I had friends stay with me a couple weeks ago, and they were amazed/disgusted at how many pairs of kicks I had in my apartment. Almost every year heading into the playoffs, the Dallas Mavericks are among the favorites to contend for the big prize. They come into every season stacked with experienced veterans and a deep bench of players who could start for most other teams. In recent years, we have seen them active during the trade deadline, improving their team by bringing in guys like Jason Kidd and Caron Butler.

Apparently the Celtics and Heat are in a competition to set the record for having the most players in training camp and under contract. Yesterday the Celtics extended camp invites to Mario West (Hawks), Stephane Lasme (UMass), Chris Johnson (LSU) and Jamar Smith (Southern Indiana), bringing their preliminary roster count to approximately 47. It’s gonna look like ABCD Camp the first few days before Doc Rivers starts making cuts … With every new guy Boston brings in, Luke Harangody has to be getting more nervous. The hype surrounding Reggie Bush and his Heisman Trophy scandal has swamped the media. Five years after he was the face of college football, Bush has forfeited the sport’s defining trophy amidst the revelation of NCAA violations committed during his USC career. (Good thing O.J. Mayo didn’t win any Player of the Year awards during his one-year stop at USC, otherwise that would be another source of public embarrassment for the school that seems to ignore the fact that their athletes are amateurs.) School is back in session. Earlier this week, Amar’e Stoudemire, everybody’s favorite announcer Gus Johnson, and the New York Knicks dancers were at the Dunlevy Milback Center in Harlem to welcome NYC back to school, handing out backpacks and other school supplies and speaking to kids about the importance of education. During the event we got up with Amar’e to talk about the upcoming season and life in NY.
Let’s just put all the cards on the table. On paper, Miami’s new “Big Three” looks unbeatable. They have LeBron, D-Wade and Bosh, role players that should be able to fill in around them and an X on their backs for motivation. But in reality, it’s a long road to an NBA Championship.
