Elton Brand’s Season Has Been A Train Wreck

Elton Brand

Just weeks before the start of training camp, I traveled to Philly to interview Elton Brand. Back then, he was all smiles and optimistic for the upcoming season. He had trained all summer in L.A. and was healthy for the first time in two years. His Sixers were a playoff team the year before without him and he figured he’d be that missing piece to get the Sixers out of the first round.

Now, some three months after I talked to him from the Sixers’ practice facility, Brand is anything but smiles. At 6-19, the Sixers seem to be light years away from a playoff berth. EB is having his worst statistical season as a pro: 12.6 ppg, 7.1 rpg, 1.4 bpg and 1.2 apg (all career lows). And the worst part about it, is Brand is no longer starting. The $80 million franchise player has officially been replaced in the starting lineup by Jrue Holiday, a 19-year-old rookie averaging 5.9 ppg and 2.7 apg.

Brand has not been shy about voicing his displeasure about not starting. After playing just 17 minutes in a game last week against Golden State, Brand took out his frustrations on his former teammate Mikki Moore, who had been starting for the Warriors this season.

“No disrespect, but [Golden State center] Mikki Moore, he gets to start and I don’t?” Brand told the media.

Coach Eddie Jordan has been upset with Brand’s production, especially his inability to dominate in the paint like he used to. With the Sixers losing 15 of their last 17 games, the pressure on Jordan to start getting wins is mounting by the day. Coach has started to experiment with a smaller lineup that caters to Andre Iguodala and Allen Iverson. But even if he switches back to a slower paced, half-court offense, he might opt to go with the younger Marreese Speights over Brand.

The reality of the situation is this: Brand doesn’t fit in well with this team and a move would be the best solution. There have been many rumors in the past month saying the Sixers are aggressively shopping the former two-time All-Star. The problem is getting takers. The demand for a 12 and 7, injury-prone power forward with a huge, long-term contract, isn’t exactly sky high. So the Sixers and Brand may be forced to make the best of the situation and find a solution.

Despite being unhappy, Brand vows to stay professional. For now.

“With my temperament, after losing so many games, I just want to win,” said Brand, who said he expects to continue in a reserve role. “Jordan knows I’m not going to not be professional and be a detriment to the team.”

Feel bad for Brand, this dude was a beast for so long, no reason for him to drop off like that.

its not good when your player starts acknowledging the head coach by his last name not Coach ha

    Train wreck is an understatement..

He injured his Achilles didnt he?? sometimes that shit dont heal right.. but i hope he makes it back.. 20&10 players dont come around often..

Sixers management made the bed with Brand’s signing and now they’re just going to have sleep in it. There’s no way anybody is trading for Brand. It’s strange but the 76ers might be the only team paying two guys franchise player money who neither of which are franchise players.

You have to go to Phoenix or Denver. He’d return to All Star shape in no time. I’d even send him to Orlando for their 2 bigs. What a GM i’d be. I have good eyes for talent & the game. If he had a pg he’d get the ball. He always had a point guard & even better team. From AAU on. He’s never been a give me the ball & get out my way. Don’t be mad at him. He isn’t healthy. You payed him & constructed this horrid excuse for a N.B.A. team. Dalembert 60 or whatever. Iggy isn’t a max player either. Learn the game

Brand is what he is an unathletic 6’6 “POWER FORWARD”.
He never banged in the post, hes a face up jump shooter and he may from time to time post up on a miss match. He is a great option as a back up, against teams backups he wont be such a defensive liability do to his lack of size, plus he can score on the likes of Sheldon 4HEAD Williams-Parker. Injuries took what lil athletic ability he had away from him. I think he should stop complaining and get in where he fits in, i am Elton lets not act like Philly doesnt have there own things to complain about, you do get paid “BIG MONEY” for being basically Jason Maxiell with less heart.

    @ Eyes

Your eye for talent must have a hudge “COCK” blocking its vision. Elton Brand is a 6’6 unathletic center, what does he do on the court that makes him so talented? He basically faces you up and shoots a jumper, “Zach Randolph style” and get shit on by power forwards onthe blocks.. If you were a GM you wouldnt even watch games you would go by the numbers, which would get you fired ASAP.

    @ AdvancedMind

have you seen Brand play PRE-Sixers?

  • Gunner J. Matthews

I guess he shouldnt have left the Clippers

  • the cynic

serves him right for his 11th hour escape from the clippers

^^^Completely and totally and 100 percent agree!

