Usain Bolt is Not Like the Rest of Us
I mean, this is just crazy. Usain Bolt destroyed another record today, this time blasting through the 200 m in 19.19 seconds, .11 seconds better than the previous record (video below). In light of the Smack item this morning that relayed the story of a female sprinter being subjected to a gender test, we were joking about how Bolt needs to “tested for alien.” Or to quote Austin Burton, “‘District 9,’ starring Usain Bolt.”
Is there anything close to this type of dominance in NBA history? Wilt? MJ at his most vicious?
Here’s Bolt breaking his own 100-meter record earlier this week:

POPPI GEE says:
I think there has been that type of dominance in other sports, considering what the sport is.
Not taking NOTHING away from Bolt but he is running, not doing several things at once or relying on teammates for all races (I don’t know if he does relay or not).
You basically talking where he is continuously raising the bar and yea certain individuals in many sports I would say have continued to amaze and set new heights and standards.
Just stay clean pleaseeeee Bolt. Cause if he is doing this naturally. That is just nuts.

Because basketball is a team game, it’s very difficult to compare dominance in the two “sports.” That said, MJ at his prime looked like he should be playing in another league – he was just bored out there, and it seemed like he could do whatever he wanted at any time. That’s what Bolt looks like to me right now. If you want a current example, Phelps is pretty insane as well.
It’s sad though: it’s SO difficult for me to believe Bolt’s clean . . . .

@ dagomar. i feel ya. im watchin dude crush comp and all i can think about is marion jones killing her comp but look at how she ended up. its so hard to believe he is clean. however, how tall is dude…he looks like a giant compared to the cats he’s racing against.

That level of domination in the NBA is:
-Chris Paul vs Jason Kidd
-Kobe on a hot night
-Lebron with single coverage the whole game
-Shaq in his prime with single coverage

The good news is that Bolt officially tested CLEAN after the 100m race. I’m sure test results from the 200m will be released in a few days. Hopefully another runner will burst onto the scene with a sub-9.7 100m, or a sub-19.35 200m so that we can actually see how fast Bolt can run when there’s a chance he may lose. Honestly, when was the last time (save for a bad start or something) Bolt HAD to run all the way through the finish line? He has shown us some amazing things up to this point, but he’s competing with himself; I have no doubt in my mind he would hit 9.45 in the 100m and 19.05 in the 200m if someone were actually running WITH him.

First up – Usain Bolt been the next great sprinter since forever. He ran 19.91 when he was like 17.
But he only been doing it like this on a Senior-level for 18 months so people need to fall back when comparing him to someone who has years and years of dominance like Tiger or Roger Federer. At this point I think a comparison of Mike Tyson before it went bad is more fitting because in a short space of time he’s straight KILLING dudes.

Kobeef says:
To find a comparison to bolt you have to look at athletes who changed their sport.
What is unique about Bolt is that he is so tall (6′5) for a runner yet so fast. It make sense because of the stride advantage that taller runners would be fast once up to speed but before Bolt, no tall runners could pull off times like this because bigger bodies were thought to take too long to get up to speed.
I compare Bolt to Magic, who showed versatility that was never seen before in a big man. Tiger is also a change the game type athlete.

Remember Aron Phillips writing about playing pickup against Lebron? Here’s another description:

Turns out Bron’s final shot was from halfcourt and he was just playing with them. From Aron’s article I’d thought it was all-out war out there!

Thing is, Bolt does it with distance and doesnt look like it would take him much effort at all if he’d just try to stay with the rest. I think the only ballplayer who compares is Wilt, due to the huge athletic and physical differences between them and their peers.

For as flashy as Bolt is I wanna think he’s clean. But what he’s doing right now is nothing short of legendary. He seems to be in that young phenom category where as you realize he’s only gonna get better. The way he’s going is it inconceiveable that he runs a sub 19 200 m

still, if thats true, shits kinda scary. running over 10 metres per second in a submaximal effort? thats over 36 km/hr. thats over 22 mi/hr. thast fucking insane in the membrane.

There has never been someone as tall 6′5″ that could pick them up and put them down like this guy. That’s his secret, longer strides and thats why he doesn’t have to resort to steroids to break all those records. Tyson Gay who is 5′11″ said it looked like Bolts knees were going past his face an acknowledgement of Bolts size and stride.
