If you are one of the nearly 2.5 million people that “Like” the NBA on Facebook, then you have probably seen a version of NBAStore.com living on the Facebook site. I can only imagine how well this has done so far. On Facebook, the NBA encourages daily fan participation by creating polls on Fan Appz and posting pictures and videos nearly every day. There are usually over 1,000 comments per post and this is why the NBA is the most “Liked” sports league that uses social media.
For the Finals, though, the NBA has taken it one step further. Read More »
When Elliot Williams first arrived on the Duke University campus back in 2008, the dreams of potential glory that surround any five-star hoops recruit were magnified for the Cameron Crazies. Coach Mike Krzyzewski’s Blue Devils hadn’t advanced past the Sweet Sixteen in four years, and the elusive National Championship trophy hadn’t found its way to Durham since 2001. Williams was going to help change all that; fresh off a disappointing second-round exit in the tourney, the Duke Blue Devils had potentially found their missing spark in the 6-4 shooting guard out of Tennessee. Two years later, Duke has its National Championship, but all Williams has are hopes for an NBA career. Read More »
Watching last night’s game, it was hard not to notice the Saturday Night Live Hall of Famers sitting next to the Lakers’ bench. But when Chris Rock tried to joke with Kobe from his seat, the Black Mamba gave him the iceberg shoulder in return. What’s a better courtside altercation: Chris Rock & Kobe or Benny the Bull & Jay-Z?

If you can’t teach height, then you can’t coach height, and so in that case you can see why the Celtics are in trouble. Remember how every Lakers fan claimed the ’08 Finals would have gone their way had Andrew Bynum been healthy, and every Boston fan responded by asking how their ass tastes? Last night we all saw what happens when L.A.’s big men are healthy and playing like they have some hair on their chests, before Kobe came in and delivered the fatal shots … Right off the bat L.A. looked to go inside, while Kobe looked to drive and put pressure on Boston’s defense. Why the Lakers won: They got to the rim. The one subplot of this series nobody really talked about beforehand is that Boston doesn’t have James Posey anymore. (In fact, the most Posey-ish player in the 2010 Finals is Ron Artest.) Back in ’08, Posey was instrumental in the effort to muscle Kobe and make him strictly a jump shooter. Tonight, Kobe was driving and getting layups, while Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum lived on offensive rebounds and easy dunks. Read More »
Norm Nixon isn’t walking through this door. Elgin Baylor isn’t walking through this door. Silk Wilkes isn’t walking through this door.
I was born in 1982, and I didn’t begin to understand NBA basketball until sometime around 1988. So before I roll out a list of my all-time favorite Los Angeles Lakers, I should point out that I missed a lot of the “Showtime” era (though ESPN Classic has helped rectify that), and I never watched Jerry West and Wilt Chamberlain when they wore purple and gold.
