Ron Artest says he’s a Laker

Ron Artest

Ron Artest

Who knows what to read into what comes out of Ron Artest’s mouth (or his Twitter page) these days, but actual real-life Ron-Ron just told a CBS Sports reporter that he is in fact signing with the Lakers.

“I’m definitely going to L.A. — to sign, yeah,” Artest said. “Lakers, Lakers, Lakers. I’m in L.A. right now. I don’t really care about the money. I’ll play there for nothing. … L.A. was very interested in me, and they got me.”

Artest says it’s a 5-year, $32 million deal. Presumably this means Trevor Ariza is gone, as he’s getting interest from the Cavs and Rockets, among other teams. Now do the Lakers still go after Lamar Odom, let him sign elsewhere?

  1. Mr.Wang says:

    Kobe stopper?
How bout LeBron stopper…….ugh, Lakers Dynasty w/Kobe-Pau-Artest-Odom-Bynum…..FACK!

  2. Nigel says:

If Bynum can get his fucking act together, they will be legendary.

  3. Rangerjohn says:

Be better with ariza, artest will not help chemestry and how is he going to deal with being the 3-4 scorer? Watching him here in Houston he couldn’t handle being the 2nd fiddle.

  4. DvDJ Steve says:

No one is gonna score on us. Lebron, Melo, Jefferson, Pierce, etc…. Ron Artest will shut them ALL down. Can you say……

    3 Peat BAAAAAAAAAAAAABAAAAYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Claw says:

Might have been a defensive move to not have him go to the Cavs, though the Lakers probably lose out on Ariza and Odom, they aren’t All Stars but if Ariza doesn’t hit that 3 with the shot clock running out they lose that game plus he’s been becoming a solid defender.

Would be nuttey if Ariza hooks up with Ctown but I think he’s looking for a big payday.

  6. el says:

Let’s not get crazy…need to repeat before we can 3peat…

  7. bobby s says:

3 peat? you gotta get 2 first

  8. Oscarisalakerfan says:

    Crazzzzzyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!

Lakers still most talented team in the NBA who knows if that if equates to more championships…..Hopefully it will!!!!!

    LAKERS all day baby

  9. ShowKase says:

Once again, Kobe is better than LeBron. Lol. You just cant say “no” to Kobe. *wink*

  10. DA ONE says:

wow i am extremely happy. Artest is such a great talent hes matured enough and now the lakers are the getting the best artest instead of the immature one. I hope they re-sign odom but if what the papers say its true demanding 10 million a season thats way to hefty hopefully he’ll sign for 6 million get that artest money.

Do it buss, get it done mitch!

  11. DvDJ Steve says:

from top to bottom lakers will have the best starting five in the L. If the keep LO, You can count on a three peat!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. kevin says:

As a laker fan this doesn’t make me very happy unless he agrees to take a maximum of 4 threes(which won’t make him happy). But if they get him and odom. Back-to-back then three peat…

  13. IrishBaller says:

Idk… I woulda preferred to keep Ariza and Odom, Artest is bad for chemistry… Ariza and Odom are goners

  14. ludakrshna says:

Well odom has bird rights so they keep odom, but artest replaces ariza. pity ariza went for the money and didnt stay on his hometown team

  15. JJ says:

no matter what the “other teams” do, LA will repeat! This is kobe’s decade!

  16. Dagomar says:

Damn. If the Lakers resign Odom as a sixth man that team just isn’t fair, especially not in this watered-down era. I think Artest is not nearly as good as he used to be but he’s still one of the better two-way players in the league. If anything this may show Lebron in 2010 that going to a big market and a big team does pay off: you can get big-time players on the cheap.

All that said, if I had to choose between signing Artest for 5 years and signing Ariza for 5 years, I choose Ariza.

  17. the truth says:

    here’s the starting five:

    pg – odom
    sg – kobe
    sf – artest
    pf – pau
    c – bynum

fish can start at pg and odom can start at pf

    add that together = dynasty

  18. DA ONE says:

while i agree artest does hold the ball too much, being in championship contention raises your level of play and also will give in and sacrfice for the better of the team. you saw it with odom this year, you can also see artest matured this year and now that hes in championship contention mode he’ll know what it takes just like what odom did this year. they shoulda sign and traded him though payroll management give up morrison last year of his deal young player in return that way it’ll ease the payoff for brown and odom.

