We spend a ton of time on Twitter every day. We have to, it’s the fastest way to get breaking NBA news and information and to connect with our readers, basketball fans and other basketball outlets.
Along the way though, we find ourselves laughing every single day at the tweets from NBA players, bloggers and fans. We decided that every afternoon we’re going to put the best tweets (both funny and informative) we see that day in one place for our dimemag.com readers who either aren’t on Twitter or don’t have the time to sit and follow tons of feeds all day long like we do.
There is a wildly talented young power forward who may not play tonight against my Indiana Pacers. His name is Andray Blatche, and whether you’d describe him as “mercurial” or “moronic,” fact is he is the main thing getting in his own way to becoming an NBA All-Star.
If I could recommend a mentor for Blatche, I might suggest Chris Webber. One of the most talented PF’s of all-time, C-Webb in his day also had to learn to mature before he could flourish. Back in ’01, he did did this to the Pacers: 51 points, 26 boards in one game.
Parity is real in college basketball. For the Dime editorial team, that was never more clear than a couple days ago when somebody pitched the idea that we make up lists of our Top-10 favorite players from each the Sweet Sixteen programs, and we quickly realized there aren’t that many tradition-rich options on the board. Ranking your 10 favorite Baylor basketball players would be like making an all-time Charlotte Bobcats team. Read More »
Not to get too out of control, but last night’s Nuggets/Knicks shootout between Carmelo Anthony and Danilo Gallinari had shades (just shades) of Dominique Wilkins versus Larry Bird. While ‘Melo was getting buckets inside, mid-range and outside on his way to 36 points — the “full-service buffet of offense” as described in Smack — Gallinari was knocking down long-range jumpers left, right and center; he jacked up 13 threes on his way to scoring 28 and getting the win. If you had a chance to watch any of the South Florida Bulls this season, you know that Dominique Jones will shoot your face off. The 6-4 guard finished this season as the Big East’s leading scorer, pouring in 21.4 points per game (including a monster 46-point slaughter at Providence in January), and now it looks like he will be getting buckets in the League next season as he submitted the necessary paperwork for this summer’s NBA Draft.
If you haven’t seen Jones play, picture Read More »
John Calipari would appear to have everything you would ever want for your favorite college team’s head coach – his players are always prepared for their opponents, he’s a great in-game coach, and he is clearly a gifted recruiter. That last part is even more apparent now that he has the backing of the vast Kentucky Wildcat Nation, arguably the deepest, most rabid, most powerful fan base in all of college basketball. Add in the fact that Cal can walk into any recruit’s living room and break out a list of all the players he’s sent to the NBA – specifically guards (most recently Derrick Rose and Tyreke Evans, and soon-to-be-top-pick John Wall) – and he’s going to land pretty much any player he wants.
Now, just to make the recruiting landscape even more lopsided, Calipari also dominates the realm of social networking, specificallyTwitter and Facebook. It’s a fact that puts Calipari and his Kentucky program light years ahead of the competition and sets the stage for him to dominate even more thoroughly for years to come. Read More »
Good to know that a Nuggets/Knicks game at MSG can be entertaining and even playground-style competitive without innocent rich people getting trampled in the front row and Carmelo Anthony having to do a Floyd Mayweather Jr. impersonation … Instead of fighting, ‘Melo just got into a little harmless smack-talk with Danilo Gallinari. Not sure if you’ve noticed, but much like Andrea Bargnani, Gallo kind of snuck up on the League (as much as a guy playing in New York can do it low-key) as a legit problem for defenses. Read More »
If they aren’t already, somebody needs to make a movie or write a book about the New Jersey Nets this season. Even if the Nets don’t become the new standard-bearer as the worst NBA team of all-time in the win-loss column, they’ve provided their share of train-wreck-style entertainment. Read More »
