Free agent moves: Hedo to Portland, Kidd to Dallas

Hedo

Hedo

In the last hour, it’s been reported by multiple sources that Hedo Turkoglu has agreed to a deal with the Blazers, and Jason Kidd has agreed to return to the Mavs.

Hedo was believed to have a five-year, $50 million offer on the table from Portland, which he was weighing against a five-year, $60 million offer from Toronto. On paper it doesn’t make sense for the Blazers to go after another small forward when they have a bigger need at point guard and they’ve already got four SF’s on the roster (Martell Webster, Travis Outlaw, Nic Batum, Rudy Fernandez), and especially when one of their prized young players may be royally pissed off by the team brining in Hedo. But Hedo is better than any of those guys, and if Portland wants to win now, he’s the right player to go after; he can play PG in crunch time and gives the Blazers another guy to sling daggers in the fourth quarter next to Outlaw and Brandon Roy.

As for Kidd, his two main suitors were the Mavs and Knicks — kind of suprising considering he was expected to be a target of contending teams with mid-level exceptions like the Lakers and Cavs. But Kidd was obviously more interested in long-term security than a one-and-done run at a championship, and the Mavs came through with a reported offer for three years at $27 million.

the mavs need to give it up and start rebuilding with young talent, whos the last draft pick to play significant minutes for this team. We did get lucky and find some undrafted fa’s though (barea)

  2. bab says:

Pumped to watch Hedo in Ptown. Outlaw is as good as gone because Webster has no value coming off of back to back injuries. Batum is the future, anyway. It’s just as well, Travis’s BBIQ is so low that it is like watching a high school player at times. Plus, I wouldn’t trust anything coming out of the Spanish media in the past week, none of it has been verified.

  3. sonny says:

Portland has way too many assets. They have to make a trade I think, they are killing their younger players.

  4. DA ONE says:

the mavs are armed with 2 expiring deals dampier and stackhouse that could put them in contention with a trade for amare or boozer or whoever they can get due to the cost-cutting economy.

  5. wanabballer says:

C’mon OUTLAW – sign with PHX!!

  6. wanabballer says:

    (tehnically) comeback to PHX RUDY!!

  7. sh!tfaced says:

blazers are now loaded at every position except pg

  8. Alvin says:

    the raptors are screwed.

  9. Claw says:

Trade Nash to Portland, that’d be sweet.
They have enough picks/players to facilitate a deal and makes them a NBA Contendor right now and give the Suns some building blocks for the future.

  10. K Dizzle says:

    @ Dime

please tell me you guys saw this stupid ass article sayin Kidd had to choose between family and money in his next deal. Thought it was a joke when i read it…

  11. mike says:

As a raptors fan, I was so hyped the last few days seeing all the offers they were making but now I am just depressed because I am realizing no one wants to come to Canada….

  12. Scott says:

As a Raptors fan, I’m pretty damn delighted that Hedo chose the Blazers, he’s good, but we’re not on the level where he’d make a big enough difference. Plus he’s 30, and not getting any younger. Ariza would’ve been nice, but they way Marion meshed with the squad, if they can get him, bring back Delfino so they add another asshole(in a good way) to the squad, and if they can grab Klieza or even go after one of the younger guns out there like Marvin Williams or Von Wafer, it’d be nice to see.

BC was too aggressive to not get something significant done, its just a shame that most general Raps fans don’t think bringing Marion back is a significant move. When he fits really well, and offsets Bargs lack of rebounding at times, where as Bargs shot offsets Marion’s lack of one at times.

  13. flegman says:

I bet Hedo in Por will be like Detlef Schrempf or Shawn Kemp in Por.
Big name (at that time), big money, declining.

  14. BNZA says:

since when is Rudy a SF?

  15. Jau says:

I totally agree with scott on post12

Raps r better off wit marion kleiza delfino n wafer uf we can afford all of them

  16. MoxWestCoastRep says:

Good move for Portland, this puts them in the top half in the west
    1. Lake show
    2. Denver
    3. SA
    4. P-town
    5. NO
    6.Houston
    7.Utah
    8.PHX

  17. POPPI GEE says:

Nice move for Hedo he basically goes to another great team and makes more money in the process.

Now Kidd disappoints me because NY running seems like it would just really be a fit for him passing and throwing oops and a really great market.

But can’t trip on dude for getting that money. Dallas shouldn’t do to much though with their biggest free agent signing being Gortat lol.

    Go Mavs!

  18. POPPI GEE says:

MoxWestCoastRep you got the Spurs below Denver??

    Just curious why?

  19. Spliff 2 My Lou says:

    @ mox

Dallas is better than Houston and phoenix right now and even possibly new orleans.

