Ben Gordon can’t explain his rough season in Detroit

Ben Gordon

For the most part, opinions were split when Ben Gordon signed a five-year contract with the Detroit Pistons last summer reported to be worth $55 million.

On one hand, the 26-year-old BG was just coming off the best season of his pro career, which he capped by averaging 24.3 points and hitting a slew of clutch shots in a close playoff series loss to the defending champion Celtics. On the other hand, was it smart for the rebuilding Pistons to give All-Star type money to an undersized two-guard (with zero All-Star nods) who is widely regarded as a one-dimensional scorer? Buy Low, Sell High: Fantasy Week 20

Chris Bosh

Buy Low: Chris Bosh is back, but his return has been pretty tame so far. In his three games back, Bosh has averaged 16 points, 8 rebounds and 2.7 assists, which, while not too shabby, is well below his studly averages this season. He should be rounding back into form before soon and owners who can get him cheaply should do so without hesitation. Read More »

Austin Rivers H.S. Hoop Diary: Championship Week & Big Decisions

H.S. Hoop Diary: Austin Rivers cuts Florida, keeps Duke, Kansas, UNC

Winter Park (Fla.) High School point guard Austin Rivers is one of the best prep players, pound-for-pound, in the country. HighSchoolHoop.com ranks the 6-4 junior fifth overall in its national top 50. Rivers has been verbally committed to Florida for over a year, but this fall, decided to open things up and let Duke recruit him as well.

The younger son of Celtics coach Doc Rivers and younger brother of Indiana Hoosiers PG Jeremiah Rivers, Austin has agreed to give HSH and Dime exclusive access by chronicling his thoughts in a regular diary where he’ll update readers on everything from his personal life to his high school season to his thoughts on Duke and Florida. Here are some excerpts from his newest entry: Read More »

Great News For Mavs Fans: Jason Terry Returns To Practice

Jason Terry

Sure the Dallas Mavericks have won 13 games in a row – and might not lose in their next five games either – but they have to be more than excited to get their star sixth man back on the court. Just one week after undergoing facial surgery to repair his fractured left orbital bone, Jason Terry practiced today. And better yet, Terry says he expects to play in one of the Mavs’ two games next week. Read More »

Who’s More Clutch: Paul Pierce or Ray Allen?

Ray Allen, Dime #11

As much as the Celtics are supposed to be struggling, and as much as I root for the Pacers, I’m just not seeing an upset special when Boston hosts Indiana tonight. The C’s have had a day to rest, an extra day to think about how they got booed by their own fans in a blowout loss to Memphis on Wednesday. Indiana is coming off a win over the Sixers, and they’re getting Danny Granger back from a one-game suspension, but still, my gut says a motivated Boston squad will make an example of the Pacers before Sunday’s potentially season-defining test at Cleveland. Evan Turner’s halfcourt game-winner

If you’re not lucky enough to watch TV while you’re working today, you probably missed this. In the Big Ten tournament, Ohio State was down by two with 2.2 seconds left. And then NCAA Player of the Year candidate Evan Turner added to his P.O.Y. campaign…

Help Give Gilbert Arenas A New Nickname

Gilbert Arenas, Dime #29

Note: Comment now, because we are going to name a winner Monday morning…

After word broke that Gilbert Arenas was switching his uniform number from No. 0 to No. 6, this got us thinking: What should his new nickname be? Arenas has worn zero since his days at Arizona, always saying that he picked that number because that’s how many minutes people expected him in college. But with a new outlook hopefully going into next season, we thought we’d help our boy Gil out. Read More »

Duke’s “Big Three” Bringing Back the Cool Factor

Duke's Jon Scheyer

One by one, Kyle Singler, Jon Scheyer and Nolan Smith walk into the small media room inside Cameron Indoor Stadium and take a seat behind a wooden table with one mic amidst a sea of digital recorders. Over and over, they answer geeky notebook-jotting reporters who try and find smarter ways to recycle the same question.

It’s boring and typical, and Duke’s “Big Three” — arguably the storied program’s most talented and productive trio since Christian Laettner, Bobby Hurley and Grant Hill — all know it. Still, consummate professionals, they embrace the redundancy. Even have a little fun with it. Read More »

Daily Fantasy Diagnosis: 3.12

Brandon Roy (photo. Aaron Hewitt)

Beast of the Night: Brandon Roy torched the Warriors with 41 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and 1 block. He shot 64 percent (14-22) from the field, 77 percent (13-17) from the line and had 4 turnovers. The good news is that Roy plays the boys from Oakland once more in the Blazers’ last game of the season. The bad news is that Roy’s squad has the worst fantasy playoff schedule in the NBA.
