Although it’s surprisingly not retired, Tracy McGrady will most likely wear Stephon Marbury‘s No. 3 when he suits up for the Knicks. This past summer, T-Mac changed from No. 1 to No. 3 to promote his documentary on Darfur, 3 Points, which he filmed in 2007. Hopefully for him, he his No. 3 jersey will actually see some action. Earlier this season, Dime had a photo shoot set up with an NBA player who is notorious within the industry for being difficult with the media. This time, however, the player and his handlers were uncharacteristically cooperative and excited to do this shoot and be on their best professional behavior. Why? Because as his manager told us, Player X believed he had one more big contract left in him, so he wanted to do everything to get more exposure and project a positive image.
I wish I could tell you that Player X’s mindset is a rarity, but that’s how many pro athletes think. The desire to be put in position to win games and simply play at a high level isn’t necessarily the point. It’s all about the next contract. Read More »

After the rumors quieted surrounding Amar’e Stoudemire, Miami has decided to check in on another Western Conference power forward. And even though this deal doesn’t appear like it’s going to happen before the deadline, the Heat and Jazz are talking about a trade that would send Carlos Boozer to Miami for the expiring contracts of Udonis Haslem and Quentin Richardson. Sources say that the Jazz and Heat might need a third team to complete a deal, and the Wizards (who are about $830,000 over the luxury tax threshold right now) could use the cap relief. Read More »

So much for the Knicks not being able to land Tracy McGrady’s expiring contract, according to ESPN.com’s Marc Stein, the Rockets, Kings and Knicks have agreed to terms that will expand the Houston-Sacramento deal into a three-way trade that lands Tracy McGrady and Sergio Rodriguez in New York, Kevin Martin, Jordan Hill, Jared Jeffries and Hilton Armstrong in Houston and Carl Landry, Joey Dorsey and Larry Hughes in Sacramento. Although this isn’t a blockbuster by any means, as I wrote earlier today, the Bucks are not done dealing. According to ESPN.com’s Chad Ford, the Bucks are in serious talks with the Sixers surrounding a deal that would send Jodie Meeks, Francisco Elson and a second-round pick to the Sixers for Primoz Brezec and Royal Ivey. My initial reaction: Who cares? Read More »

While yesterday’s Nate Robinson to Boston scenario seemed like it was going to be straight up for Eddie House and a second round pick, ESPN.com’s Chris Sheridan is reporting that the Knicks have reached a tentative agreement on a deal that would send Robinson and a second player to the Celtics for House, J.R. Giddens and Bill Walker. The identity of the second New York player was not immediately clear. Read More »
