Live @ NBA Draft ‘09: Picks 11-15

Tyler Hansbrough
Griffin to L.A., Thabeet to Memphis, Harden to OKC, Tyreke to Sacramento, Rubio to Minnesota, Flynn to Minnesota, Curry to Golden State, Hill to New York, DeRozan to Toronto, Jennings to Milwaukee. That’s the top 10. Moving on…
BURTON: Terrence Williams goes 11th to Jersey. Stu Scott tells us that T-Will doesn’t watch ESPN, “so I guess he hasn’t seen his highlights.” Because there are no other sports channels, obviously. Bilas says “He has a chance to be really, really good” for about the 4th time tonight about a prospect. One of the highlights shows Williams shaking Bilas’ hand, and Van Gundy asks, “Why is he sucking up to you?” Bilas comes with the Duke d-bag response: “They all do.”
KATZ: I’m convinced that Bilas loves T-Will as much as he does because Williams is the first player to recognize that Bilas exists. Williams made a habit out of going up to Bilas and Dickie V after games during the season, which is now resulting in a mild steam-fest.
As Austin wrote earlier in the Vince Carter trade post, Williams became an even better option for the Nets after the trade. He’ll help to shore up their backcourt. If Lawrence Frank wants to start Devin Harris and Courtney Lee together, Williams will offer a much-needed perimeter defender off the bench.
NBA GM’s are just going down the list of Dime/Levi’s Draft Suite attendees and picking accordingly…
BURTON: Williams in his interview says, “I learned great under Coach P, so, um, I can learn great in New Jersey.” I think he was trying to say he’s a quick study or that he’s coachable or something. I want to be in the gym watching Williams and Courtney Lee fighting for the two-guard spot in Jersey. Both those dudes are diesel and tough as hell.
KATZ: An NBA rep just filled us in that Brandon Jennings is, in fact, in the building. He’s going to be available for media in a couple of minutes. That’s wonderful. He gets to answer questions from a bunch of overweight white guys, but doesn’t get to shake hands with the overweight white guy.
BURTON: After listening to him speak and learning that he’s “an accomplished junior golfer,” I mean, was there any doubt Gerald Henderson was going to Duke? Let’s just say he’s not a typical Pitt or Memphis guy.
My Pacers take … TYLER HANSBROUGH?!? OK, first of all, I’m in the camp that thinks Hansbrough will be a good pro. However, he’s not what Indiana needed. They could have used help in the frontcourt, but they need guys who can score. Hansbrough has a nice jumper and can get to the line, but I would have wanted a low-post guy who you can just dump it into and let him get buckets. Good player, but not exactly what they needed. I would have liked to see them get a PG, maybe Jrue Holiday, but on the same token I can see where Hansbrough is a safer pick because you know what you’re getting with him. (The crowd chanted “Overrated” at Tyler, by the way.)
The Suns take Earl Clark 14th, but … Stern says that Brandon Jennings IS here, and BJ comes from backstage to shake Stern’s hand. So we’re doing late handshakes now? That’s good news if I ever get drafted, because I’m late for everything.
KATZ: I’m hearing a rumor on the floor that the proposed Amar’e to Golden State deal will include the Stephen Curry pick (Steph going to Phoenix) and the Earl Clark pick (Earl going to GS).
BURTON: Detroit rescues Austin Daye from the green room, leaving Jrue Holiday as the surprise Last Man Sitting. Stu Scott makes a comparison between Daye and John Stockton that should have stopped before it came out of his mouth. Earlier today one of the readers said Daye could be a Tayshaun Prince-type, so now he has a good mentor for that. He just seems way too soft, especially for Deeeee-troit basket-baaaaaaalll!!
BURTON: Vitale picks Curry for Rookie of the Year, then says the Thunder are dumb for not taking him at #3. I wouldn’t go all that far.