  19. Lady Luck says:

I would have preferred for them to keep Ariza, but when it comes down to money, you have to look at it from a business perspective. If LA couldn’t get a deal done with Trevor, than Artest is certainly a great second option.

I think they will re-sign Odom now. If Bynum cannot get it together he will end up coming off the bench. Ron can also give them some minutes at PF if injuries come up.

Trevor to Cleveland to me is not a great fit because of the money that he wants and that he plays the same position as Lebron. I think they should go after Sheed or tried to get Villanueva.

  20. Lady Luck says:

If Phil is indeed coming back, don’t think he’s afraid to pull Ron from the game if he is holding the ball, shooting too much, or just messing up the offense. He will pull him, bring him over, coach him, and send him back in.

  21. misschick says:

Remember Odom and Kobe are buddies with Artest (at least off the court). Odom is going to resign for sure now.

  22. Doug says:

Ian i know your somewhere taking a rape shower…it’s over for the league we got artest I expect another 60 plus win season and a championship.

  23. Lee says:

Kobe and Phil will keep Artest in line (hopefully). Phil already has experience with Rodman coaching crazy players.
Hate to see Ariza go though. Hope he gets paid cuz seeing him play elsewhere for the same amount the Lakers offered will hurt.

  24. tweeter says:

Ariza’s just wants money and the Lakers won’t budge. He knows this is his last chance for a fat paycheck and I can’t blame him for wanting a bigger stack. I don’t think he’ll be as successful as he was in LA, but that’s his new team’s problem when he is signed for 5 years at 7-10 mil per.

As long as Odom is resigned (Lakers have his Bird Rights, it’s up to them to spend), Lakers will dominate.

The way I see it, they’ve traded age for talent. It’s obvious they want to win while Kobe is in his prime.

  25. chebs says:

    AMEN to this !

  26. smoove chips says:

woulda kept ariza in a heartbeat but this works for me.at least they didn’t pick up marion.i’d have been sick for days.if odom n bynum are on point ain’t nobody getting in that paint.

if that’s the case.ariza get that paper.head to portland and keep that game evolving.make those minutes count boy.

  27. POPPI GEE says:

LOL well well you truly just never know with Ron. That will probably be the most interesting part of him, Kobe and Phil co-existing.

I think he should have went to Cleveland but who knows why he didn’t.

Lakers will most def. have a little more heart and strength now. Wow.

I am not an LA fan but it’s got to feel good to be one right now.

Come on Houston pull something off!

  28. jonny taise says:

chemistry wise, i don’t think this will work. unless ron-ron changes his game a lot- offensively at least. i think ariza is a better fit for the lakers. he’s a solid role player who knows his position.

  29. D: Rockah says:

if Arest is coming for the Mid-Level then the lakers will definetly resign Odom. and then hopefully they can pull a sign and trade w/ Ariza so he doesnt get away for nothing. For example:

Ariza to Cavs for Ilgauskas OR Delonte and Hickson

    Ariza to Rockets for T-mac

Ariza to Nets for Yi(he would make the lakers a ton of $$ with jersey sales in LA)

  30. D: Rockah says:

i Think Ariza wants a bigger role and more money

  31. smoove chips says:

    uhhumph ….

    lakernation unanimously vetoes tmac.thanks.

    kupchack.don’t even think about it!!!!

  32. POPPI GEE says:

    lol ^^^ cold!

  33. Bron42 aka Had Springs Before Slamball says:

well fill got his jordan2 in kobe, hes got his rodman2 in artest…who plays pippen2? odom? hes too up and down for me. and 3 peat? they gotta win 2 first.

  34. DvDJ Steve says:

We need to trade sasha and morrison and then we can be able to sign LO without going into the luxury tax…… We can pick up a suitable back up for kobe for the vet minimum, getting sashas 5 mil of the books. Morrison is not going to get burn so he expendable.

