Breaking: Wolves/Wizards trade involves Randy Foye, 5th pick

Randy Foye (photo. Jeff Forney)
The Wolves have agreed to trade Randy Foye and Mike Miller to the Wizards for Etan Thomas, “Buckets” Pecherov, Darius Songaila and the 5th pick in Thursday’s NBA Draft — which gives the Wolves the 5th and 6th pick overall.
The Wizards were in the market for a PG in the draft, and were particularly high on Stephen Curry and Tyreke Evans, as well as PF Jordan Hill. Foye is the same kind of combo guard they can pair with Gilbert Arenas in a versatile backcourt, and Miller obviously brings shooting.
As for Minnesota, they can address their need in the backcourt by taking somebody like Curry or Tyreke, plus get another guard or get a wing, i.e. DeMar DeRozan. Assume the first four picks go as expected, and Blake Griffin, Hasheem Thabeet, James Harden and Ricky Rubio are off the board. Who would you take with the 5th and 6th picks if you’re the Wolves?

Crazy 5 for the Wiz but do they have any bigmanz anymore? At least Minnesota may be able to get a draft right this time

Yeah saw these on yahoo a while back. Not sure what I think of that big one. Seems as though washington added more offensive minded guys when they already don’t ahve enough basketballs to go around for caron, agent aero, and jamison. I thought they needed an interior presence or defensive-minded people?
And Minny gave up a former lottery pick who seemed to be starting to come around for another lottery pick in a weak draft? Gave up 2 of their offensive guys? We’ll see maybe there is more wheeling and dealing in the future of these 2 teams.
They could always try and package the 5th and 6th pick and some crap for the 1st pick? Yeah right.

LFan says:
Good deal for the Wiz. They needed a point, and Foye seems to be moving himself from the ‘trash’ to ‘alright’ pile. Plus Miller is a legit shooter which is always nice.
The draft is weaksauce, so you could have the 1,2,3,4 and 5 picks and still come away with trash. Blake Griffin is gonna be worse than Kevin Love in the league, and the players behind him on the mock drafts are overrated too. The only legit top 10 talent is Harden, everyone else is a waste of breath. Anyone who can trade out of their picks should.

i think wiz got the better deal. they didn’t give up much, the number 5 in this draft is nothing unless rubio falls that far, which he won’t. etan thomas and brandon haywood never got along. Foye is coming around, and while they didn’t gain any defensive assets, they didn’t give up much either.

Wiz for sure got the better end of this deal, but it’s all irrelevant if Arenas doesn’t get healthy. I think this draft has Blake Griffin, a bunch of solid and unspectacular point guards and not much else.

Heckler...formerly 'Yallallreadyknow' says:
how does this trade help the Wiz? I don’t see it.
Who is going to start….Miller or Foye? Since both cannot start (since you have Arenas and Butler), then they have essentially traded the #5 pick for a bench player.
Etan Thomas and Mike James salaries were going to come off the books. Ernie Grunfield should know to hold on to that commodity…especially as the 2010 free agent off-season is approaching.
Where does this leave Nick Young?
Who is going to rebound for the Wizards next year without Songalia and Thomas?
Randy Foye and Mike Miller are more valuable than a #12 pick in any draft; but seriously…..are they more valuable than the FIFTH BEST PLAYER in any draft?!!?
yall let me know….
June 23rd, 2009 at 10:48 pm
MattO says:
@heckler:
ummm…Foye was the #7 pick in his draft class, and Miller was the #5, so I’d say, hell yeah they’re more valuable than the 5th best player in a lotta drafts…
I think this is a great deal for the wiz, whoever they were gonna get at #5 wouldn’t have contributed immediately anyways, and I remember reading quotes from gil and caron that they would rather trade the pick for somebody who would contribute right away (ie. foye+miller)

There’s a strong chance that Ricky Rubio will be on the board at #5. If that’s the case, they need to take Rubio and Tyreke Evans. Sick sick sick sick backcourt.
June 23rd, 2009 at 11:41 pm
ricky says:
I’m a Rubio fan, but i don’t see Rubio fitting in Minnesota. I don’t see Jefferson and Love running down the court. Of course if Minnesota trades Jefferson for Amare then it’s a different story as Rubio has someone to run with, plus Amare won’t complain about not getting the ball enough cause he’ll probably be the only scoring threat in Minnesota.

"Tha Boddy" Doin It For Love says:
Great deal for the Wizards, Miller can back up Young at the 2 and Butler at the 3 and he can spot start if one of them gets injured.Foye allows Arenas to go into “Agent Zero” mode without giving up a ball handler.Gilbert said he wanted to be more of a pure PG and the Wizards got him a dead eye shooter in miller who they got on the cheap…Can’t wait to catch the green line up to see them

WOW….I did not expect this i like the trade but then i dont…mike miller is a vet who brings in more shooting i dont know to much about foye but i do know they traded for jarvis crintinton last season so they didnt really need another point..I think the wizards seriously thought about what would be on the board when that number #5 came around..I think harden whould have been a better pick up then miller but he most likly would have been picked by the number 5 spot..

@ Hekler…I dont think the Fifth best player in this draft will be better than BOTH Miller and Foye…Also one of those two players allows you to move other players for trades…Now if the Suns want Butler for A’mare, the Wiz can deal…They got a Wings out the ass now…This trade helps the WIZ…
June 24th, 2009 at 12:00 pm
nowwhatyo says:
i like the trade. the wiz can start either foye or miller with arenas. the other one will come off the bench in a 6th man role. anyone they could have added in the draft at the 5 spot will not have the immediate impact they are looking for.
with the wolves having the 5 and 6 picks, they can definitely draft their starting back court of the future. 2 players will drop to them, whether it’s rubio, tyreke, harden, or curry. the wolves were gonna suck this year regardless. at least it looks like they are set to possibly turn things around and go in the right direction, because they weren’t going anywhere with foye and miller.

June 24th, 2009 at 12:42 pm
ldawg23 says:
@QQ…and if you dont think Miller+Foye (former lottery picks) for ONE lottery pick isnt good basketball Your high as a kite…If the Wiz wish to deal Caron for Amare now, they can..They have a decent Wing replacement…They’re trying to win now..and holding on to cash to MAYBE sign a superstar player, that likely wont happen. Not to many free agents are really trying to hop on the Wiz

horrible trade. stephen curry would be better than mike miller and randy foye. You do NOT want randy foye on your team. Mike miller is a beast, but wouldn’t you want curry on the rookie scale..AT least?
June 24th, 2009 at 1:31 pm
ldawg23 says:
The trade was made for TWO reasons…To keep there current core happy…KNOWN of them wanted a rookie
With two quality players, not STUDS, they could possible make a trade down the line…If they somehow turn Miller or Foye, or any other player on there roster into a Bosh or Amare or someone like this , this trade is great…This trade isnt just about current players, its giving them flexibility to trade for others as well…
