NBA Trade Rumor: David Lee to the Pistons

The Pistons have been one of the teams popping up the most frequently in trade rumors over the last month or so. First, we heard that they were thinking about dealing up in order to snare B.J. Mullens within the Top 10. Now, the Pistons are rumored to be in the hunt for David Lee in a sign-and-trade with the Knicks.
A short note in Sunday’s Boston Globe said the New York Knicks are “trying to work out a sign-and-trade for power forward David Lee in a cost-cutting move.”
And since Lee, picked 30th by the Knicks in the 2005 draft, is an athletic frontcourt player coming off a career-best season, it figures the Pistons would be interested.
MLive.com detailed a blow-by-blow offseason plan that Joe Dumars could follow to lock up one of the major power forwards on the market this year. In this scheme, Lee is the Pistons last option if they aren’t able to outbid Utah for Paul Millsap, or fork over enough cash to get Carlos Boozer in town.
That plan also assumes that the Knicks would go for a package of Amir Johnson and the 15th pick in exchange for Lee.
If you could have one of those three guys, knowing that they’ll all command different money, who would you choose?

I think Carlos Boozer is the one I would choose in this situation. It looks like he’s trying to get out of Utah and would probably be a good fit in D’antoni’s run and gun offense.

I just happen to catch an episode of Family Feud with NBA players VS. NBA Moms.
Dwight, Chris Bosh, Richard Jefferson, David Lee, Cuttino Mobley and Grant Hill are playing against their respective moms. Sorta weird these peeps beating up on their moms. Youtube it out.

I think the question was meant for the who should the Pistons want out of those three. The Knicks are looking to shed money not pick up a big contract like Boozer’s. Also I don’t think Boozer would be a good fit in D’Antoni’s system at all.
If I’m Dumars I’m trying to get Lee. He should be cheaper and just as effective (if not more) as Boozer without being the diva that Booz is. Milsap would be great too but they already paid Maxiell and I don’t see the Jazz letting him go.

karizmatic says:
@ Spliff,
Oh I wasn’t reading it right. Yeah in the trade as it stands. I would take Lee, but looking at the Pistons roster I don’t think Lee would be the right fit. I’d still go with Boozer. I think they are going to need someone with a more developed post game than what Lee has.

jzsmoove says:
The Knicks would not allow fan favorite Lee to walk. He is a very hard worker and someone that every team needs to win. This trade is not gonna happen.

I feel you on Boozer’s post game being better than Lee’s but Booz is just such a diva. The Pistons don’t need another “me first” player after the AI debacle. Lee’s numbers are similar to Boozer’s and he’s not injury prone like Booz. If money, attitude and team chemistry are not an issue for the Pistons then yeah they should go after Booz.

To answer Yoooo’s question, What does Lee do that Maxiell doesn’t?
They do the same stuff, Lee just does them better if you go based off stats. Score (16.4 to 5.8), rebound (11.7 to 4.2), and assist (2.1 to 0.3). Blocks and steals are similar. Also believe it or not but Maxiell has been making more money than Lee so seems like the Knicks are getting a bigger bang for their buck. Maybe if Maxiell (18.1 minutes per game) had more playing time than Lee (34.9 mpg) than this might be a different story.

Yeah I feel you on Boozer’s attitude, but that has a lot to do with the attitude of the remaining Pistons as well. I think the debacle last season had as much to do with the Pistons players not wanting to play with Iverson as it did with Iverson being a me first player. The Pistons need to do some major re tooling anyway. Namely not re-signing Rasheed.

Yoooo says:
Maxiell doesnt get anywhere the minutes Lee does and Lee’s stats are inflated based on the system he plays in. He doesnt get those #’s on ANY other team in the L. Well on 2nd thought maybe Toronto…

johnsacrimoni says:
Lee is taller and way more athletic than Maxiell. He also has a decent mid-range shot and hits his free throws. His rebounding prowess speaks for itself. I wouldn’t expect him to be my number 1 guy or anything, but he’s got a lot more talent than Maxiell and can be a solid #3 guy.
June 8th, 2009 at 2:20 pm
johnsacrimoni says:
I like Maxiell but let’s face the facts: he’s a career backup. There’s a reason he doesn’t start-his offensive game is very limited, he’s not athletic, and he’s a poor defender. He is what he is, a high-energy hustle guy.

@LaMont:
“If you can get Amir and the 15th for Lee, what’s there to think about?”
— I’m not sure where to begin. The 15th pick is pretty much worthless, as is Amir Johnson. If you’re comparing this to absolutely nothing (if Lee walks), then I guess it’s better than nothing. But only barely.

If the knicks are giving up david lee for amir johnson and a 15th pick…..i think they would consider the 5th pick along with a expiring contract from the wizards…on the other hand maybe earl clark or harden would work out better for the wizards

Boozer is not the kind of player that fits in Joe D’s team effort system (see iverson). Milsap gives almost as much as Boozer without the crappy attitude.
The Pistons should sign Villanueva and call it an offseason. A starting line of Rip, Stuckey, Prince, Chuck V and who ever plays the 5 would be a good fresch start for the pistons.

What Mike D’antni’s system? I don’t see a system. The Knicks play regular basketball as everyone else. Everyone’s talking about a system. Now the offense D’antoni had in Phoenix that was run n gun, but this just normal basketball. And Maxiell isn’t athletic? Did not watch him play. For a guy his weight, he sure does the most athletic and powerful dunks in the NBA.
June 8th, 2009 at 4:11 pm
Yoooo says:
Maxiell is definitely athletic dog. he’s WAY longer than Lee especially his wingspan. And I dont ever see Lee being a starter on a Championship team. He has great heart and hustle… But uh, what else does he do, really? He’s not some stonecold scorer. He’s a glorified garbage guy. Albeit a TINY bit more athletic than the average. He’s more heart than anything.

How long is Amir’s contract? If it goes past 2010, the Knicks may have no interest. As a knick fan, I love what Lee brings and will miss him. He would be great off the bench or paired with Bosh and Lebron in the front court. Knicks still need a shot blocking C and a starting PG but might find both in the draft if they get two picks or in a trade with Memphis to move up to the 2 spot.
If I was a Detroit fan I would rank Milsap first, Boozer second, Lee third. I think Boozer ends up on NJ in a sign and trade, Milsap is re-signed and Lee, well I am not sure yet what happens to him but I hope he stays with the Knicks and Eddie Curry, Jeffries and Nate are gone soon.

The Pistons should trade Rip Hamilton,Walter Herman, and second round pick to Houston for Mcgrady period!! Then do the David Lee deal, and next year go after Chris Bosh very aggressive like. And in the near future try and find a “real”PG if Stucky doesn’t develope..Hope Joe is reading this..DO IT JOE!!

CMAC says:
why trade for tracy when he is just as bad and old as iverson pistons need to hang onto prince, stuckey, and just do an entire roster clean out!!! who cares if they land in the lottery a couple of years the team now isnt going to win any rings even with lee, milsap, especially boozer one of the biggest B*tches in the L. Pistons should have drafted melo or Bosh when they had the chance in 04 but they went wif Darko hahahaha i mean melo and chauncey are ballin pretty well together at the moment aren’t they!
