One night after his back locked up in San Antonio and forced him to sit out the fourth quarter of a big game — which, knowing the man, means it had to have been debilitating pain — Kobe Bryant was in Dallas on Wednesday trying to give it a go against another West contender. For the first half of Lakers/Mavs, Kobe was obviously hurting, gingerly running around like late-model Patrick Ewing and serving as not much more than a decoy. In the second half he was moving a little better, but in true dramatic fashion, saved his best for last: Tied up with 42 seconds left after Dirk Nowitzki (30 pts, 16 rebs) hit a three, Kobe got a clear-out on Josh Howard, milked the clock, took him to the right elbow and dropped a pull-up jumper for the go-ahead bucket. Arguably, the two hottest teams in the West cross paths tonight. The Spurs, who are winners of eight of their last 10 head into Oklahoma City to face the Thunder, who have also won eight of 10. The two teams last met back in mid-November, where the Thunder rolled into the AT&T Center and came out with a 101-98 victory. Well, this is a different Spurs team now, so OKC doesn’t exactly have San Antonio’s number quite yet. Read More »
Mike Conley hit the genetics lottery. The son of an Olympic gold-medal triple jumper, he is a natural athlete. After he and Greg Oden led Ohio State to the NCAA national title game as freshmen, Conley was drafted fourth overall in the ’07 NBA Draft.
Since then, he has gone from Memphis’ point guard of the future, to backup, then back to being a starter again. Read More »
This goes out to our people up North. Against the Pacers a few nights ago, Hedo Turkoglu showed off his passing skills by throwing this Jason Kidd-esque underhanded alley-oop that was right on the money for DeMar DeRozan to flush it home. This clip reminds us of the days he played in Sacramento, where everybody on that team (Chris Webber, Jason Williams, Vlade Divac) could pass and they did so with a little flair.
The Boston Celtics may be sitting atop the Atlantic Division with a pretty 26-10 record (and a prime spot HERE), but all is not right in Beantown. Obviously, they’re dealing with some injuries right now – the KG situation is particularly concerning – but one would assume that for the most part, those injuries will pass. At times the Celtics have also looked slow, old (Paul Pierce at times) and out of shape (Rasheed Wallaceall the time), but these guys are vets and former champs. Boston fans have faith that they’ll find ways to win when it counts.
But none of those issues are what concerns me most about the Celtics. There’s a move they need to make that would immediately solve multiple issues for them, would give them a boost on offense and defense, and would make them the clear favorites in the East again. Read More »
Sure, they lost last night. But you can’t help but notice the latest surge in the Clippers’ play in the last few weeks. Starting New Year’s Eve, the Clippers have won four straight (three of which were against playoff teams) before losing a close 102-100 game to the Grizzlies last night. One of the main reasons to L.A.’s strong start in 2010 has been the eye-opening play of Baron Davis. B-Diddy has averaged 19.5 ppg, 11.3 apg, 5 rpg and 2.8 spg in the new year. Against Memphis, he had a triple double: 27 points, 12 assists and 12 rebounds. Read More »
