Late last night I was watching Rick Pitino weekly Louisville coach’s show — one of my favorite things about having 264 sports channels — when Pitino made a great point about defensive mentality.
Essentially, Pitino said, there are guys who get upset when they miss a shot, but aren’t nearly as bothered when they get beaten off the dribble. “We’re not going to be a good team until it bothers us more to get beat defensively than it bothers us to miss a shot,” he said. Read More »
It’s not that Rashard Lewis isn’t clutch. Anybody who watched him take down the Cavs and scare the Lakers with some big-time shots in last year’s playoffs knows better than that. But the way Raw Lew sent the Celtics home last night — not with a corner three or a turnaround jumper, but with a strong drive to the cup past one of the best defenders in the world — it was the last thing you’d expect out of him … Read More »

I’m not sure when NBA coaches were supposed to hand in their All-Star votes, but judging by Chris Kaman‘s reported snub, the deadline might have been after last night’s Nets/Clippers game. Kaman has been vying for an All-Star spot, bolstered by his near 20-and-10 stats but hurt by the Clippers’ record. In his last All-Star audition, however, he had a hand in allowing Kris Humphries to drop a career-high 25 points — including the dunk you’ll see below — and L.A. lost to the lowly Nets. After the jump, Terrence Williams puts another black mark on Kaman’s All-Star resume.
Where should the NBA/NCAA draw the line on referee criticism?
In the first half of last night’s Bulls/Thunder game, Joakim Noah made like Christian Okoye and ran over a stationary Nenad Krstic (outside the no-charge circle) on his way to the rim. Krstic was called for the foul.
One of OKC’s announcers started to tear into the refs, but stopped himself short and settled for making a joke about Noah playing running back for the Bears. But in all honestly, the announcer had no reason to hold back. Read More »
It seems like all the attention of All-Star Saturday Night goes to the Dunk Contest. That’s completely understandable, considering the other events they do or have done in the past like The Skills Challenge or 2Ball (remember that?). One event that always has the potential to be exciting is the Three Point Shootout. Who could forget that image of Larry Bird hitting that final shot and raising his arm in the ’88 Three Point Shootout in Chicago. Read More »
The people have spoken. After tons of official entries and lots of back and forth in the comments section of the site to give Big Baby a new nickname, it came down to two potential winners. The first was Poppi Gee‘s entry of the “The Gooch” (the invisible bully from “Different Strokes”), followed by write-in candidate “The Big Thicket,” which earns points for creativity.
Frank Isola of the New York Daily News is reporting that David Lee will not be representing the Knicks at the All Star Game next month. A source told Isola that the 6-9 forward will not be one of the Eastern Conferences reserves that will be officially named later tonight. Read More »
