Wizards and Zydrunas Ilgauskas Agree to Buyout (Updated)

Zydrunas Ilgauskas

Everyone and their mother knew that it was only a matter of time before the Wizards and Big Z came to an agreement to buy out the contract of the center they acquired in the Antawn Jamison trade right before the deadline. It was pretty clear that Washington was only interested in the cap space that was going to be provided by his expiring deal and that he would never see a second in a Wizards uniform.

So what’s next for Z? Everyone is also assuming that he’s a lock to re-sign with the Cavs and Ilgauskas is so eager to get back that ESPN’s Ric Bucher is reporting that Read More »

Create-a-Three: Building the Perfect NBA Small Forward

Carmelo Anthony, Dime #53

The NBA is going the way of the wing. While some people cling to the idea that you still have to build a winning franchise around a big man, and others see a future where point guards run the show, this season has done nothing but prove me right on something I’ve been saying for a while now — that the next several years will belong to small forwards.

All due respect to Kobe, but you could argue that LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, and Kevin Durant have been better than any three players on the planet this year. And even after Kobe reaches NBA old-age, those three should still be in their primes and setting the standard by which most other players are judged. Read More »

Durant meets his match in San Antonio; Dirk makes it rain on L.A.

Kevin Durant

A few minutes before last night’s Thunder/Spurs game in San Antonio got underway, Kevin Durant was on the OKC bench casually chatting with Bruce Bowen. After the game started, KD must have felt like Bowen had never left. Facing a combination of quick, strong, tough and crafty defenders, Durant was harassed into his worst offensive performance in about two months … KD’s jumper with 3:30 left in the third quarter was the last time he saw the ball go in the basket. Dime Exclusive: Bo Jackson Talks Training At Nike Sneaker Revival

Bo Jackson

I just can’t do it. Bo Jackson’s “knowledge” has been marketed and mythologized for decades, and gonging that popular phrase, again, would further dilute something that deserves to remain simple and sweet.

It’s hard enough for Jackson to be Jackson. The man was so captivating in the 80s and 90s that he became a cross-training abstraction; an impossibly perfect body, bound in our minds to his shoulder pads and baseball bat, until his body broke. Now he exists for most people as a frozen, unfulfilled hypothetical from 1991. But before that infamous Bengals game when the hip…man. If you don’t know, you better ask Google. Read More »

Is Chris Paul a product of the system?

Chris Paul (photo. Zach Wolfe)

First off, let me get this out of the way: Chris Paul is no worse than the 4th-best point guard in the NBA. On some days I’d take Deron Williams over him, some days Tony Parker, some days Chauncey Billups. Other days, I’d take CP over anybody.

BUT, in the name of playing Devil’s advocate, there’s a question that’s been building up that I’ve been kicking around the Dime office to no clear answer:

Is Chris Paul more of a “product of the system” than we previously thought? Read More »

T-Mac vs. KG: Impossible Is Something

Kevin Garnett & Tracy McGrady

It was weird enough watching the Knicks/Celtics game last night and seeing Eddie House and Nate Robinson taking ill-advised shots for the opposite team. But with 2:49 left in the game, and the Celtics up 107-104, I actually cringed in my seat when Tracy McGrady had the ball on the left wing with Kevin Garnett guarding him 1-on-1. Read More »

Earlier this month, we told you about how the women in Portland love them some Rudy Fernandez. Today, those same women were delivered some sad news: Rudy Fernandez might return to Europe. The NBA’s 5 Toughest Players To Guard

Jared Dudley

Just a couple of minutes ago, Jared Dudley tweeted this: “I have had the privledge of guarding Kobe, LeBron, @dwadeofficial @carmeloanthony, and @KevinDurant35. Who do u think is the hardest to guard?”

While Dudley went on to say he’s had the toughest time guarding Durant, more than any other player in the NBA (behind Kobe) – to quote JD: “He is def a problem.” – we thought this would be a great question for DimeMag.com. Read More »
