Q&A: Coach K on Kevin Durant and Team USA’s toughest competition

The last two years have brought nothing but success for Mike Krzyzewski, better known as “Coach K.” In 2008, he guided the United States men’s national team to an Olympic gold medal in Beijing, and in 2010 — on his regular day job — he led Duke University to another NCAA championship. In between, Coach K landed some of the top high school recruiting classes in the country, and is committed to coaching Team USA through the 2012 Olympics at least, ensuring the winning won’t stop anytime soon. Michael Jordan Grabs Breakfast With ‘Melo, CP & D-Wade At Rucker

Jordan Breakfast Club

This morning, 23 kids got the opportunity of a lifetime. As their summer-long program of the Jordan Breakfast Club came to and end, they had a special guest speaker at their graduation. But before they could finish for the summer, they had to get past three guys: Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul and Dwyane Wade. Hopping on the court and competing against the kids, Jordan Brand‘s frontmen had a blast. Then, just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, the G.O.A.T. strutted out onto the court in All Carolina Blue Everything. Check out the photos after the jump. Read More »

The NBA’s Top 10 Goons

Matt Barnes

Any time an NBA player goes slumming and plays with the “regular” folks on the playground — preferably in a legit summer pro-am in a legit basketball city — he’s going to gain some measure of street cred.

It happened for Gilbert Arenas and Kevin Durant when they took their million-dollar knees to Barry Farms in D.C. It happened for Kobe, Baron Davis, Nate Robinson and a host of others when they played at Rucker Park in Harlem. It happened for Paul Pierce when he ran at L.A.’s Drew League.

But then Matt Barnes had to take it a step too far. Read More »

Who Wins: 1996 Dream Team vs. 1996 NBA Draft Class

1996 Dream Team

With the World Basketball Festival commencing last night, and the World Basketball Championships just around the corner, I’ve been looking at this year’s USA roster and comparing it to years past. While the original Dream Team takes the cake as the best USA team ever, the 1996 team wasn’t bad either. While looking at the ‘96 Olympic team, I thought it would be interesting to match them up to the 1996 NBA Draft Class, widely considered one of the best ever. I put a roster together from that Draft to compete against the Olympic team, and then picked a winner. Here we go: Read More »

Andre Iguodala, Jay-Z takeover USA Basketball Showcase

Andre Iguodala (USA Basketball, Nike)

Even though it wasn’t much like a real game — being played in 12-minute halves with a sudden-death overtime — last night’s USA Basketball Showcase at the World Basketball Festival was more than worth the wait. The atmosphere was definitely closer to an All-Star Game than the first scrimmage we saw on ESPN a couple weeks back. Playing on a totally unique stage (Radio City Music Hall) in a totally unique setting clearly inspired dudes to bring out their A-game material. Read More »
