Duke’s Propaganda Video
Coach K must have hated having to make something like this. First of all, it’s not really true. All the talk about “playing fast,” “having the freedom to just play,” and “having a little bit of an advantage going into the pro’s” feels like it’s being read off a script. Even if a PR agency told everyone at Duke basketball what recruits want to hear, it’s almost laughable given that the Blue Devils’ reputation is the exact opposite of what they say in this clip.
Where’s Greg Paulus in this?

Whoa! Hater in the house! I agree with lifep. If you knew anything about Duke basketball you’d know that there’s nothing in that video that is untrue. If you’re going to be a respectable sports writer you can’t just pick a team you dislike and bash them. It’s very unprofessional and it really makes readers question your ability and credibility as a sports writer. Dime, I say fire him.

Sorry rudderband man but you’re a little confused. Sportswriters careers are based on opinions. It’s sportscasters and broadcasters who should be impartial but even then that’s hardly the case.

Coach T says:
Andrew Katz, I respectfully disagree with your comments. Duke runs a particular motion offense that is designed for dribble penetration, based on the player reading the defender and reacting with the proper individualistic move. They rarely run offensive sets except out of timeouts and end of game situations. Of course that depends on the talent. Coach K definately made adjustments to his system when he had Reddick. Then his system became more of a set system with tons of screens, thus freeing Reddick. Yiu don’t see Paulus because he did not have the skills to thrive in Coach K’s system. Jason Williams is the poster child for the kind of player Coach K really wants for his motion offense. Can you say John Wall!

Opinions are one thing but in this case we are not talking about opinions. Duke does play fast, Duke players do have freedom, and the man-to-man defense that Duke plays does give it’s players an advantage in that aspect at the next level. All of those are facts that can be concluded from watching a Duke basketball game. There are no opinions in this post. There are just facts that the writer is ignorantly attempting to discredit.

You may be right. Problem is even opinions can be wrong. It’s Andrew Katz’s opinion that this video does that convey the true style of Duke basketball. Yours is that is does.

Seriously I would respect Dime a hell of a lot more if they fired ANDREW KATZ! Everyone is entitled to their opinions but his simply are not educated. Not even a Duke fan but since they are on tv all the time I watch a ton of their games and everything on that video is 100% TRUE!!! In reading Dime every day it seems that Katz seriously hates Duke for some reason. I know a lot of people do but he takes it to another level I guess b/c he has the platform to do so. I would hope that the people that run Dime pay attention to his articles and realize that he really doesn’t do his homework. He did an article a little while ago that said Perkins doesn’t cry although the actual players in the league voted he was one of the worse and anybody that’s seen a Celtics game knows this. Sorry hate to vent on that guy because this was too obvious. I’ve never seen so many people defend Duke in my life so you know he’s gotta be way off on this.

I am going to disagree with Mr. Katz as well. Greg Paulus is not an NBA player but they have had the cream of crop go through that system in years past. Lately its slacking but lets be honest playing pressure man to man D is what the League is about or at least in the playoffs. Also like other posts have pointed out they do run an offensive system that is losely based off Mike D Antoni’s run and gun system when he was with the Suns. But to me I also agree with Mr Katz because lets be honest its rediculous for coach k to believe that college basketball is close to the L. The guys in the L are WORLD CLASS ATHLETES. Guys in college are Good Athletes. But I do kind of agree Andy must just really hate on Duke or something…

You guys spend far too much time looking for problems in someone’s writing.

I wrote that the “Blue Devils’ reputation” is the opposite of what they say in this clip. I never said that Coach K runs a system that isn’t pro-friendly. I just said that their delivery of those “selling points” felt a little bit stale.

Well I agree with Mr katz. I totally understand teamball-it’s the only kind I wanna watch-but lets get real here: to say the K wants to put ppl in the best position to be a pro is bull and you all know it. He’ll play a guy at a position that will hurt is draft stock as long as it seems to work for the team no matter what. Redick is the exception not the rule. Josh Mcroberts, Hansbrough, even Singlar all should have been playing their natural positions to maximize their draft potentional, and frankly they’re not/haven’t. We all see how that helped Hansbrough’s draft postion. (He’s not a center on a good day). Also, not quite sure how “free” players are allowed to play. Don’t get me, I’m not saying all of this is wrong. If you commit to play somewhere, you put your team’s needs first but lets not act like what Andy is saying is wrong. It’s been a while since Duke produced a good pro. Booz is great, Brand is too when not injured but c’mon ppl! Stop drinking the Duke Kool Aid so much that you bash a guy for keeping it real.

Ok, couple things here.
1) Did you watch the video? Coach K said “If you come from a man-to-man (defense) program you’re going to have a little bit of an advantage going into the pros”. If you’ve ever seen a Duke game you know that there aren’t many (if any) teams that play better man-to-man defense with their intensity, pressure, rotations, etc. He didn’t say “If you go to Duke I’ll make you a great pro, period.”
2) Hansbrough didn’t play for Duke. Sooooooooo… Ummmmmm… Yeah…

I’m a Carolina fan, but I have to admit that the video wasn’t too far off the mark of what the Duke program tries to achieve. The NBA preparedness was a little, no a lot off the mark. I didn’t hear him touting the pro careers of Laetner, Avery, Ferry, Shelden Williams, JJ Redick etc.. and honestly if your tying NBA success to Boozer, and Jones, Boozer a late second round pick who had upside, and Jones kind of a no show, your going to have some problems recruiting especially with a school down the road who has seen players have tremendous success in the NBA.

heavy d says:
Duke had more alumni on NBA rosters this season than anyone else. They don’t have the biggest individual stars, but if I’m not mistaken the top 4 players at this time consist of 1 Marquette man (Dwayne Wade) and 3 guys who didn’t go to college (Kobe, Lebron, and Dwight Howard), so no school can really brag that they’ll make you a superstar. The point is that going to Duke doesn’t kill your prospects of playing in the NBA if you have the talent to play in the NBA.
The uptempo offense is what Coach K wants to run and wants to recruit players for. Andrew Katz statement was “it’s almost laughable given that the Blue Devils’ reputation is the exact opposite of what they say in this clip.” Mr. Katz that is why they made the video. If people didn’t have the wrong idea they wouldn’t need the video.

Schickelgruber-K says:
This rat you call “koach k” is not as perceived by many.
He is what we call “phony bologna”, “Al Goreish”, aka “Ole Schickelgruber” himself. I’ll give it to him. He’s one guy with “class.” Class minus the first two letters.
An interesting discussion occurred recently. What triggered it was the news conference held by UNC concerning the decision of Lawson and Ellington to join the NBA Draft. Roy Williams, their coach, was sitting between both of them. Williams said he thought they were making the right decision not to return to school.
Now, Duke has had several players who also left college early to go professional. The most recent example is Henderson.
Here is the point. Have you EVER seen Krzyhjdjk439090fdjshski hold a conference for Henderson or any other kid that’s played for him?
I’ll answer my own question, because getting the truth from the dookies concerning “Schickelberger” is never in the cards. The answer is a resounding no. Furthermore, you will not see a conference in the future when a player decides to leave Duke early.
The truth is, K is a narcissist. It’s always “about him.”
Perhaps, you would like to do a bit of reading concerning this “rat.”
Maybe “K” and his wife would do better and quit whining and complaining about people “booing” them. Simply concentrate on playing basketball…and not as in “Villanova.”
Heil.
