The Timberwolves – What Could Have Been

jonny-flynn
I’m confused. I’m going to write this rumor off as not true, but I’ll break it down anyway. Our boys over at RealGM.com have the following story on their homepage right now:

“The Knicks offered the Timberwolves the eighth pick and forward Wilson Chandler for the fifth selection in last week’s NBA Draft. Minnesota declined, and used the fifth overall pick on Ricky Rubio. Reports indicate that New York would have used the selection on Rubio, not Stephen Curry.”

Can’t be true right? If so, the Wolves passed up coming away in the draft with Stephen Curry at the 6th pick, Jonny Flynn at the 8th pick (the Warriors didn’t workout Flynn and had no intention of taking him) AND landing Wilson Chandler.

That would have given the Wolves a lineup of:

C: Al Jefferson
PF: Kevin Love
SF: Wilson Chandler
SG: Stephen Curry
PG: Jonny Flynn

Bench – Wayne Ellington, Corey Brewer, Ryan Gomes, Sebastian Telfair, Etan Thomas, Craig Smith, and Songalia.

They wouldn’t have made the playoffs, but they would have had one of the nicer young rosters in the NBA. Instead, they’re in this PR mess with Rubio. So I’ll say it again – This trade rumor can’t be true… right?

i can do a MUCH better job as a GM than these clowns.

The Wolves are the Clippers of the North . . . they keep on drafting guard after guard in their drafts . . . Kevin Love and Big Al are going to leave as soon as their contracts are up!

  • J Tok

They had the best situation in the draft, and messed it up real early. Worse franchise right now?

  • J Tok

Worst Franchise in the league now?*

    *yes

I hated the Wolves ever since they almost destroyed KG´s career.

And now they are the reason the biggest european talent will maybe never play in the NBA. This Kahn guy seems to be a Isiah type of GM.

I so hope Rubios agent can work something out

  • Coop

Hahaha @ post 1. Maybe the Wolves figure they aren’t going to be relevant for a while anyway and they’re happy to wait for Rubio, figuring that he’ll draw crowds if/when he arrives.

  • karizmatic

Let’s hope it’s not true, but then again there is a reason certain teams are perennially in the lottery and no one wants to play for them, and it’s not just the cold weather either.

  • Notorious

Downright moronic on the Wolves part if that is true. I am not sold on Rubio yet, haven’t seen enough to say one way or another. But when you get a deal like that, you gotta take it. You get your point guard, you get Curry and Chandler, very nice pieces to build on.

  • rocco

when the best move in franchise history is trading away a top-20 in nba history player so he could get away from your ABYSS of a franchise, moves like this dont surprise me

i love how flynn’s work-ethic and demeanor fit with the t-wolves current unit, but the rubio pick is an example of how to get fired before the season starts

while other teams have attempted to copy the style of the san antonio front office, minnesota seems to be using the LA Clippers cliffs notes

  • B Nice

Is only including Wilson Chandler enough to drop down three spots? If I were the Wolves I would have pushed for David Lee and the 8th pick for the 5th pick.

  • Derek

You New York fans are clowns. What makes you think that Wilson Chandler is good enough to pass on Ricky Rubio for? And you want to talk about a joke of a franchise? The Knicks are royally screwed unless they can convince LeBron or Wade to come there in 2010. You don’t build teams from the ground up, don’t draft good players and make awful trades … and expect that the size of your city automatically means that you’re supposed to be good.

Give me a break. The Wolves have Rubio, New York doesn’t, and there is nothing that the Knicks have that could convince the Wolves to give him up. David Lee isn’t as good as either of the Wolves big men, Nate Robinson is a joke, and you don’t have anything else that matters.

  • George W Kush Sr

If it’s not a rumor than Khan is an idiot. The only thing I can imagine now is that they get some seriouss value out of trading Rubio. But anyhow it gets too public that Rubio is just staying in Europe because he wont dress for Minny then they ain’t getting shit all back in which case Khan fucked up royally.

I never liked the idea of drafting 4 point guards and keeping two. He could have had Flynn and DeRozan, could have had Curry and Flynn, could have have Curry, Flynn and Chandler, instead of ending up with just Flynn which I think will happen in the end.

  • I.Dot

johnny flynn and stephen curry would get murdered in the backcourt. 2 small guards in the starting lineup isnt wise at all.

  • d’Antonio

    You guys don’t understand.
No matter which clowns they drafted in this weak-ass draft, the Wolves weree going nowhere next year. Kahn knew it very well, so what does he do?
    1. He drafts the best player available at each pick
    2. He trades one of his picks to own the Bobcats (lottery) pick next in 2010, a MUCH stronger draft

Now the whole league is drooling over Rubio and Kahn can either get a great deal for the kid, either come of up with a plan where Rubio and Flynn each run the team for 15 min and share the court for 15min (good enough to gauge how good each player is), either wait for Rubio, either deal Flynn.

