We Reminisce: The Legendary Allen Iverson

It still won’t hit me for a bit, but I haven’t been able to stop watching Allen Iverson highlights on YouTube ever since I heard the news. Watch this highlight video (to the tune of Nas‘ “New York State of Mind”) and leave your favorite Iverson memories in the comments below.

Damn, that was a great mix. I have to admit I always rooted against Iverson when he was in his prime. I just didn’t feel like he played the right way; I thought his stats were fool’s gold. But all that aside, he was without doubt the most talent “shorter” player to ever hit the NBA.

  2. ugly_fish says:

Damn those starry Orlando Magic jerseys are hot!

  3. dphoenix says:

NBA TV showed the 2001 All-Star game today. It was kinda surreal watching A.I. and Starbury trade clutch buckets and be the heroes of the game. Crazy to see the state they’re in now.

  4. Diggity Dave says:

    Matt Geiger sighting at 1:22!

  5. Liam says:

A great player, he will be missed, but lets ask the question:

How does he rank amongst his contemporaries? I’ll name four comparables:

    Pierce
    Vince
    TMac
    Ray Allen

    I say 1. Pierce 2. AI 3. T Mac 4. Vince 5. Ray

It is real close, T-Mac was probably the best at his peak, AI and Vince were the most entertaining, Ray was the best shooter, and Pierce was the most consistent and had the most well-rounded game, both offensively and defensively.

But the fact that I can name four guys who are arguably in his class says that he might not be a Hall of Fame shoo-in as everyone claims.

    PS
That last highlight is one of my favorite of all-time

  6. Judas says:

    AI crossing up Antonio Daniels…………..
    AI crossing up Jac Vaughn………….

    AI crossing up The GOAT!

    I practiced AI crossover!

  7. quest??? says:

damnnnn im sooo sadd, this was my favorite player, a hero of mine and i never had the pleasure of watching him play in an nba game. My favorite memory was the first and only time i saw allen iverson play. That was probably one of the happiest days of my life. It was a game against venezuela in the preolympics of 2003 that were held in puerto rico.

  8. quest??? says:

Allen iverson was the reason that i got into basketball and love basketball today. I remember watching him playing in his rookie year on television. Ever since then i was hooked. I feel as if someone i knew died man.

  9. go jazz says:

wow if he of just shut up 4 once he would probebly b in the talk as the best ever

  10. D.H. says:

    damn that crossover is filthy.

  11. S-SiN says:

There are so many memories.. I’ve been a die hard AI fan since his sophomore year in G-Town and seen him do many wonderful things on the court over the years, so like I said there are so many memories I thank him for. If I had to chose one, I’d probably write in the first thing that came to mind, which is his MVP perfomance in a 1997 Rookie Game. I think he had something like 19 pts, 8 ast and 3-4 steals. it was his first big time nation-wide exposure and he literally was ALL OVER THE COURT!

    Thanks Allen for your legacy.

I dont have much to comment on,because, everyone knows he was special.I guest, all of the haters can be happy now, because,it is a shame how you guys ran the man away.but when MJ skills were diminishing, the haters wasnt saying anything.but, the people who is doing all of the talking(including some of the coaches and GMs)whose teams are not going to make the playoffs, let alone, will never win a championship.Wake up,there are only about five teams, that is competing for a title. The rest playing for nothing.

  13. deeds says:

My favourite memory happened today when he retired. Glad I don’t have to hear about his selfish ass anymore. Yes I am a hater

  14. Bron42 aka Had Springs before slamball says:

    @deeds, your also a fag.

You may not like his personality but you can’t seriously knock wat he did for the game. My moment had to be the Tyrone Lue cross over, step over, stare in the finals. I still hope he latches on to a team like Orlando but if he’s really done….wow

  15. dagwaller says:

Hahahaha I love at 3:50 when AI takes off and turns to pass, and sees no one but Eric Snow following…so he turns to take the shot himself. Career in Philly in a nutshell.

  16. Yup! says:

PROPS TO WAYNE TAYLOR MAN…REAL TALK…ALL THE HATERS DO YOUR LIL DANCE…BUT WHEN THE MUSIC STOPS WE ALL GONNA MISS A.I!

  17. Khalvin says:

Sad day for me the league lost a great player. maybe not a team player, and yeah it is a team game, but iverson was a great player just never found the right system.

  18. Sparkyjay23 says:

And yet sir jack-a-lot still has trade value and AI has none? fuckin bogus

    you’ll be missed

  19. A.R. says:

Man…the mark A.I. left on the game will always have a place in my heart. The tattoos, braids, crossover, just go hard all the time attitude. The little guy didn’t fear shit! He was gonna give you problems everytime nite in and nite out. Say what you want about him not being a team player…but when you think about it…what team has he ever really had? Iverson never had a star aside from him in philly. Can you name 1 great player to come through philly during the Iverson era? An old ass C-Webb? Eric Snow? The guy has never had a super sidekick. The year they made the finals he wass the offense while the rest played defense.

A.I. wass a fuckin beast on the court and always gave you a show. Fuck what the media has made him out to be, peep the stats they speak for themselves

  20. V says:

I still can;t believe it. Whatever anybody says he IS a great player, and this shouldnt be happening but i understand why he made the decison. for the teams that didnt pick up the phone and call him this summer, shame on them, look @ what they’ve caused, danm

  21. William says:

wow that brought back some memories. too bad about the retirement. he started the arm sleeve craze. im gonna miss watching him play.

  22. e says:

HIS RETIREMENT MAKES ME QUESTION HIS LOVE FOR THE GAME SMH DUDE IS SELFISH TO THE MAX NO ONE WANTED HIM BECAUSE HE IS SLEFISH EVEN WHEN HIS CAREER IS ON THE DECLINE

  23. star_bury says:

    Favourite memories:

    1) The dunk on Camby.
    2) “Practice?”
    3) 5 straight 40+ as a rookie.

  24. budz says:

    everything!

the good and the bad of AI makes him AI.

so love him or hate him, one thing is for sure, he left a legacy in the NBA which we will forever remember. one of the best lil man who ever played the game.

  25. the cynic says:

too bad he’s the only one that doesn’t realize he has lost a step, maybe someone should send him his own highlight package

  26. Clarens says:

It really doesn’t matter what people said about AI, he will always be one the youngest player that cross MJ and still scored on him.. Philly should be a shame of themselves now after all AI done for them.. HE may have an attitude but that doesn’t mean he don’t get the job done, he loves this game of basketball and he will do anything even if he has to sacrifices his body just to win.
AI YOU’RE MY HERO AND YOU WILL ALWAYS BE ONE OF THE GREATEST PLAYER IN MY HALL OF FAME BOOK..

  27. Mike says:

Look A.I. won’t go to a contender 2 come off the bench & win a title because he’ll feel like he cheated to win it and if he plays 4 a a bad team (Memphis) there is no way he should come off the bench

  28. Thype says:

You can hate on his attitude, but you absolutely cannot hate on lil’ man’s heart.

AI always showed up, always got banged up, but he always came out and gave it his all.

By far the most talented pound for pound player to ever play in my opinion.

Would I want him on my team? Oh hell no, but I was always in the mood for a nasty ass AI cross over.
