Best players to never make it in the NBA

Marcus Hatten
Slow news days in the offseason lead to inter-Dime crew arguments that last way longer than necessary. Last week it was the “Who has the best handle?” debate. Today, after Marcus Hatten of all people got a mention in Smack, we’ve been talking about the best players we’ve ever seen who didn’t make it to (or stick in) the NBA.
Everybody’s got a story about one: A dude who never made it past the playground, a high schooler who was G-O-D locally, a college guy who you just knew had pro game but for some reason didn’t work out. Maybe the guy even got drafted or had a 10-day, but he never stuck around to make an impression.
Who’s the best player you’ve ever seen who never made it in the NBA?

Best player I ever saw who didn’t make it to the NBA was this kid named Jerod Thompson. JT looked nothing like a ballplayer. Small white kid. Maybe 5’11 145lbs soaking wet. He had an ill crossover and a lazy left handed stroke that was money from about 30 feet. And he won a summer league dunk contes!!! His game was crazy. In my mind the only reason he never got a shot in the league was his size and maybe a little reverse racism. I know the league has had players like Mugsy, Spudd, and Earl (Boykins), but has the league ever had any small white players? Anyway JT gets my vote and if you saw him play you probably agree.

He went to Uconn and got in some trouble then bounced around several leagues, but he was the truth!
I have played ball from coast to coast and I thik he was the biggest waste I have seen. most of yall wont know him because seattle didnt get props back then..

Pete Woolfok: He played for University of Richmond back in the mid to late eighties. 6-5 center who absolutely destroyed David Robinson when the Spiders played Navy. Too short to play in the post in the bigs, and too slow to make the transition to the wing, he never garnered any NBA interest. There was a time when a 6-5 and under league was starting to form, but it didn’t take off until years later as the WNBA

Dajuan Wagner was the truth! When he first hit the league, I thought he was the next Iverson. Wonder what comp he’s killing right now? Last I heard, he was playing pro in Poland, but that was a couple of years ago.
Always thought Troy Bell could make it in the League (so did the Logo, Jerry West, who drafted him in the first round). Had great handles and athleticism. In college dude could get the rim at will.
Another dude I liked alot was Hollis Price, a skinny dude who shot the lights out. Put the Sooners on the map by leading them to the Final Four. Would Blake Griffin had come to Oklahoma if Price hadnt led Oklahoma? Maybe not. Always wondered how Juan Dixon could stick in the league, but not Hollis Price, seeing as they both had identical games.
Come to think of it, all the guys I listed were all undersized 2s. It’s like they came an era too early, before the League started embracing Ben Gordon and Monta Ellis type players.

Best I ever saw at the time vs. their own level of competition.
Estaban Weaver at age 16 (around 1996)
Schea Cotton at age 14 (around 1994)
Charles Haney at age 14 (around 1994)
They weren’t necessarily better than the players listed, but for their time and age they were great. This may be an answer to a different question though.

Oh, forgot to mention Alimoe from And 1. At 6’5 or 6’6 with his handles and court vision, he could have carved out a Brian Shaw-like career AT LEAST.
July 23rd, 2009 at 4:53 pm
Clutch says:
got to second that on Miles Simon. He was flat out a top five college player when hge was at Arizona, good handel vision and shooting ability. Though he wasa tad small for the SG slot at 6’4, there are plenty of players that are 6’4 that stick in the league and even do well. Ben Gorden, JJ redick, Wade, etc.
Also another zona player, Salim Stoudamire, best shooter in the last 20 years in college, put REdick and Loften to shame. I have never seen a player move so well with out the ball, have such a quick release and be able to shoot in so many ways. Pull ups from either side, runner, floater, fades, catch and shoot. You name a type of Shot and Salim would drop it in from anywhere on the court. Supposedly for shooting practice he would shoot 10 times from every letter on the Arizona mid court logo with the cactus and nail them all.
Also another is recent. Reggie Williams from VMI, 6’6 and a pure scoring machine and two guard who never got any real shot at the league do to comming from a small school that didn’t make the tourny

Andrew Parker from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. This kid was around 6’5 210. Built and could jump out the gym. Quick as hell. Overall, dude was one of the funniest and easy going cats around. But yeah, Youtube Andrew Parker, that’s my boy right there.

I have 3. Dejaun Wagner,God Shammgod, and Ronnie Fields. Fields would have been one of the most popular players in the NBA. I think Juanny would have been like a Dwyane wade type; an undersized 2. And Shamm he would have been one of the most productive point guards in the league with a better jumpshot. He has the best handle I have ever witnessed. Ronnie Fields was in a car accident his senior year of school and his game and hops declined because of it.
Doug Wrenn was a beast. he came down to LA to play in the Eddie Jones al star game. he was working out on everybody on the court.
Johnathan Haggart was beast at PG, i was known for being a bully pg cuz of my strength. but hagg gave me a run for my money. becuz he would bully u up court then dunk on your center to bring down your team moral.
For SoCal People. imma throw some names out: Kelon Fortune, Schea Cotton, Olijman Mann, Kevin Augustine, Alstair Foxx, Statis Boseman, Sweet Lou Wright, Kenny Brunner. thats all i could think of that came thru and killed but somehow neva got to play in the league but was giving the future nba players hell when in high school.