Kahn had chumps like Foye and Miller to start with and now he has a ton of talent and flexibility to build his team.

I am affraid to say that you guys were outsmarted…

    Yeah also:

Who was he supposed to draft insted of Flynn? Curry can’t play 2-guard in the league and Derozan has not shown enough last year to get drafted that high.

  • sh!tfaced

if we’re talking about the what could have been (which is what the t-wolves are all about since the draft anyway), then we should add nick calathes to the lineup. whom they gave away to the mavs late in the draft.

  • loons

@11…that’s just uninformed nonsense. don’t compare the isiah knicks to the donnie knicks. donnie walsh has yet to make a bad move. yes the team still stinks, but that’s years of crap that still needs to be flushed. so far most of it is gone. even without lebron, the knicks will be just fine, thank you very much.

  • wolves fan

I hope we trade rubio to toronto for some molson ice since we don deserve a player like ricky because NEW YORK fans want him.

F off NY, you wanted him that bad, mke a trade with the wizards a week ago and you could have had them but Im guessing the wiz didnt want your garbage

  • MNTwolves

I think what the wolves wanted to do was draft Rubio at the #5 pick and then pick Flynn #6 and trade him + the #18 pick to the Kings for Evans. But I think the Kings rejected that trade.

  • Andrew Donaldson

Chandler isn’t an upgrade at 3 for the Wolves. Ryan Gomes will be better than Chandler next year. So you want the Wolves to trade down from 5 to 8 for a light-on-defense back-up small forward? New Yorkers really need to lay off all that crack.

Given the feeding frenzy for Rubio, it’s clear non-lottery teams regarded him as the 2nd best player in the draft. If most of the sport’s general managers are right, just imagine how good he’ll be two years from now when his Spanish contract has expired, and the Timberwolves STILL own his rights, and he has to decide if he wants to cost himself $50-100 MILLION over his career simply so he doesn’t have to play in Minnesota.

Minnesotans make it through 7 month winters. Ricky Rubio is not going to beat them in a test of wills.

    @11,

“David Lee isn’t as good as either of the Wolves big men”

    - By this you mean that David Lee isn’t as good as Jefferson and Kevin Love? Kevin Love is better than David Lee? You’re retarded.

    “Nate Robinson is a joke”

    - Nate’s 17, 4 and 4 averages from last season eclipse those of any PG on Minnesota’s roster, and he wasn’t even a starter. Again, you’re retarded.

  • Arno

First, let’s remember that the Wolves HAD Miller, McCants and Foye. They gave good players for a draft choice that won’t play for them. Clever move…

Now, The Wolves compete with the Warriors stocking PG, which is quite a strange game, and they have no team : how do you play the Spurs or the Lakers with ryan Gomes, Brian Cardinal and Shelden Williams on the wings ?

But this mess can be easily explained : the guys who took the decisions aren’t building a team, they are trading assets and looking if those assets fit together is irrelevant for them.
It’s a shame but you can understand (while you can’t understand why a former famous player would deliberately destroy a former contender from Arizona).

  • Ignorant Ish

    LOL @ Flynn/Curry sub 6 foot backcourt, and LOL @ Chandler’s overrating

This post can’t be true… right?

  • KnicksFan84

Time for me to chime in. Look, I understand what the T-Wolves are trying to accomplish. It somewhat so far backfired in their face because of Rubio’s side opening their big fat mouth screaming bloody murder that they don’t want to play in Minnesota.

Now teams know that and aren’t inclined to give up as much in a trade to get him. They MIGHT have been better off drafting Jordan Hill and then trading Kevin Love instead of trying to trade an “unknown” quantity at this point. It’s always easier to trade a known asset than a just drafted guy who nobody has seen play yet in the NBA.

Randy Foye was nothing special to go crazy over nor was Mike Miller. The team needed to be blown up in the backcourt and they did that. Flynn was drafted too high IMO but w/e.

They need to find a trading partner fast, I don’t think it’ll be my Knicks though.

  • http://dime sure

Randy Foye is better than nate robinson. He had surgery and is now getting back to form. As a non Knick fan but New Yorker. We’d even take Sebastian to be our back-up or starter. Losing makes any player look bad. Look what the Lakers did for Shannon Brown and Ariza. If either were on other teams or different systems it would be afterthought. Judge players by their individual talent. Baron Davis on a winning team is a H.O.F. talent/player. Luke Walton aside from the Lakers isn’t a N.B.A. player. Garnett w/ one ring H.O.F. Garnett w/ no ring. H.O.F. The Hornets suck. Put Chris Paul on Atlanta and they contend for a championship. Take Ginobli away from the Spurs they’re not a dynasty. No scottie. MJ and Phil totals are different.
