We Reminisce: Vintage Travis Best
While everyone talks about Kenny Anderson, Stephon Marbury and Mark Price when they discuss Georgia Tech point guards, they shouldn’t leave out Travis Best. The McDonald’s All-American nicknamed “The Springfield Rifle” was a high school phenom and beast at G-Tech, finishing as one of only two ACC players to score over 2,000 points and tally over 600 assists in a career. While his success never quite translated to the next level, Best found his niche as one of the best backup point guards in the League. Still playing overseas, I’d take him as my backup PG any day.

Travis was a quality player. Most people remember him getting posterized by Scottie Pippen in the 97 playoffs though.

He was a solid player. He was like AI on Coach K’s College Basketball for Sega, however.

Another one of those players who looked good when they played for Larry Bird when he was coach, but became just another player when they went elsewhere, like Jalen Rose and Austin Croshere.

Jalen Rose was talented and was an integral part of the Raptors for a season or two.
Austin Croshere, robbed the Pacers blind based on one good year. What a crook!

Having grown up in NYC I’ve gotten to play on the same court as a couple of cats, who’ve made it to the L ( Shammgod Wells, Felipe Lopez,Lloyd Daniels,Mario Elie, Smush Parker…). The guy who impressed me the most though was Travis Best. I was in a pick-up game at W4th, with him sometime in the early 90’s. He was so fast and crisp with every move he made. He hit every shot, whether he was open or you were all over it. I also remember thinking how big and strong he was considering how small he looked on tv! This was way before AND1, and you didn’t really see pros in the street. Travis definitely made me apreaciate how good NBA players really were.

This is a nice feature you guys do. I know Best wasn’t a superstar in the league, but he was a baller nonetheless. Solid.

Can somebody please pick up all those names Hansosword just dropped? Thanks…
Travis Best was solid…he never was a superstar, but with the Pacers teams in the late 90s he was mad nice. I remember them giving the Bulls PROBLEMS.

Best seems like a good dude–happened to sit next to him and a buddy chilling at the bar a well-known Gentlemen’s Club not far from Georgia Tech a few months ago.
