Q&A with Asher Roth @ Converse Band of Ballers

Asher Roth

Asher Roth might not have been close to the best celebrity ballplayer at the Converse Band of Ballers earlier this week, but he was definitely the hottest name in the music game in the gym. The hip-hop Rookie of the Year candidate sat down for a few minutes between games to talk basketball, music and college…

Dime: Congrats on getting that first win earlier. Asher Roth: Yeah, the early W was a good look for sure. It was super important and it really helped that my teammates hit a few big 3’s (laughs).

Dime: Yeah some shooters are always nice to have on your team. You had your birthday the other day right? Asher: Yup, it was yesterday. So I’m 24 now – eight, eleven, eighty five. Read More »

Stephon Marbury: “I smoke marijuana. Yep.”

Stephon Marbury

I’m probably in the minority, but I don’t think Stephon Marbury eating Vaseline on-camera was THAT bad. While it’s become the definitive “crazy” moment of Steph’s summer-long campaign to end his NBA career and get himself a reality show, we’ve all got old-school home remedies we learned from our grandmas or aunts or moms that would probably look crazy if we did it on the Internet.

But if there was a chance that one NBA GM was willing to overlook the Vaseline thing and perhaps give Steph a chance to play, it’s definitely gone now. Read More »

Q&A with Jim Jones @ Converse Band of Ballers

Jim Jones

Before his “Jones Family” squad took the championship game at the Converse Band of Ballers tourney in NYC earlier this week, we got up with Jim Jones to talk music, kicks and basketball…

Dime: There looks to be some tough teams out there today. What’s the strategy going in and do you see any teams that will be competition? Jim Jones: We’re just gonna go hard out there man. We’ve been watching Pac Div play and their team’s looking kinda nice, but I’ve also been rooting them on cause we don’t get to see too many West Coast players out here in these New York streets. I know all the teams out here are gonna go hard, though, so it’s all water. Read More »

Who’s Better: Ray Allen or Michael Redd?

Ray Allen

We argue. You decide.

RAY ALLEN (by Ben York) “I want to take Ray Allen’s jump shot out for dinner to the best restaurant every night. I want to marry it and raise a family with it. It’s so f’ing pretty. It’s a g**damn thing of beauty.”

Couldn’t say it any better than that.

To be fair, as we all know, there are dozens of other assets to being a great NBA player besides a pretty jump shot. But, holy hell is that thing pretty; and it’s been consistently gorgeous for 14 years in the league. Read More »

The worst starter in the NBA

Ben Wallace

The names and the teams may change, but NBA training camp is annually littered with position battles. This year, for example, you’ll have Steve Blake trying to keep his starting PG job safe from Andre Miller in Portland; Brandon Jennings and Luke Ridnour (and perhaps Ramon Sessions) fighting for top QB duties in Milwaukee; and in Washington, Nick Young, Randy Foye, Mike Miller and DeShawn Stevenson will vie for the starting backcourt spot next to Gilbert Arenas, while JaVale McGee and Fab Oberto challenge Brendan Haywood for minutes at center.

Most of the time, you can predict the winners fairly accurately before camp even opens. Not so much in Detroit. Read More »
