The L.A. Times is reporting that Lakers assistant Kurt Rambis flew to Minnesota yesterday morning and is “likely” to be named the new head coach of the T-Wolves, with the only remaining obstacle being T-Wolves’ owner Glen Taylor signing off on the hire.

Considering the level of celebrity involved, this D-Wade vs. Pat Riley game of million-dollar chicken hasn’t come close to owning the headlines like it would if Kobe and his front-office were at odds. (Good thing that’s never happened before.) If you haven’t been following, here’s the quick version: Wade’s contract expires in 2010, Riley wants Wade to sign an extension before then, Wade wants to make sure he’s not playing for a mediocre team before he signs anything, Riley says he won’t spend a lot of money to improve the roster until he knows Wade is committed. And aside from Riley making an honest run at Lamar Odom and showing interest in Allen Iverson, neither side has hit the brakes yet. Read More »
For the last two All-Star Weekends, I’ve been relatively up-close with Dwight Howard and seen how busy he’s become. In 2008, Dwight’s weekend didn’t really get crazy until after the dunk contest, when everybody in New Orleans wanted to get close to “Superman.” This year, with Dwight being a full-fledged NBA golden child, the ASG’s top vote-getter, and adidas’ most high-profile All-Star representative, he was being pulled in 400 different directions from the time he landed in Phoenix until the time he left.
Considering his run with the Olympic team before the ’08-09 season, and his longer-than-ever postseason run this spring/summer, you’d think Dwight would take these offseason months to crawl into a hole and chill out before resurfacing for training camp. Read More »
While I don’t know what tomorrow will bring, I have to say that today could be the slowest day of the basketball year. Summer League is over, as is the USA Basketball mini-camp, so what is everybody doing? I have NBA TV on in the office right now, and they literally have nothing to talk about. Read More »
Just yesterday, I was watching an old Suns/Rockets game on ESPN Classic when I was reminded of the time Robert Horry threw a towel in Danny Ainge‘s face when Ainge was coaching Horry in Phoenix. (The only team with which Rob didn’t win a championship.) Like a lot of older controversial sports stories, I always wonder how things would’ve played out differently had it happened in 2009 with today’s media climate.
I thought that same thing just now when I heard about Al Harrington‘s interview with Bay Area radio station KNBR. Read More »
The reigning NBA Coach of the Year admitted he got outcoached in the Eastern Conference Finals. Or not. In an interview with the Akron Beacon Journal, Mike Brown owned up to some mistakes on his part in the Cavs/Magic series.
Anybody who knows me knows I’m all about reality competition shows. Whether it’s “4th & Long” or “Real Chance at Love” or “Project Runway” or “Dance Your Ass Off,” if I catch one episode, I’m usually hooked until the finale.
So about two weeks ago, I fell into “America’s Got Talent,” which if you’re unfamiliar, is basically “American Idol” but open to all kinds of acts. One of the first episodes I saw featured Acrodunk, a crew of guys jumping off trampolines and doing crazy dunks. Read More »
It got us to thinking (and looking on YouTube) for the J-Will of yesteryear, and we found this. Seems like a lifetime ago when Jason Williams warranted appointment viewing status.
