Hawks/Heat was only notable last season for being the worst playoff series of ’09: A brutal seven-game stretch of blowouts, dead crowds, a subpar Joe Johnson, an exhausted D-Wade, and some good ol’ Pat Riley-approved ’90s Knicks prison yard basketball sprinkled in here and there. This season it’s been more of the same, as the three Hawks/Heat meetings leading up to last night had been decided by an average of 16 points. And yet Saturday’s matchup turned out to be the best game on the NBA schedule … It was nip/tuck throughout the fourth quarter. Read More »
For some inexplicable reason, while the ESPN announcers were recapping last night’s Cavs/Pistons game as Cleveland was putting the finishing touches on another W, they failed to explore the possibility that Detroit was shaken up by what had happened to Rodney Stuckey, or go into how it affected their play … During a timeout late in the third quarter, Stuckey was coming of the court and said he felt dizzy. He then collapsed on the bench right next to the Pistons’ trainer, and had to be rushed away in ambulance. After that, there was a somber, strange vibe in the arena that even translated through the TV. Read More »
Buy Low:
Tony Parker has been pretty dismal this season, thanks to various injuries. However, he’s proven to be immune to coach Gregg Popovich’s fondness for holding his stars out of the second of back-to-back games during the final weeks of the season. If Parker can keep away from sharp objects in his home and amass some consistent playing time, he should be a great buy-low target for owners who are lucky enough to be in leagues with a late trade deadline or none at all, especially since the Spurs have a great fantasy playoff schedule. We spend a ton of time on Twitter every day. We have to, it’s the fastest way to get breaking NBA news and information and to connect with our readers, basketball fans and other basketball outlets.
Along the way though, we find ourselves laughing every single day at the tweets from NBA players, bloggers and fans. We decided that every afternoon we’re going to put the best tweets (both funny and informative) we see that day in one place for our dimemag.com readers who either aren’t on Twitter or don’t have the time to sit and follow tons of feeds all day long like we do.
Three months ago, when I saw Greg Oden rolling around the Rose Garden floor looking like somebody had kicked a hole in his knee, I assumed like everybody else that he was at least done for this season — and quite possibly done for his career.
But with his Portland Trail Blazers surprisingly still in the Western Conference playoff picture despite significant injuries to Oden and more than half of the rest of the roster (including All-Star Brandon Roy), now Oden is hinting he might be able to come back as the Blazers make their postseason push. It’s Friday and it seems like a pretty slow news day. I’m sure you guys are sick of writers overreaching to find meaning in LeBron’s change from 23 to 6 and anything having to do with Amar’e Stoudemire’s contract, so why not buy something nice to keep yourselves occupied with? Here are five NBA items selling at ridiculously exorbitant prices on eBay right now that you may or may not have any use for. At all. Read More »
This past summer, we had Pitt’s Ashton Gibbs as one of Team USA’s 5 Breakout Stars after their U19 Gold Medal victory in the FIBA World Championships. While he only played 10.8 minutes a game during his freshman year, the strong guard with a nice jumper has been given plenty of playing time (35.3 mpg) this season, and he’s produced. Leading the team with 16.3 points per game, it was just another day in the office last night. Read More »
Kobe Bryant is a loyal dude. Not only does he hook up his teammates and sponsored schools, but he also takes care of his alma mater. During his last trip to Lower Merion High School in Ardmore, Pa., Kobe unveiled their special pair of the Nike Zoom Kobe V. This weekend, you can cop ‘em too. Read More »
As I’m writing this, ESPN Classic is airing the 1995 Duke/North Carolina game in preparation for the big rivalry matchup this weekend. I’m pretty sure this ’95 game is the one Jeff Capel sent into overtime with a half-court buzzer-beater, but my top memory is the dunk by Jerry Stackhouse posted in the video below. What’s your favorite Duke/UNC memory?
