We’re about a month away from the World Basketball Festival in NYC, but in the meantime there’s no basketball to be seen unless you hit up the playground scene. Here’s the best dunks of the just-finished NBA Vegas Summer League, according to NBA.com. John Wall, DeMar DeRozan, JaVale McGee and Gerald Green have cameos.
If you’re playing on the D-League Select squad in the Vegas Summer League, you can approach it one of two ways: (1) Disappointed that no NBA team felt compelled to give you a roster spot, or (2) Opportunistic, since you have a chance to shine without worrying about deferring to an NBA team’s Lottery pick. Former Temple swingman Mark Tyndale did the latter. He averaged 14.4 points in five VSL games, including dropping 21 on Atlanta and 19 on the Clippers. In last night’s VSL finale against L.A., Tyndale sent everybody home with a highlight.
Yeah, we’re talking about That Dude in Miami, but no, it’s not Rick Ross. For a brief moment on Sunday, Dwyane Wade took LeBron‘s spot as the NBA’s biggest lightning rod for criticism before avoiding the full brunt of an big controversy … Wade was initially quoted in an interview saying, “If we lose a couple in a row this season, it will be like the World Trade is coming down again.” Not long after that hit the airwaves, though, the news source in question retracted and admitted Wade was misquoted. Should LeBron play point guard for the Heat? Can LeBron play the point? The answer to the second question could make the first question moot, but with the pool of potential starting PG’s in free agency pretty much dry, Erik Spoelstra has to make sure LeBron isn’t a better option over Mario Chalmers and Carlos Arroyo (who is talking to Miami about re-signing). LeBron came into the NBA hyped as another Magic, but after seven years as his team’s primary scorer and probably losing some of that automatic trust he had in his teammates from high school, can he move to point guard right now? Last night I got and e-mail from my buddy and all it said was this: “WATCH SPORTSCENTER 2NITE MCGEE DUNK WILL BE NUM 1.” I watched SportsCenter, and for whatever the reason, this dunk wasn’t on there. But after you watch it, I’m pretty sure you’ll think that it should’ve been. This just might be JaVale McGee‘s breakout year.
Surely you can understand why the Miami Heat have dominated so much of the NBA news coverage these days. More than just the LeBron hoopla, Miami is a big story because, well, we’ve never seen anything like this: A franchise trying to build a dynasty from scratch in one summer. Once he had D-Wade, LeBron and Bosh locked in (Chris Bosh might as well change his name to “And Bosh” from now on, ’cause only the first two guys will be switching spots on the marquee), Pat Riley had to set about building an entire rest of the team; it wasn’t like the ’07-08 Celtics where they had pieces in place before adding Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett.