    Starting Five
    pg – D Fish
    sg – Kobe
    sf – Artest
    pf – Gasol
    c – Bynum

    Bench
    G – J Farmer, S Brown, (A veteran Sg)
    F – LO, J Powell, L Walton
C – DJ Mbenga, (if not Mbenga A veteran center)

  35. EAZY DOES IT says:

I THINK THIS IS A GOOD MOVE BY THE L.A LAKERS ARTEST IS ONE OF THE BEST ON THE BALL DEFENDERS AND CAN SLOW DOWN OTHER GOOD PLAYER LIKE PIERCE,LEBRON,ETC AND IF THEY RE SIGN LAMAR THIS IS GOING TO BE THE TEAM TO BEAT IN THE PLAYOFFS AND THERE CHANCES FOR A REPEAT ARE VERY HIGH EVEN THOUGH ARIZA IS A GOOD DEFENDER THEY REPLACE HIM WITH ARTEST AND IT GIVES L.A A SOMEWHAT OF A THRID SCORER WHICH L.A. AWAYS SEEMS TO NEED BECAUSE YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR GOING TO GET FROM KOBE AND GASOL ODOM IS SOMEWHAT OF A WILD CARD SO WHAT YOU GET FROM ARTEST IS DEFENCE AND ALSO YOU GET A GUY AND THE WHOLE LAKERS TEAM THAT IS HUNGRY FROM A REPEAT.

THE LAKERS GOT A TASTE OF THE CAKE NOW THEY WANT THE WHOLE THING!!

  36. Cousin Larry says:

Haha I don’t think the Lakers are going to do a sign and trade with Ariza, they are not going to take back another 7-8 mil in money back. Hail to the Spurs cuz Ariza was the better fit because he could shoot the 3 ball and is long and athletic and he is 6 years younger. Lakers fans I won’t count my chickens before the eggs are hatched with Tru Warier, his bipolar ass might change his mind and yall will be without Ariza and Artest.

  37. Kermit The Washington says:

Thank you. If the Lakers actually have done this, THANK YOU.

Sure, we’ll wish we had Ariza in a couple years. But gimme a couple more rings, get Kobe up there in the 6 or 7 ring range, and we’re good. Let Bron get all he wants in NYC after that! LOL

  38. ludakrshna says:

Ariza just took artests place in houston. and gortat went to the mavs

  39. POPPI GEE says:

Yeaaa Rockets got Ariza and that is cool. Hmm Gortat have fun still being a back-up buddy.

Now who can the Rockets get for a center?

  40. banga says:

I’m not even going to try to figure out what the starting lineup but if odom resigns I know what the 4th Quarter lineup will be

PG: Kobe (the Offense Goes through him anyways)
    SG: Artest
    SF: Odom
    PF: Gasol
    C: Bynum

3 Seven Footers and Kobe and Artest… Scoring on LA won’t be easy

  41. POPPI GEE says:

Banga yes it will Bynum will foul out by 4th and Gasol plays no D really and Odom has never been a big defensive juggernaut.

You know I am loving this show called 4th and long and I think they should do something like that with the NBA but who would play the Irving guy for the NBA?

  42. D says:

Lakers have that toughness they really needed.
I think they will play like the old chicago bulls.
if anyone can control a play its phil jackson.
its going down in la next year!!!

  43. dk says:

Wow, a bigger player, a way better defender, a million times better shooter, than Ariza. Its a wrap boys…

  44. ponky_alolor says:

Great pick up by Lakers definitely. Big market = big names. Can’t help but think that Lebron is thinking about NY at least with this artest signing.

What just bothers me is that Ariza should have been financially rewarded by his hometown LA for his contribution for the ‘09 chip. I mean people like Jerome James got (over)paid by just showing up in the playoffs, Ariza was a vital cog in the Finals run.

He has improved steadily and usually you get paid and locked up long-term with that. Good thing he gets his due in Houston.

  45. Arrogant says:

    Ariza signed wwith the rockets!!!!!!!!

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4303862

  46. dk says:

@44 And a player thats smart takes the 5 mill to play wiuth a storied franchise idiot. Ariza really aint worth much more than 5 mill and instead of being greedy compete for another chip. Ariza’s gonna hate life next season…

  47. POPPI GEE says:

dk I hear you on that but on the real I think the Lakers had this as part of their master plan all along.

