Weekend Wonder:Kobe Bryant averaged 25 points, 3 threes, 7 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 3.5 steals and 0.5 blocks in two games this weekend. He shot 51 percent (19-37) from the field and 75 percent (6-8) from the line during this span. The Lakers are healthy and blowing out opponents on a regular basis, but Kobe remains an all-around fantasy stud no matter how many minutes he plays. Read More »
The scene inside NBA locker rooms after games is absolute chaotic. Especially when you are in Madison Square Garden, the media capital of the world. Not even fifteen minutes after the Magic defeated the Knicks 114-102 last night, reporters by the dozens packed inside the Magic’s compact dressing room to fire away questions to a bunch of half-naked players. While Dwight Howard, Rashard Lewis and Vince Carter attracted the largest crowds, second-year sensation Ryan Anderson somehow escaped the hoopla. Anderson was practically alone, looking relaxed near the back of the locker room with his feet dipped inside a large Gatorade cooler full of ice. Read More »
30. New Jersey Nets (0-17) — Can we just give Chris Douglas-Roberts (16.4 ppg) the Most Improved Player award out of pity? The kid only lost 10 games total in three years of college, and now he’s dealing with this.
29. Minnesota Timberwolves (2-15) — Once they get Kevin Love back, they’ll have a real good shot at winning 11 or even 12 games this year. Read More »
After Rajon Rondo and Michael Beasley put their stamp on last night’s Heat/Celtics game (more on that later), the old guys took over when it mattered most. Boston was up one with about two minutes left when Kevin Garnett hit a jumper to extend the lead to three, then after D-Wade missed a three, Ray Allen knocked down a triple that he was wide open for since Wade was flattened by a Kendrick Perkins screen. Wade got himself to the line and made a pair of free throws, but when Jermaine O’Neal had a chance to cut the lead in half with a minute left, he bricked both of his freebies. With 38 seconds left, Garnett (24 pts, 11-12 FG) hit another jumper that was essentially the dagger and celebrated by, um, smacking himself on the head multiple times like he was trying to shake some cobwebs out. That dude is stone-cold crazy and we love him for it … Read More »
At first glance, the Lakers smashing the Warriors by 30-plus doesn’t mean anything. They’re supposed to do that. But going a bit deeper, it’s big for L.A. to show they can beat teams that play any style — like Golden State’s running and gunning — while still trying to work Pau Gasol back into the mix and when Kobe Bryant has an off night. Kobe struggled with his shot (8-20 FG, 20 pts, 5 stls), but Gasol (22 pts, 12 rebs, 3 blks) and Ron Artest (19 pts, 7-11 FG) covered for him. When Kobe left in the first quarter with foul trouble, the team went on a big run without him and took an insurmountable lead. The Warriors have had some grueling games lately with a short-handed roster; it looked like they just ran out of gas Saturday … Read More »
What would be more frustrating: Having a behemoth like Shaq make your summer weight-lifting look pointless when he bowls you over and dunks on your head? Or getting lit up by Earl Boykins, who — once he’s done lighting you up — sits on the bench and you can see his feet swinging? … D-Wade and crew got a taste of that Boykins-fueled frustration last night, when Earl (10 pts, 9 asts) took over the fourth quarter and led the Wizards to a win. Creating space for mid-range jumpers and handing out dimes to Antawn Jamison (24 pts, 13 rebs) and the other bigs, Boykins played so good that Gilbert Arenas never saw the floor in the fourth. Buy Low: Chauncey Billups is struggling with his shooting and scoring right now, but the rest of his game is fairly intact. He remains a top fantasy point guard and can probably be nabbed for 80 cents on the dollar right now.
Devin Harris hasn’t been very productive since returning from his groin injury but he should eventually log more minutes and consequently put up numbers closer to where they were last season. Read More »
I’m hoping to go to my high school’s basketball scrimmage tomorrow and pull the same move that KG did in this vintage Nike commercial. Maybe it’s just me, but I did not remember Terry Porter being in this commercial. Hilarious.
