In the waning days of the ’94-95 regular season, Rice and the Lottery-bound Heat hosted Shaq, Penny and the eventual Eastern Conference champs from Orlando. Vowing not to get embarrassed on national TV, G-Money torched the Magic for 56 points (20-27 FG, 7-8 3PA), still a franchise record. Shaq put up 38 points and 16 boards of his own, and Penny dropped 28 and 18 dimes, but this was Rice’s show…
In case you didn’t already know, the McDonald’s All American Game is taking place this week. So that means the POWERADE Jam Fest is going on tonight. We just got the list of participants, and let me say, you couldn’t ask for a better group of dunkers. Josh Selby, C.J. Leslie, Joe Jackson, Ray McCallum, Jereme Richmond, Tristan Thompson, Patric Young and Perry Jones fill out the list of contenders. In case you’re unfamiliar with their body of work, check out some highlights after the jump. Read More »
Lovable and made of foam, the MVPuppets have taken over. Paying homage to the classic Nike poster (after the jump) of a lifelike statue in the middle of Central Park featuring LeBron James, Drew Gooden, Tyson Chandler, Dajuan Wagner, Caron Butler, Tayshaun Prince, Richard Jefferson and Amar’e Stoudemire, the whole MVPuppet crew is featured on this tee. So while we figure out who won the Kobe Bryant “California’s Finest” t-shirts that hit the office last week, here’s a chance to win one more. Read More »
In my opinion, there’s no fan-base more rabid than the Toronto Raptors. And understandably so. As the lone representative of NBA teams above the border, it’s hard to shed the title of “expansion team” and become a legit title contender in the NBA. Forget about competing with the traditions of Boston, Los Angeles and even Chicago, the Raptors have only been around since 1995. So when the mainstream media continually come out and attack their franchise player, Chris Bosh, I understand how the initial reaction from Raptors Nation is to get defensive. It’d be like me going up to you and your wife and telling your that she’d have such a better life with me. You wouldn’t be too pleased. Read More »
About a month ago, I wrote an article about why all the max contract players in the NBA were going to become free agents this summer. While at the time I had Yao Ming in the “non-max” category along with guys like Paul Pierce, Dirk Nowitzki and Michael Redd, I wrote that it was their decision whether or not they were going to opt out or extend. Word out of Houston is that Yao is going through this dilemma right now. While many believed that his foot injury and extensive surgery would prevent him from opting out after this season, it appears he simply hasn’t made up his mind. Read More »
College basketball’s Decepticons are back. Duke is in the Final Four for the 11th time during Coach K‘s reign (and the first time since ’04), so if you’d been missing Krzyzewski’s scowl, the army of three-point bombers, the goofy big guys, the smug grins, the confident swagger, and Dick Vitale re-enacting an Extenze commercial with every TV cameo (“I’m bigger!”) you’re glad to see the program the rest of us love to hate back on the biggest stage … The Blue Devils trailed Baylor at halftime, as their turnovers led to transition buckets, and it looked like LaceDarius Dunn outside (22 pts) and Ekpe Udoh inside (18 pts, 10 rebs, 5 blks) might be able to carry the Bears to the win. For two teams that were ranked in a lot of people’s national Top 10 in the preseason, it still seems like an underdog story for West Virginia and Butler to have made it to the Final Four. It shouldn’t be that much of a surprise, though, as the Mountaineers and Bulldogs have most of the elements required to succeed in March: Defense, experience, strong guard play, versatility, good coaching, and a couple of legit stars. And perhaps more importantly, both teams got hot at the right time. West Virginia’s win over Kentucky yesterday was their 10th in a row, while Butler’s win over Kansas State was their 24th in a row … Read More »
If Tom Izzo really does have an underground Lord of the Rings-style factory where he builds his Michigan State army from scratch, he wasn’t even being creative when he made Korie Lucious as the eventual successor to Kalin Lucas. Similar name, similar game, and if you saw the spin move and floater that Lucious (10 pts, 6 asts, 4 stls) hit last night to stick the dagger in Northern Iowa and send the Spartans to yet another Elite Eight, you couldn’t help but remember Lucas’ similar shot that iced Kansas in the tourney last year … Read More »