I just read a report where Ariza’s agent said it was never about the money. Dude said Trevor was not feeling wanted or needed.

Now I know this is a conspiracy theory but most everyone knows the Lakers been after Ron for a minute. So they accomplish getting the championship so why not now freeze Ariza out and make dude feel unwanted and then get Ron (who they likely already had plans to bring there and I bet Ron even knew it).

I’m just saying. Cause come on why would dude feel unwanted all of the sudden?

Still Ariza might be a poor man’s Ron but Houston has him and now just needs a center? Hmm any chance the Lakers will make Bynum feel unwanted?

  48. STATZ says:

as long as artest keeps his cool he’ll be aight and the lakers are gonna repeat an then 3 peat once again. i wished ariza would stay cuz during the victory parade he said he wasnt going anywhere

  49. Dagomar says:

Yeah dk, Ariza will hate life making an insane amount of money in Houston. And how exactly is Artest a “way better shooter” than Ariza? Who’s the idiot . . . .

Cavs are getting trashed in the free agent market next year, and I bet Bron’s paying attention.

  50. POPPI GEE says:

Say ya boy Ariza turned down an even bigger offer from The Raps (lol no one ever really wants to play there). I know the team sucks but is the place that bad as well?

  51. I'm a hater! says:

Damn I was hoping Adam the great white hope Morrison will get some burn this year. Now he will just be an expiring contract along with the two bigs and Fisher. I can see the Lakers moving Fisher and Morrison for a bad contract at the trading deadline. Isn’t Ariza getting the midlevel with Houston too, should of went to Cleveland so that he can stick it to the Lakers in the Final!

  52. dk says:

@48 your a fucking tool bro. So you would rather have the extra 3 mill and not make the playoffs or win a championship, great move. I hope he gets himself some nice cars because hes gonna have plenty of time to pimp them shits. Houston will maybe win 20,30 games…

    Ariza 3pt% 30

    Artest 3pt% 40

    Retard, do the math…

  53. dk says:

Huh, Im reading its not even that much more money then the Lakers offered him now…lol He signed for mid level exception, way to go asshole. Hope he still loves his ego come mid wauy through 2010…

  54. Dagomar says:

DK: Artest shot 40% last year; Ariza shot 46%. You can argue Artest is a better three-point shooter, but in the postseason Ariza shot 48% from the three and 50% from the field. Point is you said Artest was a way better shooter than Ariza. Obviously that’s not the case, and Ariza’s improving by leaps and bounds.

As for rather having 3 million and being one of the main options on a possible playoff team . . . yeah, that doesn’t sound too bad. He certainly won’t be “hating life,” as you put it. Grow up dude.

  55. dk says:

Great way to sew the numbers…. Like I said and the numbers show it, Artest is a better shooter. Im not counting fucking lay ups homo. Im talking jump shots, Im talking three pointers. Im talking about Ron nailing his open threes as a Laker. Im talking Ariza not bricking wide open threes and forcing a drive because hes scared to shoot. Wake up.

And its not 3 mill no more its less then 1 mill. Thats being an arrogant egotistical idiot and your the only moron this side of a basketball that cant see it.

  56. dk says:

    *skew the numbers

  57. Tim says:

    its just basketball guys…

  58. dk says:

@55 vMind your own bussines and tell your mom to stop calling me, were through.

  59. POPPI GEE says:

    Ron on Sportscenter right now!

  60. tp says:

dk, even as a fellow laker fan, i dislike you.

through all the bullshiz, a previous poster is right in that the lakers probably wanted artest all along and weren’t really serious about resigning ariza.

besides, who really knows what the lakers were offering ariza anyways? if YOU were ariza would you rather signa 1 year MLE for the lakers, or give yourself a guaranteed 5 year 30 mil contract???

lets be real here, i love ariza (and im a freakin UCLA alum for cryin out loud), but the man deserves to get paid.