Still lol that is a heck of a lot of money to be sittin on the bench.

I would say go to Houston, but if I am correct I think they have their hearts and minds set on trying to get Bosh.

Plus I don’t think Houston wants any parts of anyone coming in with an “injured” past.

On the real Portland should be trying to get dude.
I am impressed with him keeping a level head, cause to have a dude who is averaging way less than you take ya spot is ill. Still the first time they tried it…Philly did win.

pheonix and denver both run right so how does he work there idiots the best place for brand is mike fratello’s clevland cav’s

  • Guitar Hero

He would thrive next to Timmy as a Spur.
Unfortunately, he signed a megadeal with the Sixers. So, unless he wants to say goodbye to the dollar signs, deal with it.

  • Eugene

Um, how can he be a “former two-time All Star?” Did the NBA strip him of his All Star appearances? He is still a two-time All Star, dummy.

Does Dime employ editors or proofreaders, or can any hack off the street just start posting?

Mikki Moore comment is hilarious. Some of the guys starting in today’s league boy aren’t better than players in the Premier Basketball league. Let alone the Dleague. This year if Eddie Gill or Mike Wilks are called up 1st I’ll jump I swear. Anthony Tolliver is that a new April Fools joke. I thought it was December. Out of all the people in the D-League come on know people. Who’s in charge of scouting,DLeague etc. How do you assess talent??????? To not draft some people or keep players out the L. Just doesn’t make sense nor add up. What’s out there everybody should be ashame of themselves.

Anthony Tolliver who is that guy???? Can he contribute. Chris Hunter is the best big man available. Eddie Gill. The wrong message is being sent. In the system eyes it’s exactly how they want in. They don’t want players who are better pushing or being better than the so called best the league has to offer. A sham. James White,Cheyne Gadson,Dre Barrett, can’t get any kind of minutes in the best league in the world. Mike Conley & Chris Duhon would struggle in the D-League. I’m getting mad man. How do you sell a deserving player a fools gold dream. Flat out you wont or can’t make it If those in power don’t know you or like you. Doesn’t matter how good you are. This is the biggest problem with the league.

The most deserving & sometimes hardest workers are not being rewarded. I could tell you for a fact. If just 5 players who you never heard of. Were to enter league you’d be amazed beyond your wildest dreams. The question then would be Why???????????????? Do you know how many fans Will Bynum has & how good he is for the league. He’s been deserving an long overdue on his journey. Just figured he could have gotten injured or lost along the way & given up. How well would Detroit fare w/o him? There are too many elite players with skills. Way better than the avg N.B.A. player that are being kept away from this beautiful game of ours. Many have worked too hard & sacrificed so much to just watch it go down the drain.

I don’t feel bad for him. that’s karma for leaving the Clippers high and dry. what goes around, comes around

  • Kyle

If he went to Phoenix, the training staff would fix him, and with their unselfish play, Nash would easily boost his numbers.

Or… I still think he’s better than David West. Paul would know how to utilize Brand. The Hornets rarely run full throttle like the Sixers, and he could help them fight their way into the 8th seed.

So yes, Brand could work with the Suns. Nash and Hill are too smart not to find a way to fit him into their system. Unlike Shaq, he wouldn’t turn them into a half court team. And he’s always been a beast with blocks and boards(unlike Amar’e.)

  • Itsakademiks

Eyes didn’t wilks get signed by okc a few weeks back?

got the game winner today against the celts! so much for a trainwreck season huh?

  • Maynard

Brand’s stuck in a system that doesn’t suit him. Get him somewhere he can get it in the post and watch him again become useful. (Though one can make the argument that he’s useful now, averaging 13.6 points, 8 boards, 1.7 blocks, solid percentages, in December so far — 7 games, 4 starts) The decline of scoring can probably be attributed to lack of opportunity — his 10.6 shots per game is about 4 fewer lower than any pre-Philly season. Let’s see him somewhere they’ll use him right.

AdvancedMind, do you watch games or do you just skim through them?

Brand, “Bad Porn” Maggette, Carlos “The Price Is Right” Boozer, Grant Hill, Chris Duhon, etc…

If anyone out there gets a chance to go to Duke, better take advantage. Seems like them Blue Devils always get overpaid by the shitload without doing crap even when they’ve proven otherwise.

The reality is $80 million and that after brand made that comment, mikki moore got injured and is out 3 months.
