Stephen Curry Schools the Birdman

Wow. Our friends at WeAllScheme just posted this clip from last night’s Warriors/Nuggets game of Steph Curry hitting Chris Andersen with the crossover, the one-handed- scoop- fake, and the spin back, baby hook in the lane.

this kid is great for basketball….not one of those freak athletes…..just a great kid w/ tons of skill and bball iq

  • Mark

    Exactly what hahns said.

I thought he was a punk when I first saw him, but I think he’s got his head on straight too. I’m a fan.

  • kg fan

the warriors better keep this one or the fans are going to completely bail

  • Jeff

I love how Ronny Turiaf looks like he has a migraine just from watching that play!

  • Bill

Guarantee some hater is going to comment and call it a carry.

  • thedoc

Love watching Curry play. The kid is just crafty.

  • Spliff 2 My Lou

That was a real veteran move right there. I winder where all the haters are from last summer around draft time who said he couldn’t cut it in the League?

  • hahns

id like to throw my hat in that pot- i wouldnt say i was a hater bc i really wanted to see him do well in the league- i just couldnt differentiate him from jj redick – but i definitely doubted his ability to succeed. that being said- when jj reddick was about to be drafted, i had pretty high hopes that hed be a good player in the league. but since he kinda floundered, i thought redick would too

  • thedoc

There is no comparison between jj redick and curry. Curry’s game is completely different. Curry is very good off the dribble and has all kinds of moves to shake and bake you, before he puts it in your eye. Redick is purely a jump shooter. He has no where near the versatility that Curry has off the dribble.

  • BiGShoTBoB

I agree with thedoc Curry’s game is more similar to Allen Iverson but is a way better passer.

@Bill. Not a carry, a travel. Moved his foot.

    -your neighborhood hater

  • isotope

    * moved his PIVOT foot

  • Ducky The Truth

it was a fly move but it looks like he took steps on his pivot foot. and idk if u count the slide his foot did.

  • GoEasy

LOVE the move. It was a travel, but not one that’s gonna get called. Curry is SICK.

  • http://twitter.com/TomGyorko TomGfromCanada

    the kid got skills

  • the big fundamental

I love turiaf’s facial expressions lol! the kid’s got some moves

  • danocasa

curry for ROTY anyone? after that triple double, man, kids got serious game.

  • Diego

    Yeah, dragged that left foot.

He’s kind of in the Tony Parker (but with outside shot), Iverson, Nash crafty driver mold. Gonna be fun to watch for years. If Golden State only had management. I wonder how Ellis likes being 2nd banana these days at GS? Time to trade his ass, Sacramento/Kevin Martin style. Same sort of situation–there is a new, better sheriff in town now.

  • jm

Golden St. better hold on to this kid because he is a gem. His game is much different than Redick’s. I am a big Redick fan, but he cannot create off the dribble. JJ creates off the ball with movement and getting open jumpers or off the pump fake to get in the lane. He has gotten better at putting the ball on the deck and getting by his defender, but nothing on the level of Curry. Curry is probably a few years from an all star appearance. If he was in the East I think he would be a lock in the next year or two. With all the great guards in the West he may get lost in the shuffle a bit. But love this kid’s game. I am starting to see some Steve Nash in him the more he plays. I guess because he can shoot, pass, is very crafty and doesn’t have overwhelming athleticism.

Hopefully, Seth becomes a carbon copy at Duke and gets that back to the final four.

    @Everyone
Reke got ROY in his trophy case already. What Curry’s been doing over Feb. Reke’s been doing the whole year. Numbers don’t lie.

  • jm

    @Willis

Tyreke does have ROY locked up. No question there.

  • http://twitter.com/therealknowbody Gabriel Brogden

    Very Dope!

His pivot was down when he twisted for the j.

    Didn’t look like a travel.

    He’s just a nice baller.

    Plain and simple.

  • Tim

the move is not sick if its a travel and shouldn’t count.

  • jm

How you do you figure it was a travel? Planted his pivot foot and used it on the spin back for the little tear drop j. Guess what…it did count and was sick. Stop hating on the kid.

  • Noe

I think Curry should win Rookie Of The Year. He has great court vision, he’s a GREAT passer, has a good basketball IQ, and is a team player. Yes, i know the majority thinks ROTY should go to Tyreke Evans because he has more points per game. But if you look at what type of situation they both are in, then you will too think Curry should get it too. Evans does not have to share the ball as much as Curry. Curry shares the ball with two ball hogger’s on his team(Ellis and Maggette). So of course Evans has more points per game because he is pretty much the whole offense for the Kings, so I say Curry should get Rookie Of The Year.

  • http://twitter.com/PoppiGEE POPPI GEE

Ronny Turiaf was throwing down some pretty viscious dunks early in that game.

  • RonNation

I WOULD SURE HOPE A PG COULD FAKE OUT A CENTER

    JESUS CHRIST

  • heartbreaker85

it’s not a travel. this is the nba. they allow three steps nowadays.

carry? wtf? if the refs made that call, there’d be no wade, no lebron, no a.i. even m.j. carried.

  • hooper5013

Steph in two years will be a top 3 PG in the league (Deron, CP3). I would love to see him on the 2012 olympic team. He is as crafty as they come in the NBA. I been saying he would be a stud and I predicted rookie of the year which he is slowly pulling away from Tyreke evans as we speak.

  • jm

    @Noe

Although I really love Curry and prefer him to Evans, it is pretty tough to deny Evans should get the award. Beyond that Evans is averaging over 20 a game, he is also averaging more assists and rebounds than Curry. Shoots a good percentage from the floor as well.

