Isiah Thomas, NBA Draft Genius: One of the League’s biggest myths

Isiah Thomas

Amidst all the confused looks, raised eyebrows and exasperated questions being asked after the Knicks announced they’d hopped back in bed with Isiah Thomas — the majority sounding much like, “The f*** are they doing?” — my biggest query had nothing to do with potential NCAA violations, NBA conflicts of interest, or what dirty photos Isiah may or may not have on Knicks owner James Dolan:

My question: What does Isiah do so well that the Knicks need him to do this job and nobody else? Read More »

5 NBA Video Game Superstars Who Don’t Translate to Reality

Ben Gordon, NBA Live 09

Nothing hurts like getting beat in a video game when someone like Richard Jefferson goes off for 14 dunks in one game. It’s a continuous, unending slap in the face. Being at the receiving end of a Kobe Bryant 65-point game is one thing. But losing because your opponent discovers the sweet spot for some scrub three-point shooter is worse than jury duty.

In real NBA games, coaches want certain guys doing certain things and everyone has a role. In the gaming world, if you want Kwame Brown to drop 25 a game, you could probably make it happen (he actually catches passes). Read More »

NYC’s own Kenny Anderson stops at House of Hoops

Kenny Anderson

Before high school basketball became a presence on the Internet, superstars were created through news clippings, subjective rankings, and word-of-mouth. Kenny Anderson was one of those players from back in the day whose prep exploits generated tall tales of mythic proportions.

“Chibbs,” as he was known at Archbishop Molloy H.S. (Queens, N.Y.) in the late-1980s, was that dude. From the first day he laced up his sneaks as a freshman, stardom was written all over him. Read More »

The Biggest Sports Upset of 2010

Usain Bolt has been the most dominant athlete in the world over the last two years. Why? Because in a sport where the margin for error is almost non-existent — where competition plays out over the course of just 10 or 20 seconds — Usain made it so his only competition was the clock.

Until now. Tyson Gay beat Bolt over the weekend in a 100-meter final in Stockholm. Gay is widely considered the second-fastest man in the world, so on paper this shouldn’t be as much of a shock. But at the same time, Bolt hadn’t lost a race in two years and had made the gap between No. 1 and No. 2 so large that it seemed he wouldn’t lose for at least another couple of years.

Is there a realistic upset on this level in the NBA?

Smush Parker Wants Back In The NBA

Smush Parker

I guess once you’re in the NBA fraternity, you’re in it for life. (Try telling that to Stephon Marbury.) Anyways, although Smush Parker has been playing basketball in China with the Guandong Southern Tigers Hongyuan for the past two years (with two championships to show for it), the five-year NBA veteran wants back in. And according to Joseph Staszewski of the New York Post, he’s going to do what it takes to get there. Read More »
