Raptors Trade Jason Kapono to Sixers for Reggie Evans

jason kapono
In a relatively minor deal that actually helps both teams involved, the Toronto Raptors have reportedly traded Jason Kapono to the Sixers for Reggie Evans. The Raptors have plenty of shooters on their roster but zero toughness, especially in the paint, so Evans will come in and do his thing in (presumably) limited minutes.

Meanwhile, the Sixers have plenty of goons on their roster but very few guys who have any idea how to play basketball and/or make jump shots. I watched pretty much every Sixers game this season and the only time they ever had a long-distance threat on the court was when Tony DiLeo decided to dust off Donyell Marshall. Plus, I’m for any move that means less court time for Willie Green.

As a Sixer fan it’s kind of fun to picture Eddie Jordan in his first week on the job marching into GM Ed Stefanski’s office and hitting him with a list of demands that start with “Get me Jason Kapono!”

If this true then its pretty good for both sides but I thought colangelo could get someone a little better than reggie evans for a two time 3 point champion…..Bosh is all but gone in 2010

  2. goonther says:

LOL @ “get me jason kapono”…

dude can hit threes under no pressure, but stick a hand in his face and he gone.

  3. Kobeef says:

    Agree with the first comment.
Kopono is one of the best shooters in the NBA and should have commanded more value than Evans who is really only in the league because nobody will buy him out.

Bad trade for the Raps. Great for the Sixers who really needed someone to space the floor and essentially corrected the mistake of dumping Korver a few years ago.

  4. Patrick Cassidy says:

    @ Kobeef,

I don’t think you can say that dumping Korver was a clear-cut mistake for the Sixers. He was making a ton of money for a guy who as one dimensional as he is. Dumping him basically led to Philly being able to sign Elton Brand (or Josh Smith, depending on which way they decided to go).

  5. JP says:

oh come on…..kapono is terrible….he is a liability when he’s on the floor. He killed the Raps all year…good luck Philly

  6. nick says:

seems to be more of a salary dump by the raps to acquire better rebounding at the same time. trade will def benefit philly way more then toronto.

  7. BigRedFred says:

win/win situation for both teams…..Raps save some cap room…..Raps get tougher(the whole league knows they need it)
Philly gets a shooter who like to shoot alot when given the chance
Hopefully its a first of few moves BC will make

  8. Charles says:

    Absolute robbery!!!!!!!!!!
First off Raps save 1.6 mill this year and 1.6 mill next year. To top that off we traded the biggest liability on the Raps for a guy who has some value. He’s a 3 point specialist who doesn’t shoot 3’s!!!!

At least Reggie can get a rebound and we all know the raps need help there and in the toughness category. Bosh and Bargs are not exactly your Oakley types out there.

Further it makes room / pt to draft / add some guards who want to slash into the paint and create for there teammates.

BC you may have just redeemed yourself. If you could only unload Banks you would become a folk hero.

  9. Jason says:

Brilliant Move – Kapono is slow, an embarrassment on defense and really inconsistent. Toronto is glad to shed that salary for a tough guy…

  10. method526 says:

well that solves the sixers’ three-point situation…if kapono can actually make some 3’s in games instead of the 3point shootout.

  11. Grissy says:

Although I agree that Kapono should have gotten the Raps more in return, I’m still glad to see him go.

Sure, he’s a threat behind the arc but he’s a spot-minute specialist at best. Plus, what’s the point of having a great shooter if he doesn’t shoot??? He finished 78th in 3pt attempted…

Originally, I was hoping they were gonna move him to Denver at the deadline for Kleiza and 2nd rounder or something like that. I figured with Chauncey and ‘Melo spreading the floor, the Nuggs could’ve given JK some of Dahntay Jones’ minutes and in return, the Raps would’ve got some cap relief and more toughness.

The wire also claims that the Raps are trying to get Georgios Printezis over here pending his release from Olympiacos so this move frees up some room for him as well…

    Good riddance JK…

  12. star_bury says:

Yes! Evans is the missing piece the Rators need to win the ‘chip next season!

  13. star_bury says:

Damn it. Try to be a clown and eff up the spelling of “Raptors”….

  14. JA says:

    Decent tweak for both teams.

Wonder what this means for Jawai/O’Bryant … probably dump one/both of them now to save some extra cap (both have team options as far as I know for next year).

  15. controll says:

I heard the NBA actually setup this trade to get Reggie in Canada, due to the more relaxed sexual harassment laws there…

  16. Taj says:

I liked JK with the Raps.. Don’t like to see him go.. They underutilized him terribly, barely ran plays to get him open and his efficiency dropped and got alot of his buckets in garbage time. I do agree they need some toughness down low, but I woulda given up an Anthony Parker or someone else.

