Clip of the Day: Who’s Real (remix)
As a lifelong New Yorker and an almost-my-entire-lifelong hip-hop fan, I basically grew watching as various crews had their turn atop the lucrative New York hip-hop throne. From Wu-Tang to Mobb Deep to the Roc and eventually to Dip Set and G-Unit, the list of rappers who have dominated hip-hop from the New York area is long and diverse. However no group seemed to have more of an impact on the streets than the Ruff Ryders reign. Maybe it was DMX’s slightly psychotic (Ok, maybe a little bit more than slightly) tendency to bark on every track, or maybe it was the sheer awesomeness of watching 3 people on an ATV doing wheelies down city blocks, but whatever it was when it came to the Ruff Ryders, it was love at first listen. So when I heard that they had more or less broken apart (mostly due to the fact that DMX couldn’t keep himself out of jail for more than 2 days), I was a little saddened.
However, through all the controversy, crowd favorite Jadakiss always managed to keep himself relevant. And with his long-awaited album finally dropping earlier this year, his hit single “Who’s Real?” provided the perfect platform for a Ruff Ryders reunion. The album version featured Swizz Beatz and OJ Da Juiceman, but for the remix all the original members of the clique came together and helped to create a street anthem sure to last throughout the summer. Maybe it’s just me, but something about hearing DMX’s neurotic barking over a Swizz Beatz track just warms the heart. Now if only we could get Cam and Jimmy to talk again…

Very nastolgic, but it is hott too. Damn I was forgetting how much I liked them when they were popping. Hopefully DMX will leave the pipe alone and instead start lighting up the mic again…