  61. dk says:

@58 Thanks, you ruined my life, how will I continue, a person dislikes me that names himself after something that wipes asses. Good for Ariza, get paid, hope he can deal with losing…

The Lakers offered him a MLE, the Rockets offered him a MLE exception but with more years. I get it, dont explain it. When hes older he will regret doing it. Yeah, he could have a career ending injury so thats the only benefit of grabbing the cash and leaving a championship caliber team. Like I said I believe he will regret it…

  62. tp says:

you’re missing the point dk.. the lakers PREFERRED ARTEST OVER ARIZA.

stop making it seem like it was his choice and getting your panties up in a bunch about it

  63. dk says:

    @60

lol, I like ariza, but it seemed like he turned into a baby. He could have stayed in and still came off the bench, but poor baby didnt feel wanted. I wish he stayed but oh well. Ron is an upgrade if we make sure he takes his pills every morning were in there!

  64. tp says:

    @dk

all my laker friends are crying about ariza leaving so i kinda took it out on you. my apologies (sorta)

but yes artest is an upgrade. the lakers want to win these next few championships and the fact is, artest is better than ariza right now. a couple things about ron.. 1) he respects kobe. yeah he got into kobe’s face, but he’s competitive and doesnt stand for dirty plays (kobe can be dirty). 2) he’s been buddies with LO for a while, things will be fine. 3) he has been less crazy over the years. back to back dare i say?

  65. the cynic says:

i thought Ariza was upset about the length of the contract more then anything. If I already had a championship ring (where i made a huge difference), I would take the extra money. The life-span of a basketball player is short; you got to get while the gettin is good

  66. Kobeef says:

Ariza was in danger of being out of the league before he got traded to LA for Brian Cook and Mo Evans.

This was Ariza’s best chance to sign a large contract and he had to take it.

Can’t blame the Lakers for grabbing Artest. Ariza is a great kid but he’ll never be DPOY. Artest is one of MJ’s favourite players for a reason – the guy makes teams win. Artest’s impact on a team is huge. He is one of the few guys in the league who can guard Lebron, Pierce one on one.

Smart move by the Lakers. The fans might not get it but other players know that the lakers just became a nightmare matchup.

  67. POPPI GEE says:

Honestly Kobe can lock your pg down and Ron can lock your sg down or Kobe can get your sg and lock him down and Ron can lock the sf down, I mean all of that is just crazy at the many ways they can attack teams defensively and offensively now.

Really their is no real weakness on this Laker squad. Specially if you factor in that the 3 headed monster Law firm of Brown, Farmar and Fisher equal one decent floor general.

Honestly right now it’s going to be so crazy next year between what should be the haves and the have nots. Funny cause out west aside from the Spurs and Lakers no one is really doing crap.

The East is Banoodles right now with Boston with no real weakness, perhaps the bench. Cleveland, Detroit and Orlando.

These other squads better get it going or get left.

  68. Ian says:

    Lol@doug
    are u that pathetic?

To the smart laker fans wasnt keeping ariza better for team chemistry artest is kinda overrated offensively and shoots alot.

  69. L says:

Damn as much as I like Ron Artest in a Lakers uniform I wanted them to keep Ariza.

  70. I'm a hater and damn proud of it! says:

Ron Ron wants the fans to suggest which number he should wear, I’m thinking #73 like that other nut job the Lakers signed 10 years ago. Artest is the better player but Ariza was the better fit for the Lakers, they are gonna miss Ariza’s athleticism and youth. I’m predicting Artest will bite another player’s ear and get suspended before his tenure in LA is over. In two two years the Lakers are not going to be able to keep up with the young athletic teams in the league anymore. By 2012 teams like the Warriors, Kings, Thunder and Grizzlies will run them out of the gym. Now if only the Spurs can sign Rasheed and form the best 4th quarter lineup then we can have a exciting Western Conference Finals.

  71. Cousin Larry says:

Haha I can see it now, Farmar works all summer with Craig Hodges just like Ariza did and comes back and has a break out season as a the starting point(once Fisher’s body breaks down) and the Lakers shafts him and low balls him too. BTW I think Ariza must of been really happy to know that A. Morrison was making close to the mid-level exception too, because that great GM Jordan picked up his option for next season.

