Stephon Marbury’s best option: Europe

Stephon Marbury

How can a grown man run, cut, jump and flop on grass for 90 minutes nonstop while wearing $15 cleats?

If Stephon Marbury plays his next pro basketball game in the place he thinks he’s gonna play it, that’ll be the question he needs to answer for any potential business partners.

After making it clear he wanted to come back to the Celtics regardless of the (very little) money they could offer him, Steph has been informed by the team that they won’t be re-signing him, primarily thanks to the Rasheed Wallace acquisition. So Steph now tells the New York Post he’s looking at Europe. Read More »

NBA Trade Rumor: Gerald Wallace to the Cavs

Gerald Wallace

If there’s any truth to the rumor that LeBron and Chris Bosh are dead-set on playing together past 2010 in Cleveland, then they’d have a tough time trading for Gerald Wallace‘s four years and $40 million remaining.

Plus, having just dished out $50 million to a guy who can only set screens and rebound, it might not be the best decision to go after a guy like Crash, who prides himself on those same intangibles. Read More »

The Most Bloated Contract of the Offseason

varejao

The competition for the annual Jerome James award for the most bloated offseason signing is really heating up.

While the Blazers are balking at a five-year max deal for the face of their franchise Brandon Roy, other teams are offering truckloads of cash to bench players. Read More »

Jordan Crawford Dishes on “The Dunk”

LeBron got the tape of Jordan Crawford‘s supposedly spectacular cram on him terminated. But he forgot to have someone keep the videographer quiet. That dude, Ryan Miller, opened his mouth and this story turned into a national headline. If I were Miller or Jordan Crawford, I’d stay mum on “Tape-gate” so that LeBron’s crew doesn’t do to me what they did to the tape.

The Grizzlies Are Too Nice

chris-wallace

At the top of virtually every NBA news wire feed yesterday, there was some variation on this headline: Marion-to-Dallas talks reach standstill.” If you clicked on that link, you’d read that Toronto and Dallas needed other teams to facilitate the trade given some complicated financial matters.

Enter the Memphis Grizzlies. They could have kept to themselves, making it increasingly difficult for the Matrix to end up in their conference. But noooo. Not on Chris Wallace‘s watch. Read More »

Shawn Marion to Dallas in 4-team trade; LeBron’s Spike Lee joint

Shawn Marion

So is it OK for Shawn Marion to be good again? As the centerpiece of a complicated four-team trade that went down last night, Marion is (pending League approval) headed to Dallas, where he’ll continue his tradition of being paired with an elite point guard who can make him look like a Top-20 NBA player. First it was Steph in his prime, then Steve Nash in his prime, and now Jason Kidd (at the end of the road). We still haven’t been able to figure out just how good Marion is without the assists/assistance of an All-Star PG — here’s where the Raptors fans try to sell Jose Calderon as an All-Star — and even the stints with Miami and Toronto where his production fell off could be chalked up to not having enough time to blend into their system or not being in the right system. Where I’m Going To Be On Saturday

Venice Beach

As I conclude my work day in NYC, I take off for an early flight tomorrow morning to head out to Los Angeles. The last time I was there I was hanging out with Kobe, but this time it will be The King and Duck. Read More »

The King of Pop

Kobe Bryant

Somewhere in the unwritten manual of home training, I’m sure there’s something about not criticizing a man’s funeral. But Michael Jackson‘s internationally-televised memorial service was not the standard funeral. And not because of some erroneous notion that Mike is more important than anyone else, but because his funeral was — albeit inevitably, given his celebrity — executed more like an awards show. (You think the Mr. Blackwells of the world weren’t debating whether or not to run a “Best and Worst Dressed” list?)

So I know I’m not the only person who wondered aloud why — for an event where the list of speakers was obviously carefully selected from a large pool of candidates — Kobe Bryant was on stage alongside Magic Johnson. Read More »

The Mysterious Case of Marcus Haislip

Marcus Haislip

Maybe I wasn’t watching basketball too carefully when Marcus Haislip was averaging 16.7 points and 6.7 boards per game at Tennessee. Or maybe he just didn’t make that much of an impression on me.

But now that the Spurs signed him to play on their summer league squad, Haislip is being re-hyped as a 6-10 heap of potential. It could be that R.C. Buford and San Antonio’s management is really a step ahead of the rest of the League, or we’re all just buying into a false mystique about the Spurs. Read More »
