 UNNECESSARY POINTS.
And THOSE are just case examples. I can get deeper but I won’t.
Chauncey : Took bad shots and bad fouls. But if those bad shots hit, he’s BIG SHOT. So I temper my criticism.
Linas played aiight.
With that said, they need more production from their Center and Shooting Guard positions. Nene, JR, Linas even…y’all gotta get buckets.
Finally – was there a CRUNCHTIME BLOCK PARTY nobody invited me to? I swore for a good minute, it was like the phrase “GET THAT ISH OUTTA HERE” was on REPEAT.
PAU BLOCKS MELO
LO BLOCKS KMART
KMART BLOCKS PAU
TREVOR BLOCKS MELO
One question though: Where were YOU at Andrew Bynum?
Nice win by the Lakers.
Toughie for the Nuggies.

After all the inconsistent reffin, we still got dudes bitchin about it like it’s new. Orlando gonna win despite em. Lotta nugget fans cryin about Nene gettin shafted. If some of you analysts watched games, you’d realize dude has got AT LEAST 5 fouls every game this series. It’s tired. Let it go. LA been shafted. Denver been shafted. Orlando been shafted. Cleveland just bein outplayed despite the refs carryin em.
LO and Fish were due for a game like this. REAL Laker fans know that those two are good for one game a series so as long as Kobe and Pau bring it every night, Fish and Lamar’ll get you a game.
Now to answer DIME’s question: The reason Kobe is called a facilitator in a game like last night is cuz there’s a difference in Kobe’s game when he’s tryin to set dudes up and when he’s just gettin Mamba buckets. Bron and DWade will just get 7-10 assists throughout the flow of their games cuz they always have the ball in their mitts, Kobe has to pick and choose cuz of our offense. My man took 13 shots and had 8 assists. Smart ball, made the adjustments. Double team comes, drag them outside, then find the cutter for a layin. We know kobe can hit the tough shots, but if you ain’t gotta kill yourself, then don’t. Use your teammates.
I’m out like the bitches who ain’t watchin hoops “cuz the reffin’s so bad”. Good riddance

@dime, melo was not in a rhythm last night. he was like 3-14 at the half, and closed with 9-23. plus he had 5 turnovers (most on team). that was not a rhythm game. however, you are correct about jr and bird running off home crowd emotion. opposite to most athletes, those two play better in thin air.
kmart was 6-15 and shooting j’s. give me a fucking break, kenyon. and while kmart shoots 15 shots, nene only takes 3. that is a PROBLEM.
i’d love to see a little more big shot out of chauncey. were five games into the series and hes really only had one killer game. bird was not bringing it either. dantay goes 2-8 and forgets hes not out there to shoot.
but the most wretched performance of the night belongs to jr. 1-10 with the 3ball. three of which came in the fourth, when we needed far better shots. atrocious performance. and you know hell be jacking the first chance he gets in game 6.

The lakerts on the other hand had the ball in kobe’s hands just about every trip down court and he made plays (scoring, passing, drawing fouls, etc.) there is no reason with the game on the line that K-mart, JR Smith, & Kleiza should be jacking bad shots…unacceptable

Nene’s last foul on Gasol?? if his big dumb ass wouldnt have flopped it wouldve been a no call but he flops and Gasol falls over him.. hey why not call it?? our homecourt we get the majority of the crunch time calls.. Shit once again Denver was at the line everytime i turned around in the first half so spare me that shit..
George Karl acting like Nene fouling out NEVER happens.. that man ALWAYS fouls out.. he IS NOT A SMART BASKETBALL PLAYER.. he saw Phil whine now he whining.. which if funny because Jones plays borderline Dirty, Melo lives at the line and some hard fouls aint even called against his team.. Shit Bynum?? 2 fouls before the 1st is out.. Gasol?? cant go straight up with Billups always a call.. so its both ways..
I didnt hear you guys complaining in Denver when Jones was allowed to D-Bo Kobe a good couple of times.. just cuz what you pricks want to happen aint going to happen quit with the favored treatment shit.. your game 2 win on OUR HOME COURT?? oh yeah lane violation, missed kickball, foul on Ariza.. all that went uncalled so spare me “Denver got screwed in the 4th”.. this series shouldve been over..
like i said i havent one game yet where i say “damn the refs is giving it to us” and we got the second best record in the league..
Shit Melo close lined Kobe and nothing came from it.. Shit let Artest do it = Flagrant.. let ANYONE touch Lebron in that manner = Flagrant..

as much as i hate the lakers, they will go on to win this series and win orlando in the finals. i keep thinking they are soft, but then they play like last night. they are very bipolar and don’t really have an identity, they just somehow find a way to win. and i hate that.
as you look at the box score and see that kmart shot the ball more than kobe, that right there is not a good sign. and seeing jr smith go 3-13 is also not a good sign. like someone else already said, if you are counting on jr smith to have a big game to win then you have already lost.
along with k-mart jacking it up 15 times, he went to the ft line 0 times. that tells you he fell in love with that ugly jump shot of his. that is not what the nuggets need.

Ian says:
why do you guys call gasol soft??? because hes a finess player not just dumb power that can only dunk like howard? because he can actually hit from outside 5 feet unlike shaq? dude got memphis (fuckin memphis) to the playoffs 3 times and helped kobe finally get out of the first round. tell me whats soft about that?
another one i like is when some of you call hedo soft. isnt he clutch as hell?
btw good win for the lakers k dizzle you still think fish is good?

