Pau Gasol has only played in 50 percent of the games this year, yet his impact has been greater than most of the guys who have played the entire season. After missing the first 11 games with a hamstring injury, Gasol came back and immediately helped the Lakers win 10 straight games. The team is now 12-1 since the All-Star forward returned to the lineup. Read More »
MICHAEL BEASLEY (by Jack Jensen)
All previous off-court problems and lack of haircuts aside, both Michael Beasley and Luis Scola have become two of the most solid role-playing forwards in the League. Whereas I’d be happing having either guy grace my team’s frontcourt right now, Beasley has a better feel for the game.
Not only does Beasley’s future burn brighter than Scola’s, he has the chance to become a perennial All-Star — an opportunity that is fading for the 29-year-old Scola. Read More »
Whether there’s any truth to it or not, Kobe Bryant has always been accused of trying to be Michael Jordan. When he chose #24, they said he was literally trying to one-up The G.O.A.T. When he plays hurt or sick, they say he’s trying to re-create the Flu Game. When he hits a game-winner, they say he swagger-jacks MJ’s celebrations. When he bares his bottom teeth, they say he’s trying to copyright his own signature “face,” since Mike already had the tongue-out thing. Last night in Chicago, Kobe didn’t have to try to be Jordan in the house that MJ built; you just couldn’t help but see the similarities. Read More »
This morning in the Daily News, Frank Isola wrote about the possibility of the Knicks landing D.J. Augustin, a guy who has been a their radar ever since he entered the League. According to a team source, New York had extensive talks last season with Charlotte regarding a deal for the second-year guard, but while Larry Brown is more than willing to trade him, he has been overruled by Michael Jordan. It is about half-an-hour before the Rockets and Pistons tip-off in Houston, and reports are beginning to surface that Tracy McGrady will make his season debut tonight.
Mac is only expected to play briefly during the first half, so this doesn’t appear to have anything to do with Trevor Ariza being unavailable due to suspension. So far it’s unknown whether McGrady will start or come off the bench — but you know how those former NBA scoring leaders can get if you try to make them a backup. Read More »
A few years back, Ron Artest used to write a monthly column in Dime called “Ask Ron.” Fans could write in and ask Ron-Ron anything about basketball and life. A lot of our readers came to Artest for relationship advice. One of our favorite submissions was when someone asked, “Yo, Ron, I recently broke off an engagement with my ex. Should I get the ring back? – E” Read More »
Of all the WTF-inducing headlines I expected to see coming from Golden State Warriors camp this season, “Anthony Randolph is on the trading block” definitely wasn’t one of them.
Not to say I straight-up inhaled the Kool-Aid being served around the Bay Area over the summer, but I could originally see why a lot of people would think Randolph is the future of the franchise. Read More »
To put it lightly, Dwight Howard had a hard time getting easy looks at the basket against the Pacers last night. One of the few opportunities where he was able to do what he does best without much interference came in the second half, when Vince Carter drove left seemingly on a mission to draw a foul, and when no whistle came, threw up a blind … something … with his back to the basket that turned into a perfect lob for Dwight at the rim.
It was kind of strange to see: One guy who used to be (and sometimes still is) in that special category of “Just throw the ball somewhere near the rim and he’ll dunk it,” working the other end of the equation and finding today’s premier finisher of bad passes. Read More »
