Name that trophy: The NBA needs an MVP makeover

Dirk's car-salesman look

There’s a debate going in Major League Baseball circles about re-naming the Cy Young award (best pitcher in each league) after Satchel Paige, the reasons for which you can read HERE.

Taking it to basketball, it’s time to look at some of the NBA’s trophies and consider re-naming them, or giving them a name in the first place. The Finals MVP just got the Bill Russell stamp this year, so that’s not going anywhere. And the Red Auerbach Coach of the Year trophy will never change, no matter how many rings Phil Jackson collects. Read More »

Tyler Hansbrough Could Be A Lottery Pick

UNC's Tyler Hansbrough

If Tyler Hansbrough ends up being selected within the top 15 picks on Thursday, he’ll have leapfrogged Stephen Curry, Jonny Flynn, and every other prospect as having made the biggest jump up the draft board.

Even if Psycho-T doesn’t have the upside of a Terrence Williams, Earl Clark, James Johnson, or B.J. Mullens, some teams are coming to see his high-octane effort as a unique, valuable skill in the League. Read More »

Rubio falling, Jonny Flynn rising, and what’s up with Thabeet?

Hasheem Thabeet

Solidly wedged between Blake Griffin and Ricky Rubio in all the pre-draft hype, Hasheem Thabeet has mostly flown under the radar during all the workouts, combines and rumors of the past couple months. Maybe it’s because he’s a lock to either go 2nd to Memphis or, at the worst, 3rd to Oklahoma City — the second-most secure lock this side of Blake going #1 — but there’s hardly been any intrigue surrounding the 7-3 beanstalk. More NBA Draft rumors; is Jersey getting Vince’s replacement?

Vince Carter

Lots of NBA Draft stuff populating the news this weekend, be it players moving up or down the board in this last stretch of workouts, teams making promises, or draft-related trade rumors. The Nets have been one of the toughest teams to figure out. Ever since they landed the 11th pick in the Lottery, we’ve seen them connected to eveyrybody from DeMar DeRozan to James Johnson to Tyler Hansbrough. There was even a short-lived rumor that had the Nets trading Devin Harris to Memphis for the No. 2 pick; its seems the only position where NJ satisfied is at center with Brook Lopez. Read More »

Kobe rules the universe, and LeBron may get All-Star help

Kobe Bryant, Dime #39

In the last seven years, has there been a post-championship NBA superstar who’s done the “Top of the world!!!” thing bigger than Kobe has done it over the last week? Think about it: Tim Duncan pretty much disappeared from public view immediately after the Spurs won in ’03, ’05 and ’07. None of the ’04 Pistons really blew up nationally after their title win. D-Wade‘s rise to superduperstardom was more of a gradual process after the Heat won in ’06. Even Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce spread their Big Swingin’ D moments out in their post-championship summer. Kobe? He’s been EVERYWHERE since the Lakers won. Read More »