Ian – one more ring and he’ll have more chips as a starter than any point guard since Magic. Fish set the tone last night. You saw it. Went to the hole hard. Hit some shots. That’s all i want.
And you know why ‘they’ call Pau soft. He ain’t. Hedo definitely ain’t soft. Tony Parker soft lol jk
Hopin we can catch Denver off guard tomorrow. Kobe didn’t waste too much energy last night and his body should be adjusted to the altitude now so I’m hopin we can dead this series in 6 cuz Orlando gonna wrap it up tonight

im not going to start on fish lol but longley has more rings than the admiral ewing and hakeem was he the best center of the 90s. dont answer u know im messing.
you are right i still dont get the soft label on both those players.

Yeah the rest would be good.. Honestly we killed the double team last night with Kobe pulling it out to the 3pt line so hopefully when we get to Denver we can use that.. And Bynum showed up! well for 1 quarter.. but Browns D on Billups is what did it IMO.. if we can keep Billups and Smith quiet in Denver we should be good.. but thats pretty damn DIFFICULT..
Kobe was a LEADER last night.. setting up the teammates.. there was that sequence in the 4th when Gasol was about to pass it off AGAIN and Kobe walked off and told him to take that shit.. THATS HOW YOU DO IT!! MAKE him man up!!
@ Ian
Gasol aint soft but when players are allowed to muscle him he has the tendency to disappear on offense.. and while he wants the ball he dont get mad and DEMAND the ball.. like i said in the 4th Kobe had to tell him in the middle of the game to take that shit in there hard.. while i love Gasol for his skill set, i like Bynum more because he is hardheaded and WANTS to be the Alpha dog.. you see him when he got the green light?? that boy doesnt pass and he can score..
That soft shit came from last years finals when Odom and Gasol vanished.. IMO Odom did indeed vanish while Perkins was able to physically abuse Gasol worst than an Abu Ghraib prisoner..

Oh and JR Smith has to be one of the most annoying people on God’s green earth. He’s nothing more than a streak shooter who heats up on occasion. Sorry piece of sh!t. Where was that chicken dance last night? Probably in the same place you left your jumpshot. 3-13. 1-10 from 3. Smh…

Once agin, Lebron one ups Kobe. 8 turnovers to 7. Oh yeah, but the lakers won
@ Giuseppe – Cavs win by double digits….wrote it down, but don’t believe it. Unless you can tell me how writin that down helps them defend the Hedo/Dwight – Hedo/Shard pick n roll…

regardless of the calls, the 1-12 FGs for the Nugz between the end of the 3rd and the start of the 4th is what killed them.

Refs killed the game for the nuggets…atleast the nuggs are taking it to the basket and still getting no calls.. lakers are getting to many touch foul that their being bailed…LET THE PLAYERS MAKE SHOTS AND WIN THE GAME!!!!!! It was close the whole time, its sad that they called that silly fouls in the last quarter that decided the game… Lamar and Pau were laying Eggs all game long in the paint…Nuggs will bounce back at home…

Lady Luck says:
Great win by the Lakers last night. The Lakers spread the ball around better, and was able to get big games from the bench. Nuggets were not. Their shooting was bad and execution worse. The refs were not the reason for the loss. That’s a copout. Players have to play through it and adjust to how the game is being called. Every game there are bogus calls. EVERY GAME.

That was a good TEAM win right there.Kobe just fell back throughout the game.He was waiting to take over but his squad was balling and he knew he could save it for the next game.Thats why Im not so confident for Denver now.I got Kobe having a 40+ game next.So they better be ready.@Lakeshow-I seen that play u was talking about with Pau.He was ready to give it to Kobe while the shot clock was running down and Kobe gave him the motherfucker u a all star look and Pau had to take that shit strong.I think that last foul on Nene was a walk or no call over a foul anyday. But that aint the reason they lost.
May 28th, 2009 at 6:42 pm
LakeShow84 says:
@ DOC
that was a good team win.. damn the leagues rules are actually taking away from the superstars aint they?? now superstars can RARELY score over 40 and get a win.. u move the ball and ur team plays up to it you win.. go figure..
Ill say that was probably one of the better displays of Kobe’s leadership i have ever seen.. Even that wide open 3 he fed Odom on was almost unbelievable.. i doubt he’ll do that shit again though lol he saved his energy now he will probably come out gunning in game 6.. lets just hope he does it @ a high FG%..
But if we keep bodies around the basket in game 6 we will be alright.. Game 4 and the beginning parts of game 6 them foos were CLEANING up the offensive rebounds.. i thought that killed us in game 4.. If Gasol, Fisher and Odom come out and do the thang its a wrap..
@ IAN
Perkins did not outplay Gasol.. he raped him lol jk no excuses i know.. but Gasol might be 50 times more SKILLED than Bynum but Bynum is WAY tougher.. and i likes that shit.. even though Bynum needs to at least act like HE IS GOING FOR THE BALL!! WTF!? dude just gives hard fouls off top now.. he got confused along the way lol
May 28th, 2009 at 7:31 pm
doc says:
@lakeshow-Bynum fucked Jones up the first play.He aint taking no prisoners lol.Its like Kobe told him to just fuck everybody up around the basket.Good coaching move Kob.

Jon says:
WHY???
…do people say kobe was facilitating his teammates when he just didn’t play that well. kobe tried to take over in the 4th as usual but went 0-5. If his teammates didn’t play well and bailed him out, the lakers would be down 3-2 right now.
