Trevor Cooney knows the Andy Rautins comparisons are inevitable. They’re about the same size, have in the gym range and are highly valued by Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim. But the Wilmington, Del., native isn’t settling for a pre-determined fate. While he admits the Rautins comparisons are flattering, the high school junior has his own goals. We caught up with him this weekend at the Boo Williams Invitational following a tough loss to E1T1 Elite (featuring Austin Rivers) to discuss his AAU team, his Syracuse future and some of his other interests. Beast of the Night:Trevor Ariza finished with 29 points, 5 threes, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, 2 blocks and 2 turnovers in one of his best performances of the season. He shot 56 percent (10-18) from the field and 100 percent (4-4) from the charity stripe. Though his numbers this year were disappointing to most, his difficulties should’ve been expected. Still, Ariza’s value will be intriguing in next year’s drafts. Read More »
Ever since his Michigan State days, Jason Richardson has been a Nike guy. But now more than ever, players are leaving the big American brands and heading overseas. Joining a PEAK roster than already includes Jason Kidd, Ron Artest and Shane Battier, check out J-Rich’s new kicks that that he posted on his Twitter feed yesterday. Read More »
It may seem a little odd that the Boston Celtics are adding a player with just two games left in the regular season, but sometimes it’s little moves like this that pay huge dividends later on. After placing Marcus Landry on waivers last Friday afternoon, Boston wanted to add some size to the roster before the playoffs. And they did just that by signing former UMass forward Tony Gaffney today. For a team looking to meet back up with the Lakers in the NBA Finals, who better to add than a guy that played with Los Angeles for Summer League and training camp this year, making it all the way to the final cut down. Around the time Tyreke Evans was closing in on the buckets that would put him in the 20-5-5 rookie pantheon with Oscar, Mike and LeBron, and the Sacramento crowd was so cowbell-era loud that I almost mistook Ime Udoka for Doug Christie, I texted some colleagues: “Are you watching Kings/Rockets?”
No answer. Of course. Why would they be watching? These were two certified Lottery teams at work, a game that meant nothing for the NBA postseason picture. Read More »
This is one of the craziest things I’ve seen in a long time. After Kenyon Martin blocked Hamed Haddadi into the stands, when he went to go retrieve the ball, Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins decided he was going to swat K-Mart. Hilarious.
With the season almost over, NBA GMs have their minds set on the NBA Playoffs. But for those teams that will be counting ping pong balls instead of playoff victories, the upcoming NBA Draft has many intriguing prospects that need to be recognized. So with March Madness over, Dime contributor Lucas Shapiro continues profiling players and giving them a team that would best fit their talent. Last week was Kansas’ Xavier Henry, so now we’re on to Butler’s Gordon Hayward. Read More »
Pretend for a second that the Raptors make the playoffs and have a chance of beating the Cavaliers in the first round. If Chris Bosh‘s face heals up and the rest of the frontcourt can bottle whatever they had during last night’s must-win at Detroit, this team actually matches up pretty well with Cleveland in the same way Orlando’s front line gave LeBron‘s squad problems last year … Andrea Bargnani (33 pts, 5 threes) was a sniper against the Pistons akin to Rashard Lewis on a good day; Hedo could recapture his actual game from the Orlando days; Sonny Weems could be utilized on the wing like Pietrus to harass LeBron; Read More »
The Portland Trail Blazers are in serious trouble. It turns out that the knee injury that Brandon Roy sustained on Sunday against the Lakers is fairly serious. Roy reportedly has a torn meniscus in his right knee and is listed as “day-to-day” for the playoffs.
At some point, the meniscus damage is going to require surgery – and the four to six weeks of rehab/recovery time that comes with it – but Roy elected to put off the operation so that he might contribute in the playoffs (he apparently can’t damage the knee any further by playing on it). So what does this diagnosis mean for the Blazers? Read More »
