Nonsense Standing in the Way of Knicks Making Best Run at Lebron and Chris Bosh

LeBron James

Maybe it’s just last-second posturing to swing the best deal possible for the Knicks. Maybe Donnie Walsh knows something that no one else in basketball knows. Whatever it is, it appears that the piece standing in the way of the Knicks potentially being able to sign both LeBron James and Chris Bosh (or someone on his level) is … Jordan Hill? Read More »

Grant Hill’s game day routine

Grant Hill (photo. Keith Allison)

NBA players are mostly creatures of habit. Whether it’s the superstars or the guys fighting for roster spots, you’re likely to uncover a similar pattern of routines: from workouts to eating and sleeping rituals to post-game relaxation tactics employed on a daily basis.

At 37 years old, Grant Hill has endured injuries that would have ended other men’s careers, and yet he still excels today thanks to discipline with old habits and learning to adapt to new ones as his health becomes increasingly crucial. The 15-year vet, averaging 11.3 points and 5.3 boards as the Suns’ full-time starting SF, takes us through his typical game day routine: Read More »

NBA Trade Rumor: Blazers Deal to Acquire Marcus Camby is Official

Marcus Camby

Yahoo! Sports’ Marc Spears says that the yesterday’s rumored trade between the Clippers and Blazers that would send Marcus Camby to Portland is a done deal. Spears is reporting that the Blazers agreed in principle Tuesday to acquire Camby from the Clippers in exchange for forward Travis Outlaw, guard Steve Blake and $3 million.

To us, this seems like highway robbery for the Blazers, and we’re not the only ones. Read More »

Nate Robinson is a Top-10 dunker all-time

Nate Robinson

One of the questions I posed to the Dime crew over All-Star Weekend made it into this morning’s Smack:

Doesn’t Nate Robinson have to be considered one of the greatest NBA dunkers of all-time?

Write me off as a Seattle homer if you want, but honestly, I’d be saying the same thing had Nate grown up in Miami or Madrid. Because not only do the facts work out in Nate’s favor, almost any basketball fan’s subjective view of what makes a great dunker also matches up with Nate’s aerial resume. Read More »

Villanova’s Antonio Pena finally making a name for himself

Antonio Pena, Villanova University

Once upon a time, Antonio Pena was known only as one of the “other guys” on Sebastian Telfair‘s team at storied Lincoln High School (Brooklyn, NY). But after a journey that has since taken him through two years at a prep school in Connecticut, knee surgery and a redshirt season, Pena has re-emerged as one of the key players on a Villanova University squad contending for a national championship in 2010.

Pena, a 6-8 junior power forward, is averaging 11 points and 7.5 rebounds for the Wildcats (22-3, 11-2 Big East), ranked No. 3 in the country before last night’s loss to UConn. Read More »

Baron Davis Launches The BD DOOM At Li-Ning USA’s Grand Opening Reception

Baron Davis at Li-Ning USA's Grand Opening

After spending a week in Dallas, I was ready to go. And while heading back to New York was high on my priority list, I decided to make a pitstop in my old stomping grounds of Portland, Ore. Having gone to school in P-Town, any chance I get to make it out there, I take. So with Li-Ning USA‘s grand opening reception taking place on Monday, it was a no-brainer. Read More »

NBA Trade Rumors Everywhere: Updates on Amar’e, Jamison, Camby, the Blazers, and more

Travis Outlaw

With a day off in between the All-Star Game and the continuation of the NBA schedule, Monday was a time for trades, post-trade fallout, and trade rumors … As we wrote this column, the Blazers and Clippers were reportedly very close to closing a deal that would send Marcus Camby to Portland for Travis Outlaw and Steve Blake. The Blazers have to do something to cover the hole left at center by Greg Oden and Joel Przybilla‘s injuries, because going into the playoffs with Juwan Howard starting in the middle is just asking for a first-round exit. Basketball’s Urban Legends

Joe Johnson (photo. Zach Wolfe)

Any time a basketball game is played in a dome, you know the announcers and analysts are going to wear out the “shooting backdrop” angle and talk about how hard it is to hit jumpers.

Last night’s All-Star Game was no different. Against the backdrop of 108,000 people in Cowboys Stadium, with plenty of shiny watches and Texas-sized cleavage to provide even more distractions, the familiar story line came up even though both teams actually shot the ball pretty well (15-38 from three-point range, or 38 percent).
