The NBA is off until Thursday, when Round 12 of Lakers vs. Celtics (Championship Edition) tips off. It’s kind of strange that as much as we’ve been trained to view this as the League’s greatest rivalry, it’s actually overwhelmingly one-sided. In the 11 times the Lake Show and Celts have met in the NBA Finals before, Boston has a 9-2 lead. So basically it’s a “rivalry” in the same way Notre Dame vs. Navy or Scott Steiner vs. Urine Test (he beats it every time) is a “rivalry” … That said, the voting has been pretty close in our DimeMag.com poll asking who will win this year’s matchup. All the back-and-forth strategy, zone defenses, and random heroic role players didn’t seem to matter when it was all said and done. When the Lakers officially sent the Suns packing after yesterday’s Western Conference Finals Game 6 clincher, it really just boiled down to the fact that L.A. had Kobe Bryant and Phoenix didn’t … Kobe dropped 37 points (12-25 FG, 10-11 FT) in the road win, vanquishing one of his last remaining postseason haunts before moving on to tackle another in the Boston Celtics. Between Ron Artest in L.A. and Nate Robinson in Boston, apparently there’s something to be said for having a slightly off-kilter firecracker on your roster if you’re trying to win an NBA championship. Just ask the guys who won rings with Dennis Rodman and Stephen Jackson … Checking into last night’s Celtics/Magic Game 6 after Rajon Rondo crashed to the floor and hurt his back late in the first quarter, Nate turned a game that was still competitive into a blowout. And you thought the Chicago Bears “Super Bowl Shuffle” was bad? Back during their Montana/Rice/Lott dynasty era, the San Francisco 49ers cut this video, “Team of the 80′s.” Why don’t current sports teams do more stuff like this? Because nobody would be able to avoid inappropriate lyrics and it would become a big mess, I’m guessing…
Aside from keeping Baron Davis looking fresh, Li-Ning is also the official outfitter of the Argentinian National Team. And with the World Championships this Summer, you know they’re going to go all out. Watch out for the entire team rocking Li-Ning gear except for Luis Scola and Manu Ginobili, as they will most likely wear sneakers provided by their respective backers, Anta and Nike.
Tweet battles continue. This time we take a look at two rookie point guards as Brandon Jennings takes on Jonny Flynn. Who would you guys rather follow, Mr. 55 points or Mr. 6 OTs? Read More »
With Dwyane Wade saying in his Dime cover story (and again recently) that the marquee free agents would get together and talk about free agency, we decided to make a mock conversation between him, LeBron, Chris Bosh and Joe Johnson. Here it goes: Read More »
Yes, I know it is the Eastern Conference Finals. Yes, I know the Celtics have a chance to punch their ticket to the NBA Finals in front of their fans. Saying that, Glen Davis should not play in Game 6. In high school, I suffered a concussion playing pick-up basketball. After getting hit I finished the game, but battled fatigue and lack of concentration throughout. I stopped playing basketball for a few weeks after the concussion, and seeing Davis attempt to pick himself up last night was downright scary. Read More »
Each year, the NBA Draft Combine in Chicago showcases top NBA prospects being put through various drills to test their individual athletic ability. Now these numbers don’t always translate into NBA success, but they give us a good indication. As ESPN’s Chad Ford put it, “Every year the quote “best athlete in the draft” does NOT turn into the best player in the draft. Teams do take these reports seriously. This is the first objective testing that we have on these guys and sometimes our eyes do deceive us.” With that being said, let’s take a look at which three prospects helped their Draft stock, and which three prospects hurt it. I think most fans will agree with me when I say basketball documentaries > basketball movies. Sports are obviously much easier to showcase authentically in this format. And yes, I did include three of ESPN’s 30 for 30 episodes. I didn’t really want to, but when breaking it all down, all three deserved a spot on this list. All 10 of these are special films, but none are touching the one in the top spot. Read More »
