Reggie Miller: Coming To A Theater Near You

Pacers

With the exception of Michael Jordan, no opposing player has had more dramatic moments in the Garden as Miller. Everything from his clutch shooting to his trash talking to Spike to his theatrics with the crowd. Who could forget his 8 points in nine seconds during the 1995 Eastern Conference semi-finals in MSG? That was also the time he gave the choking sign to Spike in the front row. Garden fans hated him and Miller embraced the role of being the villain. But in the end, Miller respected Knicks fans and vice-versa.

The love-hate relationship Knicks fans and Miller have is the subject of an ESPN documentary that is set to debut at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival in January. The movie, which is titled “Winning Time”, will also air on ESPN in March of 2010. In the film, Miller not only talks about his most memorable games at the Garden and his relationship with New York fans and Spike, but he also shed light about how his sister Cheryl used to bust his ass in one-on-one games until Reggie was an adult.

Miller’s upcoming flick made me start thinking about some of my favorite basketball documentaries. Of course, “Hoop Dreams” is probably my favorite. Being able to capture nearly five years of those two Chicago kids’ high school careers was incredible from both a basketball and a human interest element. I also enjoyed “Through The Fire”, the Sebastian Telfair documentary about his senior year at Lincoln HS in Brooklyn and LeBron’s recent flick “More Than a Game” too.

Which is the best basketball documentary of all-time?

The Larry Bird documentary was good. I can still hear John Mellencamp singing “Small Town” in the background.

Anyway, cannot wait to watch “Winning Time”.

As far as basketball documentaries go, Hoop Dreams is the G.O.A.T. & the blueprint. It not getting any nominations is still talked about by mainstream and niche outlets even to this day when Academy Award and other movie honor time comes around.

Being a Chicago kid, and watching those guys (specifically Arthur Agee) walk up and down the same streets i was on and playing at the same courts i played on, and actually playing for the same highschool coach I played for (Dennis Doyle was an assistant on that team) will always keep Hoop Dreams #1 for me.

I didn’t really enjoy the Sebastian Telfair thing, though. It just seemed so…. I don’t know. He’s not a likeable character thats all.

I have yet to see the Lebron movie.
