I Reminisce: Michael Jordan Posterizes Patrick Ewing

There are certain plays that just stand out in your mind over time. Having watched basketball my whole life, the seasons blend together and one game-winning shot is sometimes hard to decipher from the rest. But when it comes to certain plays, they will never leave your mind. These are the plays that you spent hours on the playground trying to perfect, and before YouTube, you bought all the videotapes you could just to seem them again and again. When it comes to Michael Jordan, this play is when he posterized Patrick Ewing.

This wasn’t just a play in a game. This was MJ basically telling the Knicks/Ewing – in a playoff game no less – that not only can he shake two defenders that are trying to trap him, but he can rip out Ewing’s heart mid-air like that dude in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

If you watch the video in slow motion, some say that Jordan actually elevates twice, just to make sure he is high enough. When he actually throws down, I wouldn’t be surprised if the dunk registered on the Richter Scale.

As for my favorite pairs of Air Jordans, I have to be honest with you: I never owned a pair of J’s growing up. It’s not that I wasn’t into sneakers, but living in Vermont wasn’t like NYC, Chicago or LA. But once I did get into kicks, my first and favorite pair was the Air Jordan 13.

What’s your favorite Jordan moment? What your favorite pair of kicks?

Earwig there KNEW he was going to be immortalized on that play, you can see it on his stupid looking face right after the play. And the way he tossed his hands around like a 2 year old afterwards is just classic.

    Fuck the Knicks.

The first pair of Jordans I bought for myself was the XIIIs (white with black). It is an astounding shoe, playing in it and chillin in it. I actually bought another pair last year I love them so much. I also bought a pair of VIs (black with infrared). The VIs were the first Jordans I ever wanted, AND DIDNT GET. When I envision MJ in his rise from Superstardom to Iconic, I think Jordan VI.

AP, I like you. You got great taste in kicks. You also sound like me, and I still have all them VHS tapes and dvds.

The best part is Ewing complaining that MJ pushed off during the dunk. Sorry Patrick but he was three feet higher than you. There was no way you were blocking that shot whether he pushed off or not.

My favorite Jordan moment was when he gave the Knicks a double nickel but he finished it off by giving the game winning dime to Bill Wennington. That’s kind of funny. His nickname is money and he is known for dropping a double nickel and a shiny dime!

My favorite Jordan shoes of all time were the Jordan IV’s. They were my first pair of Jordan’s and as soon as I got them I played football in them (something I would never do today). I had the white/red ones and I was crazy enough to put fat neon laces in them. Hey, it was the 80’s.

Pat Ewing must have gone home with his head hung low on many a night…regardless of whether or not Jordan was destroying his knicks…

and the 13s are masterpieces…It was a difficult decision for me to even wear them because i knew that i wasn’t going to get another pair once they became worn.

Didn’t have to watch the vid. This one’s etched in my mind. MJ fakes heading to the wing, spins back, rises on baseline, takes contact, cocks back, and throws down.

After the dunk he flexes and looks towards the crowd behind the basket, screaming, all the while being souped up by his teammates.

Yeah, I am Knicks fan, and yes, there are some things that you can see 4 or 5 times which you will never forget.

This one right up there with the ‘Vince Carter over Alonzo Mourning dunk’ for its ferocity.
