S-Jack Might Be Too Diesel to Play Basketball

Apparently Stephen Jackson is a monster in the weight room. He told a radio station today that he has already put on 25 pounds of muscle this offseason.
From RealGM:
“I got some news for ya, I got on the scale today, I weighed 240,” Jackson told KNBR with Fitz and Brooks.
” … I still look the same as when the season ended. I’ve been eating good, I’ve been running a lot, and shooting 500 shots a day, so, I’ve been working out. I got on the scale and I was kinda scared because I didn’t think I weighed that much, because when I was working out the day before, I was moving real good, I dunked a couple times, I’m moving like I normally move. So, I was wondering, ‘How am I 240 and I still feel the same?’ I plan on playing at around 230, 225, but the way I feel now, I feel great.”
Any time I hear something like this I automatically think back to when I was a kid and the Sixers brought in Jimmy Jackson. I remembered being so excited to watch Jimmy play but when I saw him on opening night, the dude was too jacked to do anything. He could barely move, let alone shoot a basketball.

I fear that this will result in more Stephen Jackson turnovers leading to the oppositions fastbreak points. What is he going to do, run the point center position, and have Biedrins play the 4???????

This story is in need of further clarification…
Jack was around 235 back in March. He hasn’t simply added 25 pounds in a matter of a couple months.
He’s made a concerted effort this entire season to hit the weights for the first time in his career and it paid dividends during the season and obviously has continued during his time off.
But he has not added “25 pounds of muscle in the offseason.” It’s been a gradual thing…

25 pounds of pure muscle is very hard to gain, especially for a basketball player, even a professional one.The thing is,you might be able to bulk up,but all the cardio type exercise ,(i.e. basketball )just ends up breaking down muscle.I was unaware of this for years, until a bodybuilder hipped me to it.I labored to put on 15 pounds one Summer, and I didn’t touch a ball at all.Man,that in itself was a task of Herculean proportions. That Fall,I was kicking ass and taking names because I was all out of Gatorgum!Remember that stuff?

I Remember “Action” Jackson coming to the team! Looked like he was going to do damage, but that would have only been if he went ape-shit and tossed the tossed the basket into the crowd. Totally mirror muscles. They didn’t help his game at all. He was a good scorer that went too hard in the gym in the wrong direction.

I think the problem here is that he thinks that gaining 25 lbs is all muscle. . .Step 1 is admitting you have a problem.

Mr Cassidy, nowhere in that quote does he imply it’s all muscle so I can only assume you think that it’s physically possible to put on 25 pounds of muscle in a couple of months. Check your history!

The NBA might as well have a “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy when it comes to drugs. They test people, at most, 4 times a year. Further, they don’t test for human growth hormone, blood transfusions, and other things that are tested for by the olympics and cycling. The NBA drug policy is big enough to drive a diesel through. Compare the NBA and WADA policies:

http://www.wada-ama.org/en/
It may well be that SJAck is drug free, and he is finally lifting weights. It may be that Kobe got a second wind. I was also hopeful that in the Tour de France that Floyd Landis had just done an amazing feat of personal will when he came back from total exhaustion to win the tour. With a drug policy this lax, there would have to be all kinds of doping going on in the NBA.

The NBA drug policy is lax because roids don’t really help you in the sport of basketball. I see muscle bound cats coming into the gym all the time but without the skill they get ran out the gym.

Bron42 aka Had Springs Before Slamball says:
@big shot, um roids could help you alot in basketball, just by makin you more explosive. Not everyone on roids is just big bodybuilders…look at ben johnson or gatlin from track, they did roids and were skinny built dudes but explosive as shit.
As for 25lbs of muscle over the summer? ya that is kinda a strength. Only way its really possible is he was fat or had crazy high body fat %, so by lower the body fat and replace it wit muscle. So you stay around the same weight but got more muscle on ya frame. But for a guy with his body type that would be reallllly tough. but then again, lebron did it between high school and the pros too. Same with rodman after his first year.

Ender says:
There are steroids - and other doping agents - that help people recover more quickly. Reportedly, more pitchers used steroids than any other type of baseball player so their arms could recover between games. Similarly, Landis had “superhuman” endurance, winning a stage and ultimately the tour after falling well behind the leaders on the previous ride. It seems to me that these would be the prevalent methods of doping in the NBA.