There is an argument for both sides of the coin because although Curry has ball-hogs on his team they are formidable weapons that other defenses have to pay attention to and thus make it a little easier for Curry to get free at times. Evans is the man on that squad and everyone they play knows it. Some would say that would be a harder situation because defenses are specifically geared to contain him. Both squads are losing most nights so can’t throw records in the mix.

I think Evans gets the nod here. Also has been super consistent this season. I do love how Curry’s game has gotten better and his numbers are on the rise as opposed to someone like Brandon Jennings who started out on fire and has fizzled back into the player he really is. Brandon is a legend in his own mind…or at least puts off that vibe. nice to see him humbled a bit after that 55 pt performance. His shooting percentages are pretty weak.

Anyway, I do see Curry as a top 3 to top 5 pg in 2 or 3 years.

  • http://dime eyes

I love what people dont see in Brandon Jennings. LOL. They’re winning has nothing to do wth him. As the Warriors & Kings losing have nothing at all to their stat stuffers. Clear cut race for R.O.Y. Not a good sign to have to trade away talent to make way. You geniuses will get it later. Sometimes its the so called star. You waste a city’s time building around natural scorers or 2 guards. That 55 pts was on who & the W. The kings one by. A buzzer beater. Lebron is great has no rings. KOBE is 2nd best & has 4 & counting. Wade thanks to T mobile has an imaginary ring. Jennings is this yrs MELO. SLEPT ON KILL3R. Rookie pg leading his team to the playoffs while struggling from the fi3ld. Ast check to’s check. W’s double check. I know its the same east King dominates so easily.

Bj is confident & will bust Curry @$%. Davidson/Arizona. All American. Lottery wth.6 mins of play. Skills.17 & 6 on a bad day id still take. Curry is a great shooter/scorer. Time will tell. Don’t say I told u so. Yes he’s better than John Wall. He might not be better than Ridnour or Skiles though. Somebody please beat Brandon’s high of 55 that shouldn’t count. He didn’t score in the 1st qtr.

Lbj rookie yr no playoffs. Melo playoffs higher scoring avg in the west. King was ROY. Hmmmmm

  • rick773

The move was sick extremely sick but I think top 5 PG in the next 2 years is reaching…..Deron CP3 Rose Reke Rondo maybe John wall…..I think top 10 is a little more realistic. Make no mistake about it though the Kid is nice and I love his game

  • Raj S

Speaking of Rondo, he did that exact move against the Birdman a few nights ago when the Celtics lost to the Nuggets. As a matter of fact, Rondo does that move a LOT.

  • JM

    @eyes

You are making a huge deal about his 55 point performance. We can never take that away as it was an unbelievable game performance. A performance very similar to let’s say – Toney Delk and Tracey Murray. Both scored over 50 in a single game. That means nada in the grand scheme of things other than saying “what a great performance”.

You picked a bad time to say Jennings is the s**t. He has struggled with single point performances in the last 3 of 4 games. The Bucks are playoff bound because they are in the East. They are a 7 seed in a weak conference.

Do you think if you substitute Curry or Evans for Jennings the Bucks would be out of the playoff picture? or if Jennings was on those teams out West they would be better off? I don’t even think you believe that.

I am not saying Jennings is a bad NBA player. I think he will be a top 10 pg in the league. I just think he is overrated because he has flashes of brilliance. His 55 game performance just made the inflation in his value much worse. He has been in a slump since December. Both Curry and Evans are playing some of their best ball now. Jennings is playing his worst ball of the season when it counts most and they are in a playoff push.

Again, he is a good NBA pg. But, I definitely don’t believe he is better than the other two and not better John Wall.

But Jennings will always be a lightning rod for criticism and have that love/hate relationship with fans because of his mouth. He talks so much ish outside the game on various social networks that you either love or hate him. It is always the same talk too…he is the best pg to ever dribble a ball and he would bust this person and that person, but is a victim and blah blah blah.

He has the stage – and his numbers overall are good, but on the decline when they matter most on a playoff team and that is a fact. He will have great performances because he has that streaky ability, but I want to see what he does on a more consistent basis to warrant the notion that he is a top pg. If I had to redraft pg’s in this past class…he would still be #3 art best.

  • UncheckedAggression

Thanks JM for writing the necessary response to the nonsense rambling by “eyes”. Sometimes I feel like I should but it isn’t worth the time. I mean, bringing up the Melo/Lebron ROY “race” is appropriate, but not in the sense that some people believe. The ONLY thing Melo had over Lebron was a better team. That’s it. In fact, Melo has always had a better supporting cast (up until Jameson joined the Cavs). And now we have Curry/Evans vs Jennings. Very similar situation and hopefully the deserving rookie will win the award. Right now, that rookie is Evans. Curry is catching up and Jennings is not even in the picture right now.

Aside from all this… God damn that play was nice and smooth. Not many players in the NBA could have pulled it off quite like that.

  • machineflesh

clear travel at about the 0:25 mark. and i’m a lover not a hater.

  • say what

    DREAM SHAKE
    hakeem quality

  • Dave

I used to do that move on the playground all the time. Great way to get big men off their feet and to clear space to the hoop.

Steph Curry has exceeded all expectations. Hope he continues to improve. He’ll be the perennial 3-pt champion at the AS game, to be sure.

Has there been a better father-son combo in the league, apart from Jellybean-Kobe?

  • SaggyWheels

PTI was swooning over this shot and i didn’t get it. Rondo makes this move three times a month.

  • Sacto_J

2 cents for the ROY debate –
Evans is an above average NBA defender RIGHT NOW, while Curry and Jennings have much development to go through before they can even be considered average. Evans has the clear edge…
    Peace