  20. Spliff 2 My Lou says:

    I say

    Lakers
    San antonio
    Denver
    Utah
    Portland
    Dallas
    New Orleans

  21. POPPI GEE says:

    Imma say
    Lakers
    San Antonio
    Portland
    Denver
    Dallas
    New Orleans
    Houston
    Phoenix

What I hope for is lol
    Lakers
    San An
    Houston
    and the rest.

  22. QQ says:

    Will miss ya, Hedo.

    We had a good run.

Keep ya head, and keep ballin.

    The Q.

  23. jeff says:

Toronto actually pulled their offer..if they hadn’t Hedo would of sure have chosen Toronto..plus there was a report that Hedo’s wife wanted him to sign with Toronto over Portland..

  24. Dagomar says:

I don’t know what or where you guys are reading, but Toronto backed off its offer, if it was even given in the first place (it would have meant signing off on Marion, Delfino and Parker, which BC was loathe to do). Apparently Toronto was Turk’s first choice, as it is for many internal players. The Raps are now pursuing Lee, a much, much better choice if they can nab him.

  25. Dagomar says:

PS: I think Portland should have gone after a seasoned presence at point rather than another swingman, but okay.

  26. POPPI GEE says:

Dagomar I totally agree. I just don’t see where Blake will get it.

  27. POPPI GEE says:

Should have just cut the middle man and Kidd go to Portland and Hedo to Toronto.

Andre Miller could have been in Portland too I could have seen him running with them.

  28. Elvis says:

No No No!!! Teams are raiding my Magics. If my Magics don’t make a move and sign Wallace, we would have essentially traded Rafer, Lee, Gortat, and Hedo for Vinsanity and the team will be worst for it. There goes our depth and we have no bench besides Air France and AJ. Damn!

  29. Scott says:

Out of curiousity, can anyone explain the logic in the Raps signing Lee? Or Lee over the alternatives? I just don’t get it, or haven’t read the reasons.

  30. bab says:

Yo, the Oregonian is reported that the Hedo deal is dead. As is the negotiations.

  31. IrishBaller says:

Mavs should trade for T-Mac… Ryan Hollins, Erick Dampier and Jerry Stackhouse to Houston

Another thought – Josh Howard to Toronto for Shawn Marion…

  32. Kobeef says:

    @bab

Despite reports that the deal is done, Marion is still not happy with what Toronto is offering either…which certainly creates some speculation that Hedo changed his mind and is going to Toronto after all.

  33. George W Kush Sr says:

Toronto should go after guys like Kleiza, Parker, should’ve gone after Ariza instead of Marion, I dont like them going after Hedo, don’t make sens.

    They desperately need some wings.

  34. maddskizzle says:

Turkoglu had agreed on a five-year, $50 million deal with the Blazers, but changed his mind and could be headed for a five-year, $56 million deal with the Raptors. Toronto would have to renounce three free agents – Shawn Marion(notes), Carlos Delfino(notes) and Anthony Parker(notes) – to create the cap space for Turkoglu.

  35. Dagomar says:

Poppi: seems we agree on a lot. Blake’s a pretty good player but I think some veteran presence at the 1 would be huge, especially considering that’s the only (minor) hole I can see on the Lakers roster.

Scott: I would say the logic behind signing Lee in Toronto would be that Toronto’s big man rotation is crazy thin. Behind Bosh and Bargnani there’s basically just spare parts off the bench, though I always thought Humphries had some good upside. Bosh is an adequate rebounder but Bargnani, in part due to his perimeter-oriented offense, is a bad rebounder for his position. Lee could solve some of the rebounding problems by playing good minutes off the bench. Either way the Raps will be trying for a more up-tempo offense, and Lee knows that game. And if Bosh leaves for free agency Lee will ensure the Raps at least have two good young big men, which is a nice place to start rebuilding.

  36. Dagomar says:

Oh, yeah Turk seems to be going to Toronto now. Terrible move for the Raps in my opinion, but Portland is lucky. I like how Toronto is described as a more “European-style city” in some of the news reports. Toronto couldn’t be more American, if you ask me.

  37. Vinsanity 4Life says:

I think if the Raps can’t get Marion at 8 or 9 a year they should offer that to Odom. Lakers probably won’t match. Very long and athletic front line with Bosh, Andrea and Odom.

  40. POPPI GEE says:

JHov your article just proves what I have guessed all along.

  41. JHov says:

haha..you tripping..Artest is kinda throwed off though! I just hope Phil can work his magic on him (similar to what he did with Dennis Rodman)

  42. Joshua says:

Now it is reported that hedo is heading to the raptors.
