“It’s a recession, homey,” said my 61-year-old father. “Need some cash? Sell some clothes.” Easier floated than fulfilled, because what pops doesn’t understand is that any hoops-head worth his hardwood crafts his closet like a monk rakes a Zen garden; we catalogue and protect our collections like a posse of vigilante librarians who employ a hyperized Dewey Decimal system that exists only in our heads but is tacitly understood. And putting it all together on the daily is a truly holistic endeavor. Ask KG. Read More »
Yesterday in New York City, thousands of kids from all five boroughs made the trip to Lower Manhattan to attend LeBron James’ “More Than a Game” global tour. The elaborate event went down at South Street Seaport’s Pier 36 and served as the basketball version of Six Flags. Even though the King didn’t show up to the all-day event until 4 p.m., there were plenty of things to keep the fans entertained. Read More »
The reality is though that Delonte – who has always been great to Dime – has some very real, very serious issues. And it appears as though the Cleveland Cavaliers are at a loss on how to best deal with this latest development. Read More »
In yesterday’s gold-medal game at the FIBA European Championships, Spain made their opening-round hiccup against Serbia look exactly like what it was — a random hiccup. In a rematch with Serbia, Pau Gasol‘s crew waxed the opposition, going up by 15 in the first quarter, making it a 20-piece McNugget by the second quarter, and ultimately winning by 22. Big brother Gasol led the way with 18 points, 11 boards and three blocks, while Rudy Fernandez scored 13 and J.C. Navarro added 12 points. Ricky Rubio had 10 points and one assist. Spain dominated the glass, getting almost as many offensive boards (18) as Serbia had total rebounds (24). Read More »
After an up-and-down couple of weeks that saw them perform up to their potential and down to some lesser competition, Team Spain is right where they’re supposed to be at the FIBA European Championships: playing for the gold medal. In yesterday’s semifinal, Pau Gasol scored 18 points and Rudy Fernandez added 14 and three steals to lead Spain in a blowout win over Greece, while Ricky Rubio continued his underwhelming (at least stats-wise) tourney with a 5-point, 3-assist effort. Spain will face Serbia in the final, the team that upset them on the first day of the tournament. In Serbia’s semifinal, Milos Teodosic dropped 32 points (6 threes), and Nenad Krstic had 18 points to lead them past Slovenia … Read More »
We have to hand it to the DimeMag.com readers: You guys were way more entertaining in your comments about yesterday’s basketball news items than we could’ve been on a super-busy Friday in the middle of producing another issue. When news broke of Delonte West getting arrested for having THREE guns on him while riding a fancy tricycle (including a shotgun in a guitar case, Antonio Banderas-style), reader DH quipped, “I don’t think this is what LeBron meant when he said he wanted to surround himself with weapons.” Delonte got pulled over in Prince George’s County, Maryland, where, as reader Spencers Mom put it, “That’s how we go to the library.” … Read More »

If anybody in this world deserved to win $168 million it was Jimmy Groves. Back in 2003, the 49-year-old Madison Square Garden employee had the unfortunate task on cleaning up Rodney White’s vomit – Groves is the man with the mop at the 2:12 mark of the video below. On August 28, Groves won the Mega Millions jackpot. The Bronx native plans to buy a place in Manhatten, a car and take care of his mom and grandchildren. Also in the vid, check out the younger, skinnier and less-tatted Birdman on the Nuggets.
