Maybe it’s just us, but it seems O.J. Mayo has been playing noticeably better ever since the whole USC thing finally came to a conclusion. Since the turn of the new year, around the same time the ‘SC sanctions were handed down, O.J. has been averaging 20-plus points per game and seems like he’s literally had a weight lifted off his shoulders — getting up for more dunks than usual and showing more hang time and creativity in the air … Mayo scored 19 last night in an upset win over San Antonio. The Grizzlies were in control most of the second half, but the Spurs chipped away and cut the lead to one on Roger Mason‘s jumper with 41 ticks left. Read More »
Having literally been beat up on the road lately — Steve Nash is still in stitches from getting his mouth busted open in Indiana the other night — the Suns appeared to have a big win at Atlanta in their pocket last night. With 10 seconds left and up by two, Nash was going to the line, where he’s automatic in game-icing situations. After Nash (12 pts, 11 asts) did his part to make it a four-point game, Mike Bibby missed a three and Josh Smith got fouled on the putback. Smith (20 pts, 15 rebs, 4 blks) made one and missed the second, but Jamal Crawford — the skinniest and probably least physical guy on the court — snuck in and got the offensive board and bucket. As if the Nets didn’t have enough basketball reasons to waive ’06 NBA Draft bust Shawne Williams — who they just picked up from the Mavs in the Eduardo Najera trade — he gave them a perfectly understandable reason off the court to cut him loose.
Williams was indicted earlier this week on eight drug charges in Shelby County, Tenn. — four counts of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, and four counts of conspiracy to distributue. According to the Memphis Commercial Appeal, the drug in question was “codeine-based syrup.” Read More »

Gilbert Arenas has officially entered a “guilty” plea in a Washington D.C. courtroom to his single felony count of carrying a pistol without a license.
Without a jury trial, Arenas is expected to be sentenced on March 26. Despite Gil being a repeat offender (he was convicted of a gun charge in 2003), the prosecution reportedly recommended a lower-end sentence; the minimum being six months in jail and the max being five years. Read More »
Being that they’re young, rich NBA players, we can’t imagine it’s too hard for Jason Thompson and Donte Greene of the Sacramento Kings to pull some good looking girls. One reason I love sports is that it provides options and possibilities for kids who may not realize how many options they have. And at the same time, I hate that sports has helped create a climate where those same kids often feel they only have three options: entertainment, sports, or crime. Likewise, I love hip-hop for the artistic expression, but hate that so many artists will take that artistic license and never think to do anything positive with it beyond putting their boys on.
And while I love college ball in part for the undying passion fans have for their team, I hate when that passion goes overboard and causes fans to act like assholes. Read More »

Somewhere in the world, Manny Leaks, Jeff Halliburton and John Q. Trapp are all probably keeping a close eye on the New Jersey Nets’ season. Not because they’re necessarily fans, but because their infamous 36-year-old record could be broken by the Nets this season. Whether they want to admit it or not, Leaks, Halliburton and Trapp were all members of the ’72-73 Philadelphia 76ers squad that went 9-73, which was the worst record in NBA history. Read More »