Starred in Seton Hall’s 1989 season that ended with them losing the final in OT to Michigan but went undrafted. Internationally the guy held the Aussies together and is still the most prolific scorer in Olympic basketball history.

ARVYDAS SABONIS in his prime (mid 20′s to early 30′s) could have been the best center the NBA had ever seen. A very nice combination of monstrous size, strength, agility and basketball smarts with a shooting touch. 7’2″, 300 lbs, could make power plays, could make finesse plays, can run the floor, can shoot the ball with range, monstrous defender in the paint, a shot swatter at 7’2″, and a deft passer, not to mention charismatic. just a great all-around ball playing giant.

Don’t forget about Brian Reese…some of you might know the B. Reese from North Carolina….but that’s not who I’m Talking About!…I’m Talking about B Reese aka the Human Trampoline in High School (Tolentine)…He would jump Out the Building, score, play D, do everything…I don’t know what happened in college…I think it was that dunk he missed in the Big Dance that Year!
Also, Honorable mention to Jerry McCullough from Rice High SChool…I forget what college he attended…but he is legend in NY and the Pic of him Dunking on Adrien Autry was the fist thing you saw when you walked into Gauchos Gym…I saw him bang it on ‘Red’ in Real Life and it was even WORSE than the Pic! Therefore if your in the league. It has nothing to due with your father, friends, coaches, school or AAU you go to. Aside from luck, timing, and the rest of the bull that keeps sure fire talent from blessing the big screen. More people that play and still love and respect the game get shown no love. A N.B.A. jersey doesn’t make you a pro. I’m sure Ice could have made it to the league. If David Stern has a say so about who makes it and doesn’t. Promblem #1. He’s a commisioner who seemed to never play the game on a high level. What are the requirements to be the next commisioner. I know some scouts who never played the game.

Blacksmurf says:
I can say far as the league goes, there are alot of politics that comes into play to decided if a player is league worthy.
Here is a true story. I will not say the name, but it is a player that a few people mentioned on the list of best players that never played in the NBA.
One practice…..This particular player was guarding the teams 1st round pick. He was d-ing him up very well.
The coach called, lets say player X, and told him to ease off of the 1 round pick. Let him do his thing….Well player X, didn’t know how to play soft defense.
Well two days latter he was cut.
This happened with the Detroit Pistons.
There are a number of reasons why some players will never get to the NBA regardless how good they are.
1. Attitudes———Can’t control their emotions.
2. Selfish players
3. Uncoachable
4. No passion for Basketball
5. Alchol, Weed, and women. Well lets say they are very distracted.
So when you see a player who has more talent than players in the NBA not make it, take your pick from my 5 reasons why talented players never make it to the NBA.
July 30th, 2009 at 5:52 pm
sure says:
Politics overide everything written above. It’s some players in the league who are all the above. It all who you know. If you have a powerful agent. AAU team or go to a politically correct High School,College. Your chances increase immensley. The agents who some were merely peasants on the court hold to much power. Same as the Rich GM’s who look at the sport as a circus. They could care less how the product looks. As long as them checks keep coming. I’ve said it before. They exploit exploit. They really don’t want us to succeed. It is a predominatly black league ran by white execs. Wouldn’t it be funny if it were the other way around. There’s a reason due to environment and society duh. The best players should make it period. The league before had a lot of knuckleheads who were a pain. Though at the end of the day the loved and respected the game more than any sorry wanna be baller. Who’s whole career has been staged because of the system he’s in. I could name you 50 players who dont belong in the league and probably should be working 9 to 5′s. You can’t run from the demons you have in your life. Remember kids are innocent an are molded due to there upbringing. If we see better. We’ll do better. It’s a very hard thing to explain if you haven’t experienced. How do you expect us to succeed when were destined to fail. We still do a pretty good job against the odds. Talk about the success and not the failures. There are lot of good kids that come from NY. They haven’t been given the chance. Sebastian Telfair I repeat isn’t and not close to being the best of what NY has to offer. We’ve been unfairly labeled from our knuckleheads and not praised enough for our winners. Quinton Hosley and Yatta Gaines belong on N.B.A. rosters and would do wonders as to addressing the state of NY basketball. I’m praying for Kemba Walker,Edgar Sosa and Corey Fisher as well. They have the talent and are good kids who are nothing like Stephon of now. It’s funny how we adopt the nonsense going on with the Knicks. MSG and the Knickerbockers couldn’t be farther than what NY is. That’s bull. I’m also pushing for Malcolm Grant and Durand Scott to tear apart the competition in the ACC. Could you imagine Lance,Malcolm,Durand,Burrel,Ebanks,Samardo Samuels on the same team. Welcome back FAB 6. All going top 10 because they would go undefeated and win a chip. What would you say about NY then.