  72. ponky_alolor says:

@dk, yeah it’s laker fans like you that get non-haters to hate on purple and gold.

quit being the idiot, be gracious to Ariza who helped get kobe his 4th chip. he’s getting locked longer term and from last that i recall, Houston is a steady team that usually gets in the play-offs (injuries to T-MAC and Yao aside). With a 33million 6year deal, that is not losing entirely.

and you’re asking him to take less money and stay on the bench? this should be his first long-term deal. That isn’t greed, it’s about financial security.

  73. smoove chips says:

Artest is a great interview.Never a dull moment.Just caught him on sports center.

Much as I dislike shaq’s shennanigans dude is hella funny.
“i’m in the protection business,I’m here to defend the king.”..too funny

    Godspeed Ariza.

  74. smoove chips says:

    yo,am I hearing this wrong.They offered artest a one year deal ??!!

If tmac comes back with something to prove and they get gortat along with ariza and landry scola in the front court the rox gon be a decent team.

Oh btw, brooks gets buckets…Sucks that they play in the west but that is still a decent team that didn’t cough up that much for a solid player(i’m looking at you orlando with that shard paper).

ha poppi there might be hope after all haha

still can’t believe adam morrison has a ring.I’m think i’m hating.

  75. AB_40 says:

there won’t be enough balls. you forget that andrew bynum is a young big who wants to prove himself. ron artest is an erratic scorer but a great defender. from time to time he’ll take terrible shots. shots that make kobe from 05 06 give him an are you crazy look. I still think it’ll work as long as they keep winning and ron artest doesn’t give a big mouth to kobe

  76. POPPI GEE says:

I think Gortat is going to the Mavs. Time will tell though.

  77. dk says:

@72 Cool, I love loser haters like you and I love talking about how much better the Lakers and I are better than you, on and off the court. If you want you can blame me for the economy too, fag.

  78. dk says:

    @ the idiot

that stated Ron Rons offense is a little overated. Right, so is your moms oral skills. Hes just a 20 point per game scorer. That pretty much means nothing…

  79. JL says:

Kinda mixed about the outcome of today – real sad day to let Ariza walk, thanks for the good times man! Never ever forget that mad dunk on Grant Hill – INSANE!

But what a substitute – Ron Artest! It seems his bath robe wearing days are behind him and watching him on Sportscenter, you could tell he was amped at playing with Kobe and co! Signing for that kinda money also shows his commitment to the cause…

In saying that though, its a real unknown now with him coming in – Ariza proved he was a great fit and got LA outta some tight jams during their run. Artest on face value is a better player, but will he contribute in a positive way? Time will tell…

  80. ramon says:

naw suckas you all stupid 313 nigga detroit pistons are comin to whoop yo asses like in 04 maybe our fans will whoop artests ass again haha white shits and if we dont make it super mans waiting nigga yah fuck yal rip mj

  81. ticktock6 says:

Real_Ron_Artest isn’t the real Ron Artest on Twitter, in case anyone didn’t know. His real account is 96TruwarierQB.

  82. Sieeeu says:

@26: Well, there is always still that small possibility that Marion will opt for a veteran minimum with the Lakers for 1 season in exchange for Ring… Then, they will truely be sick on defense… lol

  83. sasta says:

IM A BIG FAN OF THE LAKER’S TEAM
I THINK LAKERS WILL GET A REPEAT!

I LOVE KOBE!HIS THE BEST PLAYER IN THE LEAGUE…wooohoo!
TRADING ARIZA TO RON ARTEST WILL GET A HIGH PERCENT OF GETTING A REPEAT!
    GO LAKERS!!!

IM SURE SHAQ WILL BE SHOOOOOOOOOOCKED!LOL

  84. ??? says:

    ShowKase says:

Once again, Kobe is better than LeBron. Lol. You just cant say “no” to Kobe. *wink*

bet you did not say no to KB24’s diC*..
    so gay!!!

  85. paul says:

HEHEHEHE! This guy is stupid men! He agrees or 32 million five year offer by the Lakers better than a four year 37 million offer by the Rockets.

  86. HoopStar says:

    LAKERS REPEAT
we are the best team in the leauge
really no1 can say anything ckuzz we r not involved in
the whole thing so all this fightin is bull

KB24 mvp hahahaha LAKERS R THE ISH
