Too old. Too slow. By now it sounds like a recording for the Boston Celtics, but there’s a new problem beginning to surface that may be the real reason why this team is looking like a fake contender. Forget age and speed — these Celtics aren’t as hungry as they were in ’08 and ’09. During last night’s 20-piecing at home at the hands of the Grizzlies, the Celtics looked a lot like the UConn men’s team when they went through the motions before quitting in the Big East Tournament; maybe it’s something in the New England water … Rudy Gay (28 pts, 8 rebs) is exactly the kind of motivated thoroughbred giving Boston problems. Minutes before the Nuggets and Timberwolves tipped off this evening, one of Minnesota’s announcers called Chauncey Billups “one of the best (point guards) that’s ever played the game.”
I’ll have to qualify that by noting this is the same announce crew that was getting all over Jonny Flynn the other night for allegedly not passing the ball enough — even though Flynn leads the team with 4.4 assists per game while nobody else has more than 3.2 a night. So maybe we should take their PG evaluation skills with a grain of salt. But it’s a valid discussion piece:
Where does Chauncey Billups rank among the game’s all-time great point guards? Read More »

We spend a ton of time on Twitter every day. We have to, it’s the fastest way to get breaking NBA news and information and to connect with our readers, basketball fans and other basketball outlets.
Along the way though, we find ourselves laughing every single day at the tweets from NBA players, bloggers and fans. We decided that every afternoon we’re going to put the best tweets (both funny and informative) we see that day in one place for our dimemag.com readers who either aren’t on Twitter or don’t have the time to sit and follow tons of feeds all day long like we do.

Ranking the NBA from worst to first…
30. New Jersey Nets (7-56) — Garbage in, garbage out, garbage up, garbage down.
29. Minnesota Timberwolves (14-50) — In Monday’s loss to Dallas, Kurt Rambis sat Kevin Love most of the night and played Darko in his place, claiming he wanted to have a more active big man to give Dirk some problems. You’re over-thinking it, homeboy. Play the double-double kid. Read More »

Whenever you talk about guys that could have been great in the NBA, Drazen Petrovic is name that is mentioned. But most people never had the chance to see him play. As you can imagine, the arguments we have in the Dime office are often and varied. From what NBA players you could score on in a game to 100, to who has more lifetime notches on his belt than Charlie Sheen, anything is fair game. But with college basketball taking over our lives, there was one debate that got especially heated yesterday surround the following question: Could the UConn women’s basketball team beat a Division 1 men’s squad? Beast of the Night: Andrew Bogut busted up the Celtics with 25 points, 17 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal and 4 blocks. The Aussie shot 56 percent (10-18) from the field, 100 percent (5-5) from the line, had 2 turnovers and dunkfaced Glen Davis in the process. He’s been healthy this season and has been a top-10 fantasy force during the past month. Read More »
