Miami Hurricanes star Durand Scott puts the ACC on blast

While Miami Hurricanes football can take a huge step forward in their recent resurgence by beating #2 Ohio State this weekend, basketball at “The U” is still looking to break through. Last season Miami finished last place in the ACC with a 4-12 conference record, despite posting a 20-13 mark overall. With PF Dwayne Collins gone to the pros, it’ll be up to rising sophomore PG Durand Scott (10.3 ppg, 3.4 apg) to lead the Hurricanes in climbing out of the basement. In Dime #58, we profiled Scott in a “What’s My Name?” piece. Read More »

Ron Artest & Matt Barnes are “The Bash Brothers”

Ron Artest

With the L.A. Lakers’ offseason signing of Matt Barnes, it’s hard to argue against the idea that the two-time defending champions have formed the most agitating duo in the League: The Bash Brothers.

Depending on how old you are or what sports you follow, you might remember the nickname “Bash Brothers” from Oakland A’s sluggers Mark McGwire and Jose Canseco, or from the ’92 Disney movie Might Ducks, back when Dean Portman and Falton Reed were throwing ‘bows like they were Ludacris at a downtown club in the Dirty South. But this is the new age of enforcers, with hit men walking around in the NBA. Read More »

Nets sign No. 1 NBA Draft pick

Joe Smith

Earlier this week, the New Jersey Nets waived Sean May, who they’d just signed weeks before. The 26-year-old former Final Four M.O.P. at North Carolina broke his foot in a workout, making himself unavailable to contribute to a team that is trying to build a solid foundation to rebound from one of the worst seasons in NBA history.

Still needing depth in the frontcourt to bolster its young core of Brook Lopez and Derrick Favors, today the Nets are expected to sign Joe Smith. Read More »

We Reminisce: Vince Carter drops 50 on Philly and Allen Iverson

Contrary to mainstream belief, there has always been more to Vince Carter‘s game than dunks. From a pure talent standpoint, VC has the total package you’d want from a two-guard, which he displayed in this Eastern Conference semifinal game from 2001 when he dropped 50 points on the eventual conference champion Sixers.

Michael Beasley vs. The World

Michael Beasley

After dominating the college scene in his lone season at Kansas State — averaging 26.2 points and a nation-leading 12.4 rebounds per game — Michael Beasley had the look of a potentially unstoppable talent destined for NBA greatness. But the same can’t be said about his brief time in the pros so far.

Beasley wasn’t exactly a bust for the Miami Heat, but he wasn’t the future All-Star force the team envisioned when they took him No. 2 overall in the ’08 Draft, ahead of Russell Westbrook, Kevin Love and Brook Lopez, to name a few. Read More »

The Warriors have the next Steve Nash on their roster

Golden State Warriors

Looking back, the depth chart of the 1997-98 Phoenix Suns at the point guard spot was crazy: Jason Kidd (starting), Steve Nash (2nd-year backup) and Kevin Johnson (combo guard near the end of the road). Now, all three have All-NBA credentials and at least arguable Hall of Fame potential, and at some point in their respective careers averaged 10-plus assists per game.

At the time, KJ had already left his mark on the game. And we knew J-Kidd was something special. The biggest surprise of the group was Nash, who would go on to win two league MVPs during his second career stint with the Suns years later. Read More »

1990′s vs. 2010 NBA Comparisons

Who is the new 'Zo?

As time passes, the faces change, but the game stays the same. As a result, it’s easy to notice similarities between NBA players from different eras.

The Golden Age for me as a basketball fan was the early-1990s. Those days were filled with a lot of up-and-comers with plenty of style like Shaq, Penny and Kenny Anderson. Add to that the stars from the ’80s like Isiah, Michael and Hakeem who were able solidify their careers and win the ultimate prize within that period, and a host of other memorable characters. Kevin Durant rains on Russia; Carmelo headed to Chicago?

At least once during this World Championship tournament, Kevin Durant needed a game where he just went HAM on the comp and dropped ruthless buckets. Yesterday’s quarterfinal against Russia was that game. With “1972″ written on his sneakers — an ode to the ’72 USA Olympic squad that got famously screwed against Russia — Durant scored 33 points (11-19 FG) in another convincing win that was actually close for about a half until the U.S. broke it open and won by 10 to advance to the Final Four. Where Are They Now: Harold Miner

It’s been a minute since we’ve done a Where Are They Now? feature on the site, and this one kind of just fell into our laps. In his first interview in over a decade, Harold Miner is finally ready to talk. “I just think it’s time,” says Miner, now 39 years old. “It’s been a long time.” A two-time NBA Slam Dunk champion, Sports Illustrated’s College Basketball Player of the Year over the likes Shaquille O’Neal and Christian Laettner, you can understand why at one point in time people used to call him “Baby Jordan.” But nowadays, Harold is just fine. Jason Thompson Could Be Dealt Before The Trade Deadline

Jason Thompson

From the All-Star break through the offseason, the Sacramento Kings were out to get more depth in their frontline to complement Rookie of the Year Tyreke Evans. At the deadline, Carl Landry was brought in for his scoring, and this summer they obtained a veteran shot blocker in Samuel Dalembert. Also, two of the best bigs from this year’s Draft were picked up in DeMarcus Cousins and Hassan Whiteside. So where does this leave Jason Thompson? Read More »
