Working out for the Knicks yesterday, Mike D’Antoni told Steph that he doesn’t think they can draft him because “Allan Houston doesn’t want to be the second best shooter in Knicks’ history.”

I don’t think Mike Brown has anyone fooled into thinking he’s a great X’s and O’s coach; you can see that for yourself in any Cavs game you’ve ever watched. He’s clearly a solid defensive coach, but personally, I don’t remember ever seeing him ever draw up a play for his team – that duty falls almost exclusively to assistant John Kuester. And at best, Brown’s offense seems like it’s 90% clear-outs for LeBron, which when you have LeBron James on your roster is fine, to a point. Having very little offensive direction proved to be a killer in the Conference Finals, as the Magic were able to pack it in and bottle up LeBron, and it seemed like Brown had no answers.

The two biggest basketball stories from Wednesday revolved around coaches. In the NBA, the Kings ended their search by hiring Paul Westphal as head coach, and in college, USC’s Tim Floyd resigned his post just as it looked like the ugliest parts of the O.J. Mayo saga were coming to light … True story: Last week some of us in the office were talking about the Kings’ top three candidates (Tom Thibodeau, Kurt Rambis, Westphal) and when Paul’s name came up, people actually laughed. Here’s what I don’t get: While you can’t make it five minutes into a Ricky Rubio argument without somebody supporting his case with the concept that he “held his own” against grown men overseas and against Team USA in the Olympics, Patrick Mills gets zero credit for not just holding his own, but putting in serious work against the Redeem Team and other international juggernauts. “That’s where I stand,” Caron Butler told Michael Lee of the Washington Post on April 9, 2009. “If it’s not Blake Griffin or somebody that can make an immediate impact, then I would prefer having a veteran come in to help us. The time is now.”
With the fifth pick in this month’s draft, it’s not going to be Blake Griffin for Washington. But there’s a chance that the Mavericks might make Butler’s wishes come true. They’re said to be so enamored with Arizona’s 6-10 PF Jordan Hill that they’d include either Jason Terry or Josh Howard in a trade to secure Hill’s services.

Bill Simmons posted a link to this video on his Twitter feed about 20 minutes ago with this attached: “#UTube Classic: Chris Childs punches Kobe right in the face. Would anyone dared to do this to MJ?”
After spending his last eight years coaching at Pepperdine, serving as an assistant under Avery Johnson in Dallas, and attending multiple Clay Aiken concerts with his wife (yes, that happened), Paul Westphal is back. Kings GM Geoff Petrie chose Westphal over LA Lakers’ assistant Kurt Rambis and Boston defensive specialist Tom Thibodeau.
Frankly, those Clay Aiken concerts sound like fun compared to trying to win in the West with the Kings’ roster. Enjoy yourself, Paulie!