  17. the cynic says:

some of you guys are crazy; Kapono isn’t worth the bag of balls Reggie Evans has been collecting in his basement

Fantastic move by Raptors, not so much for the Sixers

  18. G says:

“I’m for any move that means less court time for Willie Green.” – Amen

Who cares Kapono can’t play D, Sixers dont play D anyway

  19. LakeShow84 says:

Works for both teams.. Now they can actually make space for Brand and Toronto gets a dirty, errrr, i mean tough player to keep dudes jumpy in the front court..

and trust me with Reggie Evans around i would be jumpy..

  20. young C says:

You’re nuts if you think toronto won this trade. At best it was a tie. At worst the Sixers got the better end of the deal. The raptors didn’t have anybody who could penetrate and create space for kapono. Iguodala,Young,Brand,Williams, and maybe Miller will complement him much better than the Raps roster did.

  21. David_Brandon says:

its a good trade. sometimes the best ones are just the small ones.
and really…if you CAN get rid of reggie, you do. you want the other evans brother. lol

  22. young C says:

I won’t be surprised if this ends up like the o’neal trade for toronto. Theyre such big homers they don’t know how to temper their excitement everytime their team makes a mediocre trade(most of them).

  23. We'Re now the Arm Pit says:

Wake up Raptor fans, you got robbed. look at the numbers, Kapono and Evans practically grabed the same number of boards (career average) Evans couldn’t cover my grandmoter on Defense. Look what Rasheed Walace and Dwight Howard did to him the past 2 post seasons…oh wait they didn’t even bother to put him on howard because they knew he is horrible. I would have traded Reggies Evans for a cheese steak…Sixers totally made out…no matter how bad kapono is. Thank god he is gone!

  24. Ashlov says:

    Kyle Korver v2.0

  25. TomGfromCanada says:

    Raps lose on this one

  26. Kudabeen says:

For people knocking KApono. His flaws in Toronto as far as not getting many 3 point opportunities is purely a coaching flaw. If Eddie Jordan is as good of a offensive coach as advertised it won’t be an issue on a team full of guys that push the pace and attack the basket.

  27. djKianoosh says:

i hope kudabeen’s right.. hopefully the trade works out for both teams. i think kapono might actually start.. right? can’t tell me he’s not a good shooter. with Wade in miami this kid was lighting it up. how come all of a sudden he can’t do that?

  28. Coop says:

    Even Stevens

  29. Sweet English says:

Oh man now what am i gonna do with my closet full of reggie evans Philly Jerseys?

    YAWN.

  30. Danny says:

A player like kapono barely even gets shots up with Chris bosh and everyone else. Say what you will, but he is a good 3pt shooter and im sure a change of scenery will help.

    * role players don’t get a lotta shots specially to get in rhythm, so who knows how he’s gonna do

  31. spaniard says:

kapono can not play defense. hes a 3 point shooter who doesnt shoot 3s. 76ers r stupid to get him, now they have a huge gaping hole in their defence. who cares about evans, i like the cap space we got, looks like colangelo is ready to make some moves.

  32. Kudabeen says:

Also Kapono was on a team full of shooters. Every on was on the perimeter with the occasional cutter. Bosh was facing up all the time, so it is a different game.

In Miami as stated Kapono showed that he can be effective in stretching the court. He played with possibly the most aggressive driver in the L in Wade. He also had shaq at times drawing defenders. I like the addition either way. Reggie is a good piece, but his exit will force some of the youngs to play hungry for extra minutes.

Jason Smith has nice touch and an outside J. He and Speights should get big minutes with their assortment of skills, but do they have the will to make a difference? We’ll see. That with elton and Dalembert gives us a very versatile Front court.

Now we need to figure out the Andre Miller situation before the draft.

I want Ramon Sessions on the team pronto.

  33. Kudabeen says:

    LOL @ post 29…

  34. chris says:

thank god the awful kapono commercials (shooting 3s for groceries)in canada will stop…now if we could just get rid of the awful bosh juicy fruit commercials, too…that would just leave the awful ones of bargnani eating spaghetti. who comes up with this crap? vince carter’s #15 raptors jersey remains the franchise icon, and after araujo, bosh, bargnani,in the last few drafts, and o’neal, marion, banks, o’bryant, and now evans in the last few trades, there really isn’t much to get excited about, is there?

  35. Rockco says:

Reggie got D and Kapo No got No D. I Guess ii works both ways.

  36. Steve says:

Im not sure if the people who are loving kapono so much have ever watched a raptors game…we were all excited when kapono came, but he can only hit in competitions…as for evans, no one is expecting him to do much but grab a couple rebounds when the starters are out…which is an improvement considering i cannot remember kapono doing anything but turn the ball over and pass up open threes. In addition, it opens up 2 mill for free agents…I would say the raptors won, but if kapono does what he is capable of on a team that needs a shooter, than it is a good trade for both teams…
